Well by all accounts Tuesday 7 April we were very close to all out war with a nuclear attack by the USA on Iran, to save Israel. Trump made it very clear, he was going to wipe out an entire civilization some 5000 years of history and 95 million people. I do not see the American political system working as intended, maybe the 18th century model should be modernized. I know a lot of people were worried and talked about it. The price of gas is very high and my barber was telling me how much it cost for a full tank it is 100% higher in cost. I wonder what the effect will be on tourism this Summer.

Finished reading the book on becoming Green Gables or the story of how the national park at Green Gables was created following the publishing sensation of the book Anne of Green Gables in 1908. The end is sad in a way, Myrtle McNeill-Webb and her husband Ernest had sold the farm in 1936 to the Government of Canada but they thought the word of Gov Officials was sufficient to guarantee their staying at the farm until they died. Not so, they discovered too late, by 1945 the end of the war ended and lots of young men returning needed jobs, Myrtle and Ernest were of retirement age and were told to pack their things one week before Christmas 1945. The House itself would remain empty until 1948 when it was transformed into Green Gables of the book you read today. They had to give their 2 dogs away, and the furniture. They moved to Charlottetown to live with their children. Ernest died in 1950 but Myrtle lived until 1979 in the manse of the baptist Church in Cavendish. They never set foot back into the house and were shocked to see how the government erase any mentions of them owning the house or the farm before it became the Green Gables tourist site. This is true because prior to my reading this book I had never heard of them and always wondered how all this had come about. The Baptist Church is still on Cavendish road but the manse is gone. No wonder many tourists ask me how author Lucy Maud Montgomery came to choose this particular house. I have to make a link between Myrtle McNeill and her cousin Lucy Maud. They are all buried in the Cavendish Cemetery in the first row by the road.

I am now looking at Cavendish in a different way. From a farming community, it became a national park and part amusement park, in some parts a crass commercial project. Originally as of 1936, the McNeill-Webb farm saw the building of a golf course on the farmland with a restaurant and club house which would move into the house. It is only after 1948 that slowly a project was formed to make it into the house of the characters Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of the book Anne of Green Gables. This was due to public demand on seeing the house as described in the story. In the 1970’s the barn which had burned down in 1932 was rebuilt and modified, modernized in 2020 with a new $10 million dollar visitor centre and gift shop, large parking for buses. After the storm Fiona in 2023, the park service had to remove many old trees and plant new saplings. Many of the trees of the time of author Lucy Maud Montgomery have been cut down in 1936 for the golf course. So what you see today is a fantasy place modelled to fit the book. Now I understand what my uncle said to me two years ago on his visit to PEI that the Cavendish site did not look at all like what he saw in 1960.

Mispronunciations

More and more I find that if you listen to anything on the news or the internet, speakers will mispronounce any name of country or city they are unfamiliar with or have heard but are not bothered getting the pronunciation right. Currently with the war in the Gulf and Middle East there are loads of mispronunciations.

The one that annoys me the most is Qatar, on CNN they call it CUTTER. Where did this come from? The correct way to say it is KA -TAR. I believe that this probably started with the military with their singular way of calling things the way they think it is called. On American news, the news items follow US army around the world and this includes the weather for places like Quetta a city in the province of Baluchistan, in Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan. I never understood why suburban housewives in Arkansas would care for the weather in that part of the world. When you cannot get the weather in Canada on any US news network.

Since Israel and the USA started the un-winnable war with Iran, I have heard some truly funny, maybe sad, news casts where IRAN which is ancient Persia called IRAQ. Not the same country, one is an ancient empire with 5000 years of history and a country 3 times the size of its neighbour. Iran has a population of 97 million people, highly educated and professional. On the other hand Iraq is a British creation of 1920 and was a mandate of Britain until 1932. Population is Arab and Kurdish, with a population of 46 million. It was part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire and called Mesopotamia until 1919. Iranians are not Arabs, they are ethnically a Caucasians, descending from Indo-European (Aryan) tribes. Iran also has important other ethnic groups like Turkmen, Azeri, Balouch, Lurs, Kurds, Tajiks.

Same goes for the Supreme Leader, the first one who gained power in 1979 was Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who died in 1989. His successor was Ali Khamenei who recently died. for some reason the two names are confused as if it is one and the same person. Khomeini would be 124 years old today. I think that this happens because of the sloppiness and laziness of the media. But given how serious the situation is now, you would think that the media would make the effort to get their facts straight.

