The end of the year was weird this past school year. I ended up giving this Teacher Report Card survey in March because I was on maternity leave from Spring Break until the end of the year. Now I have a baby daughter and can’t actually imagine going back to school, but also can’t wait to go back to school. It’s been the longest and shortest summer ever. So this survey doesn’t really have the same oomph as in previous years, and only 36 of my students actually did it (probably didn’t help that they were doing a Desmos art project at the time I posted it). I’m posting the results nonetheless.

I’ve been using the same base of a survey for years. Here are my previous results: 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023. I’ve slowly been adding and taking away certain questions. I’m striving to get feedback that I can actually use and that I care about. Here’s the survey I used this year (It will force you to make a copy):

I would say that I have failed or almost failed every math class I’ve taken and this is the first class I’ve done genuinely well on. I’ve never had to stress in the class because she doesn’t throw new topics suddenly at you and you feel prepared for class.
• Oh! You got lucky. She explains the math really well. Make sure to ask questions if you are confused because she explains and shows it better then videos on YouTube.

• i would say that its a pretty really easy class becasue it not hardworking and she answers all of your questions
• Use the study guide and you’ll pass all of the tests.
• It’s pretty easy, There’s a lot of topics but they’re manageable
• I would say just take notes when you can and ask questions if you have any.

• I really liked how Mrs. Grayson ran the class this year there’s not much I’d change. I’d say don’t be afraid to be a little more assertive when students aren’t paying attention.

• I feel like more use of the whiteboards, like using them to follow along with you for the first problem of a unit would be helpful because we can make a lot of mistakes and learn from them so when we write them down its less messy. If that makes sense.

• When taking notes she should check if not all but majority are done copying everything done
• I think just making sure to explain the process step by step and havign students write it down for when they’re doing practice on their own.

• Provide more examples when teaching a topic because sometimes I would only have one or two to go off of and I would have to try to reverse through it and struggle.

• Making people solve answers in front of the class, it’s very uncomfortable for students and can be embarrassing

Having certain packets for those activities so everything has a purpose and you don’t just have a whole bunch of random papers. EX: homework packet, warm up packet, notes packet per unit.

If you even need anything, Mrs. Grayson is very calm and understanding and she will gladly do anything to help her.

I’ve now taught for (over) a full quarter at my new school. Some days, I feel like the last 8 years of teaching have just left my brain and I’m a totally new teacher. I never imagined being a new veteran teacher would be so difficult. Maybe it’s the crazy pandemic year we’re all dealing with but change is especially hard to handle for me right now. It probably also has to do with how I’m older, have more responsibilities, and have so many other changes to deal with at the same time. It’s not that I disagree or don’t want to do the changes. It’s more just that I haven’t figured out yet how to make it feel like me yet.

Things I miss from my previous teaching experiences:

• Having my own classroom
  • Math play table
  • Having a classroom phone with privacy to call parents
  • Having an organized file system
  • Having an organized teacher desk
  • Actually knowing all the things I have in my room and can actually use, and where they are located
  • Not having to battle passing period traffic with my cart
  • Having my opening screen ready to go before any learners arrive
  • Having a class set of calculators (and with them a place to attach my Plickers)
• Promethean board, mainly for lesson organization
• Google Classroom (Canvas might be the first tech tool I hate using)
  • Friday Free Writes and Weekly Summaries
• High fiving students (COVID 😢)
• Hallway math problems
• Not getting up at 5am every day
• Delta Math
• A copy secretary that was easy to access
• Being a club sponsor
• Being the leader of my curriculum groups
• Feeling like I knew what I was doing
• Seeing my learners every day (now I’m on an A/B block with a C day that has all periods on Wednesdays)
• Having empty desks in classrooms
• Candy and extra credit as prizes
• Having a MacBook Pro for my school laptop (I really really miss Airdrop)
• Not feeling like I’m behind every day

But I want to end on a positive so here are some things that are great at my new school (this doesn’t mean they haven’t also been at previous schools):

• My coworkers are amazing and will answer every question I have without making me feel bad ever
• My coworkers have amazing ideas and push me to be a better teacher
• My coworkers have used a lot of my ideas and value my opinion
• My learners have a lot of freedoms in the school (off campus, open campus privileges) and they mostly don’t abuse the system
• The school has been giving no grades to homework for a while, but learners still have the expectation to do homework and they generally do it.
• The school has office hours during the day and learners use it.
• The school has a Testing Center! Saves so much stress and time.
• One to one Chromebooks means I can do so much more with tech, especially Desmos
• Block periods allow for more fun
• My school has a focus on SEL and all the staff really care about our learners’ well-being
• We have weekly 90-min PLC meetings that are so well structured and really improve learning
• The math hallway has lounge seating and fishbowls and counters with outlets. You can have groups out in the hallway working.
• Families respond to emails and have working emails
• Learners respond to emails
• I use my iPad with AirServer screen mirroring so I can be anywhere in my room and writing on the board. And learners think it’s very cool to be writing on my iPad
• I have a wall that’s painted in white board paint, another wall of white boards, and lots of big mobile white boards to fill in the other walls. And pretty much an unlimited supply of markers.

I’m hoping next quarter will be easier for my sanity. Now that marching band is over I’ll have a lot more time, too. I have a lot of goals I want to accomplish before the end of the semester. Here’s to a better nine weeks!
