To Ohio And West

Apr. 28th, 2023 12:00 pm My tweets

  • Thu, 13:11: This was originally the old German neighborhood. The whole neighborhood got torn down to build either Interstate 90 or Interstate 77. This was at East Ninth Street and Woodland Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. The year is 1953, the same year my parents were born. https://t.co/yx9F3gXeS8
  • Thu, 13:31: This is East Ninth Street in Cleveland, Ohio around 1946. This is looking north from Rockwell Avenue. In the distance is Lake Erie. I don’t know what that arrow is for. You see a car turning onto Rockwell. https://t.co/p1ij8I5cQp
  • Thu, 14:00: My nephew looks like a little angel. https://t.co/iZ7bkV6vvR
  • Thu, 15:13: How much does rioting and looting affect the overall economy? It actually doesn’t. If you want to smash windows and burn things just for the hell of it, it might be bad in other ways but it’s not going to affect anything big like the GDP.
  • Thu, 19:20: Getting “tough” on crime has some real problems, like having six cop cars swoop in on me and scare me to death while I was walking late at night last October.
  • Thu, 19:50: My dad is getting weird. Anymore he will only eat certain things. When we go out, he will only eat sushi, certain Vietnamese food and certain Mexican food and that’s it. He used to eat just about everything.
  • Thu, 20:15: Sometimes when men have to have their prostate completely removed, they have to walk around with a leg bag, sometimes permanently. Then again, a lot of people are incontinent without having their prostate removed.
  • Thu, 20:42: Some people are like “Oh no! Cleveland is still losing population.” I’m like “Your point being? Is this a problem?” New urbanism is NEW urbanism. It’s a whole new way of thinking. In many instances it’s as much about deconstructing cities as it is about constructing cities.
  • Thu, 20:53: I once literally had a dream about living in a world with flying cars. We also had floating rest stops and floating gas stations in the sky. In my dream all these amenities in the sky literally had very long water pipes and sewer pipes and power cables.
  • Thu, 21:12: This would make sense if you are a furry fan. Let’s make music together. 😁 https://t.co/RxOSgHXuAl

  • Wed, 20:13: This is looking south on East Ninth Street in 1966. This doesn’t look like downtown Cleveland because you don’t see any tall buildings looking in this direction but this is actually the intersection of Prospect Avenue and East Ninth Street. https://t.co/JYiwWWFdkh
  • Thu, 08:48: Being controversial gets people’s attention. BE CONTROVERSIAL!
  • Thu, 09:06: It’s almost as if Jeff Dunham is making fun of me in specific. In this skit his puppet is like a social justice warrior with no mental filters or emotional regulation. https://t.co/Acpm9CCQUZ
  • Thu, 09:41: This is looking south on East Ninth Street from Rockwell Avenue in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. The year is 1951. On the left is St. John’s Cathedral. That little street on the right there is Rockwell Avenue. https://t.co/c29hNm1Kwi
  • Thu, 09:51: My father is a terrible patient. He is driving my mother to her breaking point. My mother in turn is driving ME to my breaking point.
  • Thu, 09:57: My dad’s cancer probably isn’t terminal. The problem is, my dad wants to be 20 again and he doesn’t want to be tied down by his crazy wife and his crazy adult children and his high maintenance grandchildren. Now that he has cancer, he’s really feeling trapped by us.
  • Thu, 10:03: I’m picking up some telepathic vibes from someone in Northwestern Pennsylvania. There’s a little radio in my head. This person’s mother or stepmother AND his brother AND his sister are all thinking the same thing. They are thinking that this person REALLY needs to talk to me.

  • Tue, 18:42: Yet another another health insurance problem. Now we have a problem and 10 different people are telling us 10 different things. Of course the timing had to be exactly how it was. Like I needed one more thing to worry about. I keep telling myself it’s only money.
  • Tue, 18:50: I know it’s only money when I have a healthcare problem but sometimes I just don’t want to hear it. Sometimes it’s not about the money. I don’t get paid enough for what I do. There again, it’s only money but it’s not about the money.
  • Tue, 18:55: Nothing like walking around the park screaming at the top of my lungs and people looking concerned. 😧
  • Tue, 19:17: Our dog Simon has been eating but he only seems to like people food and one day he’ll want sourdough bread but not challah bread and then the next day he doesn’t want the sourdough bread. A couple days ago, Simon really wanted to eat a lot of beans.
  • Tue, 19:26: I went to the Garfield Park Reservation without the dogs this evening. I needed time without them. I’m standing under Route 14 in Garfield Heights. If you look closely there’s a train in the second picture. https://t.co/aL1ndKlqGp
  • Tue, 19:48: We don’t have to always fix the broken roads and the broken windows and the broken whatever. They can be beautiful all by themselves. When your gut tells you not to fix it, then don’t fix it. Nobody seems to get that.
  • Tue, 20:52: Well. It appears that Medicaid will pay for some things retroactively. My sister is telling me I shouldn’t freak out. I’m still freaking out.
  • Tue, 21:13: It started pouring and I was still a half mile walk from the car. I didn’t have an umbrella either. I wasn’t going to bother running to the car. I was too tired. I really didn’t care either. I took a picture of the blossoms and other stuff around Garfield Park. https://t.co/lod7WPNLXU
  • Tue, 21:20: This banner says “Take America Back.” In my opinion, we need to give America away. We need to give America away in the same way that we need to give love away in the humanistic sense. Give America away! 😁 https://t.co/TfEKXPzrzp
  • Tue, 21:25: I was once that slow autistic child at play just like the sign says. I got through it. That autistic child is going to become an adult child someday. Hopefully this person will live in a more understanding world than the one I grew up in. I’m still dealing with resentment. https://t.co/KTqUEdyllO

