Today was a quiet day, overcast but spring like with no wind. Went on line to make final bookings of excursions and dining option for our cruise in October. Though there are lots of excursion offers per city including private car and chauffeur if you prefer, many are already filling up quickly. The ship carries 740 passengers with a minimum of 94 sq metres per person. There are 4 cooking classes and an equal number of Tapas bar stops, I have done all that on many previous visits to Spain so will skip it. I prefer visiting markets in Morocco and old towns or hill tops. The one place we could not find anything we wanted to visit was Cartagena, nothing appealed to us. Decades ago I visited Cartagena, Colombia and maybe once on the cruise I will discover something we might like. We are not visiting Gibraltar, we did years ago and saw the sights and the crazy monkeys of the British Crown. We will stay on board this time. I remember being impressed by the fact that the distance to the North Coast of Africa is only 13 Km.
In Morocco I decided to take an all day tour to Marrakech and a walking tour of Tangier. In Cadiz we will do a food-wine and equestrian show. I also opted to return to visit the garden of the Palace of the Alhambra in Granada, the last time we visited the garden it impressed me, we then visited the palace by moonlight, that was a WOW experience. Washington Irving lived there for some time.
The partial view of the gardens of the Generalalife at the Alhambra.
There are 9 restaurants on board, but we have to reserve for 2 of the specialty restaurants one is Nobu and the other is Italian. I really want to try Nobu given its reputation. As for the Italian one they do have an interesting menu. They also have a BeefBar but I do not see anything I might particularly like, there is also their Continental cuisine venue and the menu on offer is pretty good.
From past experience you are kept pretty busy on a ship and I am sure we will this time around.
No I did not watch the State of the Union Address, I simply could not be bothered and I do not like fools like Trump. Of course I heard what he said, snippets, here and there. What I am amaze as a Canadian, is how different the US government and the practices of Congress are different from our system in Canada. I also include here your Justice system and the Courts, completely baffled how it all works compared to Canada. I cannot see how our two systems could be reconciled in any way given our very different history despite the fact we are neighbour countries. This has been the myth of the longest undefended border or friends. Nations have NO friends only interests.
In US newspapers opinion pieces are appearing now criticizing the numerous trips between Washington DC and Florida by Trump to go play golf. The cost of the flights, the security and motorcade all following him whenever he travels is in the millions of dollars. In Canada if the Prime Minister or the Governor General who travel on old military planes with a fresh coat of paint, ordinary airline food is served and on arrival, the Canadian Ambassador picks them up at the airport in whatever country they landed, unless the host country government supply transport. We have constant questions in the House of Commons from the Opposition about travel expenses. At one point, there were questions about swizzle sticks and slices of lemon for drinks. The PM travelling is not cheap but everyone is very mindful of Official travel expenses which are in the public domain. Today PM Carney left for India on a trade mission of 9 days.
During the Olympics, J.D. Vance travelled to Italy to attend sporting events. It was reported that he took with him 44 SUVs and all manner of staffs and security for this trip, all of it flown overseas at a cost of $55 million dollars. When I look at Britain and the King travelling in London and around the country, his motorcade is usually 3 cars and 6 police motorcycles. In Canada, the Governor General and the Prime Minister have a 2 car motorcade. Yes there is police presence but never on the level you see in the USA. Same applies to Members of Parliament and Senators in Ottawa, they have little to no protection. It is unthinkable to have police guarding them. The approach is so different as is the mentality.
Well from Monday afternoon to Tuesday night the wind blew and the snow came down, it did shut the city down completely, the roads were impassable. I had to take Mr Teeter out nonetheless, he was not happy but… I went through our building garage exit and noticed at the end of the driveway a car abandoned stuck in snow. At that point there was about a foot of the white stuff. The building across the street lost their heat, the heat pumps shut down frozen by the storm. In our building we went to the emergency supply but it was anemic. The technicians came and it took 2 days to fix it all. I had done all my shopping for food just a few hours before the storm arrived like everyone else. In the meantime while the storm raged outside, I was texting with my brother and sister-in-law in Florida and telling them that we were drinking gin and tonic out of the bottle and some moonshine. I think she believed us.

Today I had a luncheon date and for some reason, I thought we were Tuesday and in fact it’s Wednesday. Oh well the group is getting together again in March on by Birthday.
We started to made plans for our cruise in October, on Crystal Serenity. We start in Barcelona, we have been some 6 times and this time we will see the Church of the Sagrada Família with all its towers completed after 144 years of construction. The front facade is still not finished and probably it will take another 20 years to complete. It is a spectacular building.
Then we sail to Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Cartagena, Melilla on the coast of North Africa, Gibraltar been there so I will probably stay on board, Casablanca and Tangier in Morocco, back to Cadiz and finally Lisbon. Lots of excursions, many involve hiking and walking, tours of 8 hours, some travelling to see sights. There is lots to choose from, but I am reading with the eye of a guide who knows how those excursions descriptions are written, a case of reader beware.
Tomorrow Thursday we are having dinner with a friend at the Cork and Cast restaurant on Victoria Row, our friends Rachel and Doug are the owners and they have been in the business for years. Rachel is a great cook and they do have a very nice menu. The restaurant is in what was the financial district of Charlottetown back in the years before 1900. Inside the restaurant behind the bar is the old bank vault and above it all the safety deposit boxes, now a decor artifact. Lots of large plants and a cosy atmosphere.
DOUG behind the bar, they do some great cocktails, one with vodka, pink lemonade and a popsicle.