Tonight I heard Professor Robert Pape of the University of Chicago, who described this conflict as the New Vietnam. He explained that it is clear now the USA with Israel are alone in this war. The other nations in NATO are not interested and President Alexander Stubb of Finland made that clear today on behalf of NATO. Who could help the USA and Israel, Prof. Pape suggested the 13 other Gulf nations who all bought sophisticated weapons from the USA for years. This is their war in their region. However one has to know history, to remember that Iran ruled over the Arabs for many centuries. They all have a long history with each other, the USA and Israel are new comers to this little party. Pape said New Vietnam, why? Well the USA got involved in Vietnam in 1960 but by 1967-68 and the Tet Offensive, President Johnson realized this Vietnam adventure was unwinnable, he also became so unpopular that he could not run for a second term. It was left to Nixon to conclude this war that the USA lost in 1975. Though today in popular American culture, Hollywood presents it as a possible win in the end with lots of heroes.

With Iran, the current government is very well organized after 47 years and is no push over. They will fight to the death and resistance is a victory by itself. This is the way the Vietcong saw it and ultimately exhausted the US army. Tonight the latest response given by interviews by Iranian Officials in a calm, serious and resolute manner shows their determination. Trump may think that he could now send troops but that would turn into a massacre of US soldiers. Iraq was different and bad with various factions fighting each other within the country in an effort to succeed Saddam Hussein. Not so in Iran, the Iranians are a very proud people and they may hate the Mullahs regime they have now, they would prefer change it themselves and not have the USA come and dictate to them. The USA was involved in August 1953 in the coup to overthrow the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh, because he was going to nationalize British oil companies, the coup was a terrible mistake.

The other point Prof. Pape made was about the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians know that the USA needs the oil to pass through and are desperate, this Iran will exploit to their advantage. Rising oil prices, fuel inflation, affect stocks and bonds, food prices, it creates uncertainty. Trump cannot afford high inflation and high gas prices and volatility on the stock market. So Iran is winning though the western media does not want to present it that way. Israel is also loosing and is becoming the pariah state, waging war on Lebanon and Syria, both have important Christian populations who have been attacked.

Now the most grave danger is the potential use of nuclear weapons. We know that the USA, Russia, China, France and England as the 5 permanent members of the security council have such weapons and are unlikely to use them, they are a deterrent not a weapon. However there are 4 other countries who also have the bomb, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel. The problem is Israel and a very serious one at that. Israel is governed by a Zionist right wing government under Netanyahu who clings to power so he does not have to go to prison for numerous misdeeds. Israel is also involved in bombing Lebanon and Syria on top of its war with Iran. If the threat of Iran becomes too great and if Hezbollah (party of God) continues to shell Israel with hundred of rockets, the government of Netanyahu may feel they have no choice. and use its nuclear weapons against Iran. Given the fanaticism of the Israeli government and the treatment netted out to Palestinian in Gaza and in Palestine proper with 75,000 dead, a figure the Israeli Army now accept as accurate, we will have an uncontrollable situation. Trump will not be able to control Israel. It’s time for the American public to wake up, the President is endangering every one with his ignorance and incompetence. The mid-term election will solve nothing. US Congress needs to repudiate Israel and apologize for its misdeeds. This will not happen politically, no politician is brave enough to change US foreign policy.

Gaza and the West Bank is in fact the State of Palestine.

Price of Gas

PEI is a small Island of 1200 sq miles and a small population of 180,000. However when you hear people speak of a problem it is as if we on the Island are the only ones suffering’s so unfair so unjust and greedy people manipulate us and we love re-electing them and not ever changing a thing. There is only one price for commodities like oil, gas, diesel on PEI and it is managed by a Government body called IRAC the regulatory agency on prices. In this case IRAC can only follow world prices and see how to best manage it for us. So the price of gas went up from $1.42 to $1.62 in 48 hours, same for diesel and oil furnace which saw a major increase of 0.25 cents a litre. The howling is not the wind but people driving around their big F250 trucks and now claim they cannot afford the truck or the gas. They of course blame the politicians as if our local elected officials have the power to reduce prices. This is the usual crowd of couch complainers who would not lift a finger to take a more pragmatic approach because it is a me first mentality.