  • Sun, 19:15: My dad really wasn’t doing well tonight. This is going to be a long road. 😞
  • Sun, 23:58: My friend Luke was like “If you feel you can’t do your job as a home health aide anymore, my factory is hiring. All things considered, the pay isn’t bad and the benefits are pretty good.” Yeah. I can be like all the other home health aides that walked away from their calling
  • Mon, 00:31: In the western world, we collectively have this expectation that money and power bring happiness. If you don’t have a lot of money and power, it’s not socially acceptable to be happy. A lot of the problem is this expectation of money and power.
  • Mon, 00:35: I can have empathy and respect for people who love the United States. This does not mean that I myself love the United States. I actually hate most countries but I can still respect those who love this country without loving it myself.
  • Mon, 00:38: It’s important to love and respect people in the humanistic sense. You can still love and respect someone without agreeing with them.
  • Mon, 00:43: Even if someone doesn’t agree with me, they can still respect ME and respect where I am coming from. It means they still heard me even if they won’t agree with me. It means we can either work things out or part ways on good terms without burning bridges. This stuff matters.
  • Mon, 00:51: Why should a progressive respect a political conservative as a human being even if you don’t agree with them? For starters, there were plenty of Trump supporters who liked Bernie Sanders but did not like Joe Biden.
  • Mon, 01:08: In these shopping malls, these climate controlled towns within the suburbs, you could shop eat, see a movie, get together and even go um…. DANCING!?! Yeah. This was a senior citizens dance in the Westgate Mall in Rocky River, Ohio off of Route 20. https://t.co/PAVIamb2ic
  • Mon, 01:23: These shopping malls were climate controlled towns with climate controlled indoor streets complete with STREET LAMPS and indoor LANDSCAPING!?! Bring Mother Nature INSIDE! This was unnatural to the point of being creepy and disconcerting. https://t.co/hLyERgp3JY

  • Sat, 16:32: Well that explains it. This year was already weird in a disconcerting way. https://t.co/L3a6n6Q1cW
  • Sat, 16:47: @rice_rust_belt Did you say that was YOU on the train holding the door open for Classy Whale in this video? https://t.co/VsxWbQjptJ
  • Sat, 22:21: This was Severance Mall in Cleveland Heights back in 1971. Shopping Malls were like climate controlled towns where people could get together, hang out, shop, eat, see a movie. You could spend a whole afternoon at a mall. https://t.co/fpGtRUN6f0
  • Sun, 00:12: If I can stay reasonably content and enjoy what I do reasonably well and not feel too guilty, I’m okay if the world crumbles around me. Good times come is all shapes and sizes.
  • Sun, 00:15: We have to make some more phone calls tomorrow. Apparently I’m going on Medicaid. That might affect how many hours I can work, not that it matters since I’ve been missing so much work due to illness.
  • Sun, 00:57: They’re all waiting to see Star Wars back in 1977. This was Severance Mall in Cleveland Heights. Originally the movie theatre was in the middle of Severance Mall. Then in 1985 they opened a new multi screen cineplex at the north end of the mall, I believe. https://t.co/atbnmM0okH

  • Thu, 22:28: The younger generations, they invented preferred pronouns. Rioting has been around for thousands of years so younger people did not invent that. They didn’t invent communism either. Younger people also did not invent the fuck around and find out drug culture of the 1960s.
  • Thu, 23:03: I know there is a God. I know it like I know the sun will come up tomorrow. I also feel that God has some explaining to do. Some people say that God won’t give you more than you can handle. Well. It feels like God gave me more than I can handle. 🤗
  • Thu, 23:46: What do you see in this relatively small space? I see houses and a golf course and a baseball diamond. This is all mixed in with a very busy urban freeway, a chemical plant and part of a steel mill. Only in Cleveland. This would make a new urbanist freak out. https://t.co/zjm6WNAkZo

