Praying for Revival

Preacher man said
Over his bottle of gin
Sometimes in the early
Morning light
His collar’s too tight

Preacher man said
You can never win
With sin
No matter how hard you fight
It comes around again

Preacher man said
I made my bed
My bottle’s run dry
I’m in over my head
Not gonna lie

Preacher man said
I’m praying for revival
I need to borrow a tent
It’s for my survival
I might just have to lie though

For Naught

Whisper in the window
Shadow in the hall
Sometimes I think I feel you
But you’re not really
Here at all

Laughter on the wind
Face in the crowd
So many things remind me
But the silence can be
So loud

Remembering you here
Remembering you’re not
Pulling petals off of roses
And wishing upon stars
All for naught

The prompt is “whisper in the window” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 10, National Poetry Month 2022.

Kissing Girls is Like

Kissing girls is like
Cottony clouds on a warm spring day
Cool beach sand sliding between toes
A smooth river stone against a caressing palm
A soothing cup of hot tea to a parched soul

Kissing girls is like
Staring into an endless blue
Offering mostly answers
But a few questions too

The prompt is “kissing girls is like” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 9, National Poetry Month 2022.

Obsolete

Hotel air conditioners are the worst
Always on the fritz
Give it a little kick
That might do the trick
Maybe it’s just the economy rooms
The ones that I can afford
Life of a salesman
Death of a salesman
Do you want to buy an encyclopedia?

The prompt is “air conditioners are the worst” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 8, National Poetry Month 2022.

History and Religion

Sippin’ whisky
Whistlin’ Dixie
Burnin’ crosses and bridges
On the way to church Sunday mornin’

The prompt is “sippin’ whisky” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 7, National Poetry Month 2022.

America’s Pastime

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here
Today
to plaay ball!

American Anthem, hat in hand-
Bleary eyes and bottle for a microphone-
Small town karaoke version of patriotism vomited in the evening air

With beer- and bated breath they waited
for the first pitch-

Foul ball and foul attitude washed down with a ballpark frank covered in mustard

Sweaty hands sail dreams in paper airplanes toward home plate-

Hometown heroes get the 21 gun salute.

The prompt is “dearly beloved we are gathered here today” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 6, National Poetry Month 2022.

A Shark is a Shark is a Dolphin

“Shark!” Shouts the pale, floppy tourist as he stumbles to the shore,
Followed quickly by several more –
Panicking, clamoring, seeking solace sands,
Clearly from a landlocked state with no knowledge of the sea –
The lifeguard tries to calm the crowd
but to no avail –
“It’s a dolphin,” he sighs amid the exodus,
Drops his hands and stands aside
to watch them flail

The prompt is “the exodus” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 5, National Poetry Month 2022.