Well I started writing this post a few days ago and here we are Sunday 8 March, gas price now is $1.72, more to come. A very mild weather day today and the snow is melting very fast meaning that there is water everywhere and Charlottetown has very poor drainage, we are built on open swamp land and ponds, so the streets are flooded and driving is a mess. We are now on daylight saving time and Canada has two systems, some of our Provinces are on daylight saving time and other are not and switched permanently to one system, daylight, and they simply do not change it. It appears that more and more Canadians would like one system the daylight one which gives more daylight hours.

I now that some of you have stopped listening to the news, at the moment the news is frightening, it goes far beyond bad, it is catastrophic. Do not take my word for it, there is a concurrence of opinions by commentators. The situation with Iran and the war now in day 9, is amounting to terrible war crimes against the civilian population of Iran, with the setting on fire of the giant oil stocking depot in Tehran. The oil burns and has spilled into the sewer system igniting fires in various neighbourhoods. The sky is permanently black with soot and smoke and no one knows the permanent effect on people’s health. Ordinary people should not have to go through such horrors. I do have friends in all those places, I phoned them and keep in touch, I cannot do much, but at least let them know I think of them.

Today Trump has told off the PM of UK, Keith Starmer, the relationship with the UK is at a very fraught level and Trump told him that he does not need Britain, he has won the war with Iran and he is vowing retribution on the UK. Trump and megalomania, senile and angry, I believe he is as a person, more dangerous than any other regime. In the end we will all pay for this, one way or another.

In the meantime to distract myself I have been focusing on my notes on the various points of interest for my tours on the Island. I have uncovered a lot of info which makes a visit here more interesting and helps understand what makes the place tick. There is a lot of things to know about PEI on many topics, much of it I had never heard of. Just hoping to make the various tours I give more enjoyable for visitors.

Heat is back

So after a week of no heat, the computer problem which caused so many failures has apparently been fixed. What I find unacceptable is that her building is considered a luxury building with high rents. The new company who bought our building is cutting services and maintenance chasing higher profit. This delay of one week to repair the heating system is not a good sign of a responsible owner.

Next week it appears that the weather will warm up and this should help.

Now Prez Trump has started WWIII by inventing the lie that Iran has nuclear weapons or is developing nuclear weapons. This is the same argument a previous republican president and the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair used that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction as an argument to bombing and invading Iraq. The USA then wanted regime change and get rid of Saddam Hussein a former American ally. There was no weapons of mass destruction and this was demonstrated like there is no nuclear weapons program in Iran today. But the masses bought the argument then and are buying the argument now. The war is being waged because the PM of Israel B. Netanyahu wants to expands his country dominance. He is very good at manipulating Trump. However Trump and his gang have not considered the fact that Iran supplies 40% of the Oil to China and the Chinese government is angry at the turn of events. This may play against the USA in the long term.

This American adventure has now dragged Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Dubai, the UAE, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq into this war. Europeans like France and the UK have also become involved. Prez Trump has said that much worse is coming, I am very afraid that his might mean the use of an Atomic weapon. This is the devil that must not be unleashed under any conditions.

This war has no strategy or end game, many innocent civilians will die to satisfy the egos of men like Trump and Netanyahu. Still the Congress and Senate is doing nothing, trying to evade responsibility as if the mid-term elections is a solution, it is not! Cultural treasures in Iran are also being indiscriminately bombed, today the Golestan Palace, a UNESCO heritage site was targeted and damaged by Israeli and American bombs. Golestan Palace was the residence of the Qajar dynasty’s kings and built by them around 1800.

Photo of the rooms before the damage of the bombs today

The final obscenity March 02, Melania Trump, presided over Monday’s meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York City about education’s role in “advancing tolerance and world peace,” as the USA and Israel military continue to bomb Iran.

It is now day 7 with no heat in our building, it is ok in terms of comfort but the company responsible for this has been very slow in fixing the problem. Monday March 2 they are suppose to try to fix it.

This week marks the fourth Anniversary of the war in Ukraine. Russia is bogged down, which goes to prove that they are not the big military power they claim. The losses in lives is catastrophic both civilians more so on the Russian side. The Ukrainians are very brave and courageous and deserve our full support. Though with the war now with Iran, the conflict in Ukraine has been pushed off the front page as is the Epstein saga.