  • Wed, 17:11: So. My dad went in for more tests today. The results were more or less what we were hoping for, so it isn’t the end yet. Just the same, the cancer is aggressive. I think he has one more test before he can begin treatment. Just the same, he will need surgery and radiation.
  • Wed, 20:54: One of the reasons the Great Lakes has so much fresh water is not all that many people live here compared to the rest of the world. If climate refugees started moving here from the rest of the world, the cost of living would REALLY get bad and we wouldn’t have as much fresh water
  • Wed, 20:59: Transit in New York City is a case of induced demand. You could add more trains and add more subways and people would just take the trains or the subways more and things would STILL be crowded like never before. The problem is New York City is just too big to be sustainable.
  • Wed, 22:08: Doug Petersen was my scout master in Boy Scout Troop 103 when I lived in Bloomington, Indiana. He was definitely a significant male role model for me when I was between the ages of 11 and 16. Those were not easy years for me. I did not have a lot of friends back then. https://t.co/SMJ0acWDNw
  • Thu, 10:21: A guy in a dog costume singing about bacon pancakes? Yeah. That has been stuck in my head for the last three months. I want more like this. I want more. More more more…. I also want a dog costume like this. https://t.co/D0r82jJdc7
  • Thu, 12:24: This is what happens when you don’t want to wear your leg bag. When your leg bag is properly attached you can go ahead and go and nobody will know the difference, your leg bag just might bulge a little bit more. If you leave a trail of pee, that’s just not going to work. https://t.co/uLU1NqdBcC

  • Tue, 18:06: This was Richmond Mall in 1966. It was about 15 miles east of downtown Cleveland. It closed last year. The central fountain looks like an evil eye with lasers shooting out of it. I have an elderly friend named Elaine. I would often take Elaine to Richmond Mall to go shopping https://t.co/wFPdF29bwl

  • Sun, 15:22: There are two ways of getting people’s attention. You can be really nice or really nasty. People don’t remember you as much if you are just average.
  • Sun, 15:26: There can be a time or place to deliberately piss people off. You just have to keep track of who you are trying to provoke and what exactly you are trying to get. When good behavior won’t get you the results you need, that’s when you behave badly to get attention.
  • Sun, 15:32: A lot of us urbanisms are attracted to the liveliness of the city but we are also attracted to the chaos and the dysfunction. People will put up with more of your shenanigans in the city. It’s also fun to watch the shenanigans take place.
  • Sun, 18:03: Franklin Ave., Aliquippa PA Beaver County around 1938 and the approximate location today. I counted at least four beer signs. All gone. PA 51 crossed in the 1950’s where the red brick building appears. The bend in the road took you to the entrance to the mill. https://t.co/nE0ZB781hv
  • Sun, 19:40: When I was growing up, not a lot was known about autism and dyslexia and other developmental disorders. It’s not always easy working with developmentally challenged people but my teachers in public school really could have done better by me.
  • Sun, 19:58: Some autistic people misinterpret someone being friendly as someone who wants to be more than just friends. I may complain a lot about my lack of a sex drive but the truth is, my lack of interest may have kept me out of trouble over the years.
  • Sun, 20:05: When I see the downward spiral our healthcare system is experiencing, it’s so tempting to get jaded and say “Defund healthcare. What are you waiting for?” These are confusing times. Our healthcare system is very unhealthy.
  • Sun, 20:09: My dad is embarrassed about his health. Nobody in our family seems to quite know how to make him feel better.

  • Sat, 20:30: RT @Ex_InvisibleMan: Doan Brook - Shaker Lakes Park https://t.co/CGZ0oMDHjX
  • Sat, 20:35: My dad’s latest hobby is developing video games. He says it’s hard to learn how to do in your early 70s. Once again, my mother doesn’t share or appreciate his interests and he feel hurt by that.
  • Sat, 20:39: Conservatives just assume that progressives are not pragmatic. A lot of progressives are VERY pragmatic. Don’t take your opponent for granted!
  • Sat, 21:03: The right side of the bridge was supposed to be used for the Cleveland Union Terminal Railroad. The left side was supposed to be used for what is now the red line rapid transit. https://t.co/MX41rLSGaN
  • Sat, 21:18: American Rust Belt cities CAN have historical value but they do not have the same historical value of some of these European cities. I mean, in comparison to Prague in the Czech Republic, how much is a place like Youngstown, Ohio REALLY worth saving?
  • Sat, 21:23: I don’t want to live in a city that is a playground for the rich. Don’t get me wrong, my parents have enough money to be comfortable, but gentrification is not the only way to improve a neighborhood. I don’t know if gentrification is even a good way to improve a neighborhood.
  • Sat, 21:44: Because the tech industry is such a great place to be right now…. Yeah…. People in my family who aren’t retired work in healthcare. Some of my friends and acquaintances work in healthcare too. It used to be a good way to make a living.
  • Sat, 21:51: My parents and I finally took down all the Christmas decorations today at my parents’ house. We managed to get all the Christmas stuff down before Easter.
  • Sat, 21:57: One of the things I like about riding an actual subway is the mystery of emerging from an underground station into the daylight and not knowing where you are, especially in an unfamiliar city. The sense of mystery is fun.
  • Sat, 22:09: In Akron they made rubber. All the other major population centers in Northeastern Ohio and Eastern Ohio had major steel operations. I’m just amazed there was a use for all that steel. Steel mills are such dirty places.
