Writer's Block: Cute Meet

Behind every great couple, there's often a great story. What's the best (nonfiction) how-we-met story you've heard?

my mamaw and granddad met at the fourth of july carnival in small city they lived near. she had gone with 3 of her friends and he had gone with 3 of his friends and there was some ride that one or two of the girls wouldn't ride so some of the boys rode with the other girls and so on. They married that november and remained so until his death in 1996.

i met james when he installed the cable in my first off-campus college apartment with my 3 friends. he left us his phone number (as they were supposed to) and said if i wanted to get coffee or something sometime i should call him. i liked it - no pressure, the option was entirely mine (even if i hadn't called him i certainly wouldn't have complained about the way it was handled.) two of my roommates (who were an item) and i met him a few days later for coffee&dessert, then we all went to the movies, then the two of us went to Denny's (though i agreed to call my roommate in an hr to assure her i was fine). we saw each other every night that week. now we're engaged.
:)

also i heard today was

 national "military spouses day"

for the spouses of the military people.

the 24th or 25th annual one in fact...funny i'd never heard of it before, lol

facebook photos vs. lj scrapbook

i wish lj had drag&drop picture organizing in the scrapbook feature.

also the upload program fb uses where you see your pictures and select the ones you want is nice too.

but i like lj's customization ability.

need party games!!

it is going to be a pirate themed party.
so games with a pirate theme are better!
(remember appropriate for 5-6yr olds, lol)

so far:
- stick the treasure chest to the map (ie pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey)
- possibly a craft (oriental trading has a couple of crafts - and some great pirate decorations and stuff)
- musical chairs
- "pirate" says (like simon says - will probably involve simon wearing a fake pirate hat)
- limbo
- tie balloons around ankles, and pop everyone else's balloon (what kind of pirate thing could the balloon's be?)
- possibly the drop/toss the clothespin in the milk jug game....ooh pirate coins in the milk jug game?

(if we have enough people and/or room:
fruit salad
red light, green light
mother may I
telephone)

we can't have confetti (i wasn't going to anyway), and "Decorations may not be hung or taped to walls or ceiling". maybe i'll take my jack sparrow cut out for decoration, lol.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - A Connecticut judge has given the brush-off to a blonde woman's lawsuit claiming L'Oreal Inc. ruined her social life when she accidentally dyed her hair brunette with one of its products.

Charlotte Feeney of Stratford says she can never return to her natural blonde hue, a shock that left her so traumatized she needed anti-depressants.

She says she suffered headaches and anxiety, missed the attention that blondes receive and had to stay home and wear hats most of the time.

A Superior Court judge dismissed Feeney's 2005 lawsuit Monday, saying she never proved her allegation that L'Oreal put brown hair dye in a box labeled as blonde. The company also had disputed the claim.

Feeney's attorney, David Laudano, declined to comment and she could not be reached after the judge's decision.

movies!!!!

made a surprise appearance in Hollywood Wednesday at the "Walt Disney Showcase," a preview of the studio's next several years of movies. As the crowd roared, it was announced that Depp would play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," Tonto in Jerry Bruckheimer's "Lone Ranger" and one additional role.

On Thursday morning (September 25), that role was announced by Depp's reps, confirming the dreams of millions who spent the night sleeping on Orlando Bloom bedsheets: Captain Jack Sparrow will return to fight another day.

...

it is largely believed that it will be a solo journey, as "Pirates" co-stars Bloom and Keira Knightley have insisted they're finished with the franchise. Last year's "At World's End" concluded with Sparrow setting sail for the Fountain of Youth, likely hinting at the adventure soon to come.

But before audiences see Depp back in his ratty pirate clothes and beaded beard, they can look forward to having a tea party with him in 2010. Stepping into the iconic role of the Mad Hatter, Depp joins previously announced 18-year-old newcomer Mia Wasikowska, who has been chosen to play Alice. The 3-D "Alice in Wonderland" will reunite one of the most successful director-actor duos of the last few decades for the seventh time; Depp has previously collaborated with Burton on everything from "Edward Scissorhands" to "Sweeney Todd."

...

Most likely sometime between those two films, Depp will hit the screen opposite an unnamed kemo sabe for a 21st century re-imagining of "The Lone Ranger," as previously announced by super-producer Bruckheimer. For a brief period of time, some news outlets believed that Depp would be playing the heroic cowboy — but this morning, the actor's reps insisted that he'd been cast as the Ranger's long-suffering, fiercely loyal Native American sidekick, Tonto. Depp, who has said in interviews that he has some Cherokee and Navajo in his blood, previously portrayed an American Indian in the 1997 film "The Brave."

dog attack article

SAN FRANCISCO - A woman whose dogs viciously attacked and killed her neighbor in the hallway of their apartment building seven years ago was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in prison.

Marjorie Knoller was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2001 mauling death of Dianne Whipple, but a judge later reduced the charge to involuntary manslaughter and sentenced her in 2002 to a four-year prison term.

But the California Supreme Court last year said the trial judge was wrong and sent the case back. Last month, Superior Court Judge Charlotte Woolard reinstated the murder conviction, for which Knoller was sentenced Monday.

The case is the California's first murder conviction connected to a dog mauling, prosecutors say.

The case turned into a tabloid sensation because of the viciousness of the attack — the dogs tore all of Whipple's clothing from her body and left her with more than 70 bites — and the seemingly cavalier attitudes of Knoller and her law partner and husband, Robert Noel, who blamed Whipple for the attack.

The couple also said they were keeping the canines on behalf of a white supremacist accused of running an attack dog ring from his state prison cell. The couple eventually adopted the prisoner, Paul "Cornfed" Schneider, as their son.

Knoller, who has served three years in prison, will have to serve 12 more years before she can apply for parole.

In denying Knoller's plea for probation, Woolard noted that Knoller didn't call 911 or otherwise try to help Whipple during the 10-minute attack. The judge said Knoller knew the dogs were dangerous, ignored numerous warnings to train them and hasn't expressed remorse for the attack.

"She has blamed the victim and has held her dogs in higher regard than humans," Woolard said.

Whipple's partner, Sharon Smith, addressed Knoller before she was led off to jail. Smith called Knoller's relationship with the two dogs and the prisoner "perverted" and expressed satisfaction with the lengthy prison sentence.

"It is very hard to find forgiveness for someone who doesn't accept responsibility," Smith said.