Something strange happened yesterday, I went to the Post Office to mail a small gift to my brother. The Post employee said to me that I had to go on ZONOSprepay which is a new service of the US government since 24 February, before they could take my package and process it in the mail. Apparently this new APP is to allow me to pay to the USA Gov. any duty ahead of time, there is a new 10% tariff imposed by Mr Trump by Executive Order after the Supreme Court ruled against him on tariffs in general. This is what his team came up with, to go around the Supreme Court decision. It turns out there was no duty to pay because the gift was under $100. USD. Once I printed the form of the USA gov and presented it to the Canadian Post Office with the code given to me, my package could be mailed. In the past any duty was collected by the Canadian Post Office and handed over to US Post. Just another measure to piss Canadians off. Poll after poll in Canada shows that 80% plus Canadians dislike (hate) Trump.

We are now in March and we will be jumping one hour ahead, daylight saving time, on Sunday 8 March, to me this means Winter is basically over. It has been a long winter, it started early this year and I’m done.

I am sharing here an engraving of Quebec City in 1759. The City was besieged by British Navy and Army, the final battle will be in September 1759 on the Plains of Abraham (farmer Abraham Martin) today a large battlefield park within the City and just outside the walls. The devastation of that war all along the St-Laurent River will create a climate of famine and poverty which will take 2 generations to recover from for the population. British troops of General James Wolfe (34 yrs old) practice a burnt ground tactic and everything was destroyed within 100Km, population massacred, farms and livestock burnt and shot. The battle on the Plains only lasted 15 minutes and both Wolfe and Montcalm were injured and died shortly thereafter. Wolfe’s body was taken back to England in a barrel full of rum and Montcalm died at a house at no. 59 Rue St-Louis inside the walls. Today this stone building is apartments for soldiers of the Canadian Army. His body would later be buried at the Convent of the Ursulines Nuns just further down the street, though nothing remains today of his body except for his skull.

Place Royale in Lower Town Quebec City, the bombed out homes and church have all been rebuilt since 1759 and the church is the famous Notre-Dame Des Victoires built in celebration of a victory against a previous British attacks in 1687. You can see some British soldiers walking. The area today is a major tourist attraction.

Here is another view this one of the Cote de La Montagne going up towards haute ville of Quebec. The buildings of the area have all been rebuilt in the years since. The street dates back to the founding of Quebec City in 1608. At the top in 1797 a City Gate was built named after Colonel Robert Prescott, Governor General of the Canadas, residing in the Capital of Quebec. He was a man with a peppery temper (irascible).

Every democratic implosion under Trump is a fantasy future until it becomes a tragic past

“I have the impression that the persons directing the policy of the Hitler Government are not normal. Many of us, indeed, have a feeling that we are living in a country where fantastic hooligans and eccentrics have got the upper hand.” —Sir Horace Rumbold to London, 1933

It took six years from Hitler’s ascension to power at the beginning of 1933 to Kristallnacht. Those first years saw the vilification of minorities, censorship, the building of deportation camps, the mass expulsion of foreigners, and the need for Jews to show their papers on demand. Most Jews, left-wing activists, and other so-called undesirables stayed put: Germany had been their home for generations. They had friends and neighbours. They thought the unpleasantness would pass. In the end, the question wasn’t whether to go, but to where they might escape.

Today in America, the vilification of minorities is rampant from the Oval Office on down. Citizens are kidnapped, disappeared, and even murdered in the street by masked agents of the state. Detainees are held in subhuman conditions; over a thousand have vanished from the online databanks of a single deportation centre. Constitutional and civil rights protections are violated and institutional oversight is gutted. Brown Americans need to carry their citizenship papers to avoid arrest and detention; legal immigrants with proper papers are deported. The administration extorts media, corporations, universities, and law firms. The legislative branch is neutered. The Supreme Court permits race-based immigration stops. The Vice President endorses unconstitutional door-to-door searches. And the President, who tried to overturn a previous election, has questioned the upcoming midterm elections, pardoned his supporters, including the most violent, and directed the FBI and Justice Department to target his political enemies: The American government is functionally lawless.

Simultaneously, ICE, the immigration and customs enforcement agency, has seemingly been transformed into a national police force designed to project Trump’s personal power. It has a bigger budget than the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Marshalls combined; larger, in fact, than all but 15 of the world’s militaries. It will soon have more detention capacity than the entire U.S. federal prison system. And the Department of Homeland Security has enlarged its workforce by 120 per cent, with a recruitment drive featuring neo-Nazi themed slogans and videos.