I am trying to finish my new notes for all the different tours I will be giving this summer. I also translate all the name of fish and seafood species in French and always have also a conversion table for Metric to Imperial. Everything in Canada is in Metric and this includes the speed limit on the roads, so if you see 50 sign it is not miles per hour but Kilometre per hour. Same for gasoline it is advertised in Litres not gallons, I get a lot of questions on that, seems to create endless confusion for my tourists. Currently the price of regular gas is $1.49 per litre multiply by 4 and you get in gallons $5.96 . But the price fluctuates a lot from week to week, so if you are friends with a police officer, he will know 24 hours in advance if the price goes up or down, that can be helpful.
Many Canadians have fled Puerto Vallarta in recent days and we had many friends who have returned home. Many Canadians also vacation in Cuba and our PM and government decided to send food aid as Mexico did. Trump is threatening more tariffs if we help, big deal. The situation in Cuba has angered many Canadians and is viewed as American Imperialism.
Well finally it is Summer and the weather has warmed up and is quite pleasant in the mid 20 to 30C. Considering that we are in mid July not to early for sunny days. My sister and husband are arriving in a week to visit PEI, they have been here before and loved it. Nothing like going from the Big Apple NYC to the Big Potato Charlottetown. Like Frank Sinatra sings, If you can make it there you can make it anywhere in PEI.
Canada and Downton Abbey, I did not know that Highclere Castle owned and lived in by the George Reginald Oliver Molyneux Herbert, 8th Earl of Carnarvon (born 10 November 1956) was the place where on July 1, 1867 the Canadian Constitution was proclaimed after the vote in the Westminster House of Commons. Each year a reception is given by Lord Carnarvon to mark the occasion, his family have a close relationship with Canada.
For some time now, we have been planning a trip, the problem was where to go. We did not want to return to places we had visited previously or lived in, though Rome is always a good place to return to or Sicily. There are many other places/cities.
So Mitch who has an excellent blog on his and SG exciting life in Spain, http://www.movingwithmitchell.com , inspired us, you could say he was an influencer. Also our travels to Spain and our cruises around the Mediterranean gave us food for thought on where we could go next. In 2026 will be our 48th yr as a couple and also major birthdays, I will be 70 and Will 80. We always travelled to a major area of the world for such birthdays, like Cairo, Chicago, Istanbul, Beijing, Rome. Will also celebrated his 60th in a major trip to Vietnam which we saw from top to bottom, that was a dream. So the tradition continues and we booked for October 2026 a cruise on Crystal Serenity which was totally refurbished in 2023. It is a small 700 passenger ship, though the ratio is 1 pax for 97 sq feet and this is what we like smaller the better. We will start in Barcelona and wish to see the completed church of the Sagrada Familia, the last time was 12 years ago and it was already spectacular. Then visit Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Cartagena, Melilla, Gibraltar, Casablanca, Tangier, Cadiz and Lisbon, so 4 countries in all, Spain, UK, Morocco, Portugal. I will have to read up on all those ports and sights.
Looking at the ship it has nice restaurants, a NOBU Japanese cuisine, which I would love to try. The concept for this restaurant was developed by Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, chef and restaurateur known for his fusion cuisine blending traditional Japanese dishes with Peruvian ingredients. His restaurants have been awarded Michelin stars.
The excursions look very interesting and I want to ensure I get on them. There is one on Arabic calligraphy and visiting a souk. I use to go to the Khan in Cairo, as a market it was fantastic. I can polish by bargaining skills again. Very excited by this prospect. I have to read up on all the other excursions.
Our Cabin has 406 sq feet of space, looks spacious and well appointed. The ship amenities are great. They also have 24 hr room service, dial 3 my kind of roughing it. Crystal Named “World’s Best” By Travel + Leisure in 2025 Awards. We are excited by this opportunity.
Every day we get lovely pictures of Cordoba, prior it was Fuengirola in Spain, dear Mitchell is a great walker and he takes lovely photos, this in turn gives me idea of places I could visit.
Places in Europe I would love to see again or discover. To visit again; Dresden, Granada, Rome, Berlin, Milan, Vienna, Salzburg. To discover; Cadiz, Casablanca, Tangier, Porto, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca.
There is a cruise with Crystal Serenity in 2026 to several ports in Spain and Morocco, ending in Portugal. It is a small ship about 700 passengers, just the right size for me.
Then today I saw pictures of the Zwinger Palace which was built across the street from the Royal Palace of Dresden 1710. The word means Outer Ward, it was built to house collections and to give banquets and house exotic plants and flowers. It was gravely damaged in the bombing raids of February 1945 and left in ruins until 1990. Today it houses the famous porcelain collection of the Wettin Family who ruled Saxony for many centuries. It is well worth seeing, beautifully displayed and dating from the 17th century. The Wettin have the distinction of being related to the Bourbon of France, the mother of Louis XVI, Maria-Josepha of Saxony was a Wettin and they are also related to the British Royal Family when George V, considered taking the name Wettin in 1917 instead of Windsor.
We visited Dresden several times in the last 25 years and it is always a discovery with the rebuilt baroque style buildings and the restored collections. It would take at least 3 days to have a good view of the many collections in the Royal Palace and in the Zwinger and see the city on the Elbe river.
Here is a picture in the Fall of 1945, leaving the Zwinger in ruin and the city demolished.
Restored around 2010, the gardens are undergoing more restoration work at the moment, in order to bring it back as it was around 1900.
Porcelain collection partial view. The collection were saved all of it was mothballed and moved out, avoiding the destruction of the war. So I do have a lot of options.
Life is a patchwork of moments — laughter, solitude, everyday joys, and quiet aches. Through scribbled stories, I explore travels both far and inward, from sunrise over unfamiliar streets to the comfort of home. This is life as I see it, captured in ink and memory. Stick around; let's wander together.
Jerry and I get around. In 2011, we moved from the USA to Spain. We now live in Córdoba. Jerry y yo nos movemos. En 2011, nos mudamos de EEUU a España. Ahora vivimos en Córdoba.
