Who is AIRE

Angelenos for an Inclusive and Regenerative Economy (AIRE) is a coalition led by LAANE and made up of organizations throughout LA County that are committed to building an equitable and climate-resilient future for generations to come. Together with our coalition partners, we seek to achieve a union-made, renewable energy and water-secure future for Los Angeles that invests in equitable access to good jobs and benefits for frontline communities.

Our coalition members are: CBE So Cal, Food & Water Watch, Heal The Bay, IBEW 11, Jobs to Move America, LA Water Keeper, NRDC, Pacoima Beautiful, PSR-LA, River in Action, Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE), SCOPE, Sierra Club, TNC, TPL, Tree People, Turn, and UTLA.

What AIRE does

Equity: Those closest to climate change’s impacts should be at the center of creating solutions. Equity means that we all get our needs met and can thrive.

Green family-sustaining jobs: These well-paying, union jobs provide long-term employment and stability for individuals and families and protect workers from mistreatment, negligence, or low wages. We know that what’s good for our workers is good for our environment.

Public investment: Public benefits should be shared by all community members, not just the wealthy few. This includes publicly built solar panels or E.V. charging stations. These investments secure access to safe, clean water and energy for all.

Current Area of Work

  • We are combating climate change by investing in our schools. We want to see thriving communities for us, and that means investing in schools, workers, and students.
  • How? With greening, jobs, and infrastructure investments!
    • We need to take action now to ensure that our communities, workers, and youth have the opportunities to thrive and build sustainable and happy futures.

Past Work

Utility Justice

Public institutions like LADWP must directly provide goods and services to our communities. We worked on a Utility Justice campaign, commonly found online as #UtilityDebtRelief, that advocated for and won the elimination of COVID-19 accumulated utility debt, no shutoffs during extreme weather conditions, and direct allocation of funds for debt relief to low-income LADWP ratepayers which helped 77,000 people.

Water Justice

Water is a human right. We worked diligently to pass Measure W in 2018, which was designated to meet state regulations and the Federal Clean Water Act, improve water quality, and fund projects and programs to increase stormwater capture and reduce urban runoff pollution in LA County.

LA100

We’ve been involved in developing LA100 Equity Strategies. These are actionable strategies to improve equity for underserved communities. Ensuring diverse community voices were included from the beginning, the project synthesized community guidance researched current and past inequities, and conducted extensive modeling and analysis to identify strategies to improve equity outcomes in Los Angeles’ transition to clean energy.

UPCT

We believe that family-sustaining jobs are key to paving the way to LA’s green energy future. Over the years, we’ve worked alongside LADWP and IBEW Local 18 to create the Utility Pre-craft Trainee Program. Through the UPCT program, Angelenos from all backgrounds could move from low-wage jobs into stable, high-paying public-sector careers.