In short, the regime has created what Nazi-era Jewish labour lawyer Ernst Fraenkel called “the dual state.” As former constitutional litigator David French explained in The New York Times, when discussing the ICE killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti: “The Nazis didn’t create their totalitarian state immediately. Instead, they were able to lull much of the population to sleep just by keeping their lives relatively normal … But if you crossed the government, then you passed into a different state entirely, where you would feel the full weight of fascist power — regardless of the rule of law.”

Many will call references to Germany in the Thirties indecent and alarmist. Still, if you told people a year ago that Donald Trump would oversee any of the above, they would have said you were out of your mind. (Much less that he would bomb Iran, Nigeria, and Venezuela and threaten war against the European Union over Greenland.) Trump may not be Hitler, but do Stephen Miller or the other Nazi cosplayers in Trump’s orbit sound much different? Imagine this clearly fascistregime with another three years — or more — of unaccountable power.

At what point is it no longer irresponsible to imagine worst-case scenarios involving America? At what point is it simply realistic to consider the unthinkable? Not because it will happen, but because there are legitimate fears that it might. American friends of mine in Massachusetts are considering selling their home and moving to Montreal as they imagine a collapsed real estate market in a MAGA militarized north-east. Some might say they’re panicking. But every democratic implosion is a fantasy future until it becomes a tragic past.

While it may seem fanciful, for example, it would be wise to assess how many American refugees we can take should the United States devolve into a full-fledged tyranny with ever-expanding, unaccountable deportation centres. We took 50,000 draft dodgers during the Vietnam War. But millions could flee north in an Insurrection Act-inspired horror show in blue states. As a second order concern, how should we respond if Trump accuses us of harbouring radical anti-American domestic terrorists?

Worst of all, there doesn’t appear to be an off ramp. There is no chance the U.S. Senate will ever convict Trump in an impeachment trial: That would require 67 votes; Trump’s insurrection trial only managed 57. Likewise, there is no chance Trump will ever be removed for incapacity under the 25th amendment: That requires a majority of the cabinet and the vice president, and if Trump resists, a full two thirds vote by both the House and Senate.

Some put their faith in November’s midterm elections. But nothing prevents Trump’s DHS from flooding Democratic strongholds with ICE thugs to suppress the vote. Trump has said he should have seized the voting machines in 2020. He has the power to invoke the Insurrection Act and mobilize the military to suppress public protests. And, looking ahead to 2028, Vice President J.D. Vance has said that, unlike his predecessor, he’d have manipulated the 2020 Electoral College to overturn the election and elect Trump.

An erratic tyranny to our south is a national-security nightmare. Trump’s “Donroe Doctrine” asserts American control over the entire Western hemisphere. We need to ask ourselves if Canada is to the United States what Ukraine is to Russia’s “near abroad” or Poland was to Germany’s “breathing space.” This is critical as the American rationale for taking Greenland (to keep Russia and China out of the Arctic) directly applies to the Canadian north.

Would the American military refuse illegal orders from its Commander-in-Chief to seize the infrastructure of our Arctic monitoring stations or mining centres like Fort McMurray? One would have said yes, until this fall’s war crimes in the Caribbean when the U.S. military blew up a series of small boats and killed survivors; or when it bombed Iran, Nigeria, and Venezuela without congressional approval; or when it removed the latter’s president to take the country’s oil. And it would be foolhardy to ignore Trump’s purge of senior military leadership and its replacement by regime loyalists.

Our own military is taking the threat seriously: It has war gamed a U.S. invasion of Canada not because it is likely, but because it is no longer beyond the realm of possibility. Our military planners believe the U.S. would defeat us within two days in a sudden decapitation strike, such as Putin attempted in Ukraine. They believe we would need to respond to occupation with drones and guerrilla warfare. Does this require a reassessment of the government’s policy on gun ownership?

One step we could take is to join with the Northern and Baltic states (NB8). The goal would be to extend mutual protection across the Arctic Circle from the Baltic Sea to our border with Alaska. Currently, the NB8 is designed to counter threats from Russia and China, but given America’s designs on Greenland (on hold, but for how long?), it is surely a third adversary.

