As the crow (or condor) flies, 15,588 kilometers (9,686 miles) lies from the northern tip of Alaska to the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego. Over the past several decades, I have traveled much of this – by land, sea, air … on horseback and on foot; in boats, buses and trains; and, yes, even hitchhiking.