We have other security concerns: Trump has repeatedly called for Canada to become the 51st state; he has posted three maps showing the U.S. owning our country. Alberta separatists are welcomed at Mar-a-Lago and by under-secretary level officials at the White House. In Davos, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly supported Alberta separating from Canada and joining the United States. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum tweeted a map of a “New Interior” which shows Canada, Mexico, and Greenland subsumed by America.

This is far removed from any acceptable international behaviour. It is a form of hybrid warfare. Do we continue to buy military aircraft from an openly hostile nation that mocks and threatens our existence? If we purchase equipment from Europe instead, how should we respond to the inevitable retaliation?

How do we counter the waves of MAGA disinformation as we face possible independence referendums in Alberta and Quebec? Should we regulate and block content on U.S.-owned social media sites? What would be the unintended consequences on our own speech if we could? What retaliation might we face from the Trump administration and its Silicon Valley allies?

And how do we combat a financial campaign to destroy us? Writing in The Globe and Mail, Thomas Homer-Dixon and Adam Gordon posit an Alberta referendum awash in MAGA money that sees separatists losing, but with 30 per cent of the vote. Trump calls the “fake” result “rigged” and claims the separatists won. They ask the him for help to “stop the steal” and he sends troops to the border and demands that we let Alberta become the “51st state.”

Then there are the economic-security threats we face, starting with unpredictable tariffs and a renegotiation of trade agreements with a partner whose word means nothing. In his excellent Davos speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined what middle powers like Canada must do to reduce the leverage of “the hegemon.” But this is a long-term fix confronting an immediate problem.

We also need to address the long-term consequences of de-dollarization. BRICSnations have tried for years to oust the dollar as the world’s global reserve currency. They have failed because of America’s size and stability. But Fabio Panetta, Governor of the Bank of Italy and a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, is raising the issue in the EU, thanks to the domestic and geopolitical instability created by Trump’s rogue regime. How can we mitigate the effects of this global shift given our economic integration with America?

These are only some of the questions we face as the Unites States continues to transform from a pluralist democracy into a blood and soil dystopia. We shouldn’t panic. But we should definitely prepare for the possibility that the worst will arrive.

This week has been busy with appointments, with the dentist and today with the optometrist, I am very happy with the new frames I chose. Will came with me to chose the final eyeglass frame, I had chosen 6 frames and the sales clerk showed me 3 more, so I tried it all and asked Will what he thought. The reason for this is based on what a friend of ours said many years ago. If you make such a decision bring with you your significant other since this person has to look at you each day. We whittled it down and I am happy with my choice, I should get the new frame in 2 weeks. My prescription has changed somewhat, nothing dramatic. This Saturday I have the first lunch with my fellow tour guides to meet and chat. The Cruise ship Season opens on 29 April with Holland America who come to Charlottetown throughout the Season often 3 times a week.

This weekend in Calgary, the Conservative Party is holding a political convention and will have a vote on the leadership of Pierre Poilievre, a controversial and highly unpopular politician in Canada. Last year he lost his seat in Ottawa after 20 years in Parliament to a Liberal Party candidate who was running for the first time. In all the years in Parliament, Poilievre managed to do nothing at all, never introduced a bill, never did anything for his constituents. During the Election he managed to fritter away a 20 point lead, the media saw him as the next Prime Minister but surprise Dr Mark Carney got elected instead. Poilievre was able to arrange to run in Alberta again and won back a seat in the House. Currently PM Carney has a 60% popularity and climbing while Poilievre or PP has he is call has 24% and dropping. People holding him in Office is what is called in Canada the MAGA Maple crowd.

Alberta might have a referendum on separation from Canada this year. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been saying that the USA would welcome Alberta and the White House has promised funds 550 Billion $ to support the movement. Trump is favourable to regime change in Canada. Just yesterday he threatened sending the USAF into Canadian Air Space if need be if we do not buy 88 F-35 fighter jets. We have to remind ourselves that the separatist movement in Alberta is small but vocal it gathers about 16% in popularity and most Albertans are proud Canadians. People do understand what they would loose if they were able to leave the Federation. Also our Constitution has no mechanism for such a thing to happen.

Quebec is scheduled to have an election in October, the out going out of office and the current Quebec Premier is retiring. The separatist Parti Quebecois and its young leader Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon (48) is fired up to impose a third referendum on separation from Canada. He is known in the media as PSPP is following an old recipe used by the PQ in the last 60 years, recalling the history of 250 years ago as the old grievance or of political wrongs 80 years old. The PQ lives in the past and has not program or ideas on how to solve the economic crisis, affordability issues, housing crisis and prefers to attack immigrants, and labels anyone who does not speak French, ”British colonials”. As a political leader PSPP is very dismissive of anyone who does not agree with him. He also refuses to see the serious threat Trump poses to Quebec, he believes he could make a deal. Thing is, at the moment it does appear as if he could win the next election in Quebec. The Polls indicate that 80% of Quebec’s population of 9 million are opposed and do not even want a referendum. Well let us hope that between today and October things change.

Another snow storm coming Sunday and Monday, we should be getting about 30cm of snow and high winds, squalls etc, from the North-East. I have no where to go so just stay home. Mr Teeter will not want to go out either, though we must.

This photo was taken yesterday Prime Minister Mark Carney and the star of the television series Heated Rivalry, 24 yr old Hudson Williams. Who gifted the PM this wool fleece he wore in one episode of the show. This fleece was made in Toronto by a couple who made it at home and have a small business which has now taken off, everybody wants that fleece. The event held in Ottawa was promoting Canadian movie industry. The PM said that studios “south of the border” want to tone down the content of Heated Rivalry. “What is the point of that?” he said. Carney then added that the show should only be made in Canada because it’s a country that “celebrates what makes us different.”

Canada, Friends, Iran, PEI, snowstorm, sunday, tea, USA, war, winter

I started writing this post last night Saturday, the wind was already fierce North-East, which is always on the Island a bad thing. Today Sunday it was a sunny day but very cold about minus 30 C. with the wind it is unpleasant. No not going for a brisk walk.

We have to remember that this is very unusual for the Island, it rarely gets this cold, minus 10C is more the norm but then it does not stay for more than two days. I can see on the radar the storm coming from the East Coast hitting New York City and then Boston and so on. We do expect a lot of snow that is fine by Tuesday afternoon it will have passed. Teeter does not like to go out in such weather even when wearing is tweed coat and hat. Still following the storm on radar and now by midnight Sunday it will be passing away from us and out in the Atlantic. So we may miss it, you have to love powerful wind storms to change the weather.

Today Sunday we had friends over for conversation, tea and cake, it was relaxing and fun. We have started doing that on a regular basis, it’s none stressful and it is nice to see people and just enjoy the company.

This coming week I have a dentist appointment and one with my optometrist, I broke my glasses. A luncheon next Saturday with all my colleagues (tourist guides) in preparation for the Season in late April. Otherwise it is quiet, I do go to the gym each day in our building. I am really trying to loose some weight, as you get older it becomes much more difficult.

It is late now and we are into Monday early morning, it looks like an attack on Iran to decapitate the regime is imminent and it looks like it will be massive. The USA has a long dispute with Iran since 1979, looks like regime change is about to happen but I can see it will be messy.

AI, Canada, Greenland, invasion, new world order, Trump, USA, war

Today 20 January in Davos our PM Mark Carney spoke. During the night of the 19th to 20th, Trump took an AI altered image and posted this image, showing Greenland and Canada and Venezuela as possessions of the USA.

A Head of State does not do this, he is threatening invasion and war on the USA closest allies and this is totally unacceptable. Americans have now to do more than protest in the streets, your dictator is not listening, he has become a menace to the peace of the world. This speech in Davos by PM Carney illustrates where we are now. He was then followed by President Macron of France who endorsed the speech of Carney. Many other world leaders and NATO members agree. We cannot live in a world of blackmail and threats.

Looking at the picture and map, you see the British PM, PM of Italy, the President of the EU, President Macron of France, German Chancellor, President of Finland, President Zelenskyy, and the Head of NATO. Trump may say he was joking, NO you cannot joke on such matter. The only other dictator who did this in Europe in 1939 was A. Hitler and we all know what happened next. Time is not for naïveté, but to be fully realistic on what may happen. Like many Canadians I am really tired of the threats of Trump and his supporters. Enough is enough.

Trump is also proposing to create a World Peace Committee, he would be the President of said committee and this new organization would replace the UN created after 1945. The USA last week stepped out of 66 UN organizations, Trump does not like the UN and that is clear. The only other country who abandoned the League of Nations in 1938 was Nazi Germany, do you see the pattern? We live in very dangerous times and Trump is demented.

While Trump is preparing the world for war in his quest for Greenland, Europe moved troops to Greenland, a US attack will only provoke a response from Denmark and all other NATO countries and Canada. The last hope is that the US military will stop the madman, we cannot wait for possible mid-term elections, they may not happen. Again with new tariffs on European goods, Trump is socking it to American consumers who will pay for even more expensive products. Tariffs imposed on Canada by the USA do not seem as bad now that China has removed its tariffs on Canadian goods and our Asian markets have re-opened. The news of Chinese EV in Canada is a very positive development for many with a price tag of $35,000.CDN. This is very bad news for Tesla in Canada.

Prime Minister Carney is continuing with his world trip, being today in Qatar and he was met with enthusiasm by the Emir and investors. It is confirmed that Qatar will finance important projects in Manitoba with the Port of Churchill and the rail to the Hudson Bay. This would allow Canada to bypass completely the USA in goods being exported to other parts of the world. There is already a port in Churchill and a railroad track since 1920, it all needs major infrastructure upgrades. This is only one of the many projects and investments. PM Carney now moves to DAVOS for the World Economic Forum and of course Trump will probably say more nonsense but other world leaders are prepared and he will probably be treated as at buffoon that he is. The latest polls show that PM Carney has a 50% approval rate amongst Canadians and a 90% as leader of the government. Despite the fact that the media talk non stop about the danger of China’s influence in Canada, only 3% of Canadians mention this topic. The big concern is affordability, followed by Trump’s hate of Canada. Despite immigration being a big to do in the USA, in Canada it does not figure as a great concern, the government reduced the annual intake number and changed the student visa numbers downward and solved the problem.

Since Friday we have had lots of high winds and snow. More is on the way on Sunday night into Monday with a North Eastern storm, which are usually pretty bad for the Island. This may mean a snow day for schools tomorrow, kids will be happy. The radar shows yellow colour which is heavy to strong, we may get more rain with a mix of snow, a mess in other words.

A quote from the Prime Minister Mark Carney given to the media in China; ‘‘We take the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.” This is the philosophy of the PM, a pragmatic one dealing with today’s reality. Such a departure from the philosophy of Justin Trudeau who believe teaching lesson, virtue signalling and wishful thinking would solve all problems.

This weekend is the 211th anniversary of the formal internment of Queen Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI by her brother in law, the restored to the throne of France, King Louis XVIII in Paris. Every year a mass is said at the Chapelle expiatoire in Paris for their souls. They are reburied in January 1815 in the Royal mausoleum in the Basilica of St-Denis. Both were executed in 1793. She was a young woman 34 yrs old and had 2 young children. It is known now that she was dying of a uterine cancer and Robespierre for political reasons wanted to have her executed quickly, her trial was a farce, no real charges and it was all politics.

Another anniversary this year is the 300 birthday of Prince Heinrich of Prussia, brother of King Frederich II the Great of Prussia. His palace in Berlin is today the seat of the Humboldt University on Unter den Linden. He was a great general never lost a battle and diplomat, but he often disagreed with his brother the King on military strategy. He was like his brother Frederick, despite being married, a homosexual. In 1786, the President of the Continental Congress, in the USA and Von Steuben, the Prussian general who served in the American Continental army, suggested to Alexander Hamilton that Prince Heinrich should become monarch of the United States, but the prince declined the offer.

I also learned today that my family parish church on Fullum street in Montreal is to be demolished. This is were I was baptized in 1956. The church was built in 1913 and like many churches in Montreal, due to economic cost, it was closed many years ago and then victim of a fire which destroyed the interior, it is now derelict and demolition is the only solution. It would be replaced by housing for low income families. Many church buildings in Montreal have become concert halls, condominiums, community centres or simply destroyed. All these buildings were built on a monumental scale of stone with copper roofs, lavish decorations inside. Several priests would serve the parish, today you are lucky to find one to say mass. People have a nostalgic attachment to such buildings but this is where it stops. The same story repeats itself in every Canadian city. In Toronto, many churches have been sold, developers keep the facade and usually a huge condo tower is built behind or on top. Times have changed and in Canada we demolish heritage buildings, we do not keep them, unless there’s a significant touristic element to them. It has to be said that the congregations in churches has dwindled to a handful of people and bingo nights still attract the over 70 crowd. For me it is just another vanishing site like so many of my life and family memories.
