The conclusion to Whispers in the Night
Amber shuffled into the kitchen. She yawned as she opened the fridge to get the baked oatmeal and milk out.
After filling her bowl with oatmeal, she grabbed the milk jug to pour some into her bowl.
Not again! Was she losing her mind? How could she be out of milk again?
She knew she had left milk in the jug last night for her breakfast this morning, but now there wasn’t nary a drop in it!
Something was going on, for milk hadn’t been the only thing disappearing. Her chocolate stash was too!
Grandma Clara would have told her that strange things were happening because Amber opened her umbrella in her home and walked under a ladder the other day. Her sweet grandma had always been superstitious!
Amber didn’t know what was up, but she wasn’t superstitious, and she wasn’t crazy. Things were disappearing here. That was a fact, but why?
She stayed sitting at the table drinking her lemon tea, looking out her big bay window and thinking.
After a little while, she got up, knowing she had to get ready to leave. Her to-do list was a mile long, and she would never finish it if she didn’t get started. When she finished her errands, maybe she could come back and soak in her garden tub with some Lavendar epson salt and try to figure out the mystery.
There weren’t any neighbors close by, so a lot of the time, she didn’t bother locking her back door. Maybe she would start. Was someone actually sneaking into her house to steal chocolate?
Shaking her head, she walked out of the door, locking it behind her.
He watched her car pull away.
“You can come out now. She is gone. We need to hurry. ”
“Why? I told you I didn’t want to leave. We have it good here. She has lots of chocolate and milk to wash it down with.”
Teddy shook his head. “She is growing suspicious. Soon, she might find our hideaway spot. The hidden door under the stairs, leading to a room, had been the perfect hideaway for a while.
Little Trish stuck out her bottom lip in a pout as she crossed her arms.
“So what! I want her to find us. I like her. She reminds me of mommy.”
Teddy rolled his eyes. “You don’t even remember our mom. We were toddlers when we came to the orphanage.”
“But she is pretty and looks like mommy in my dreams. Please let us stay here.”
How could he say no to those big brown eyes that were starting to puddle up.
Sighing, he rustled his hand through her golden brown curly locks. “Ok, we will stay for now.”
“Thank you, thank you, Teddy!” She hugged him.
To be honest, he didn’t want to leave either. He didn’t know where they would go. All he knew is that he would do all he could to keep them from being sent back to the orphanage!”
“Did you hear that?”
Alabaster didn’t say anything, but Snowball could tell by his face that he had.
“So thats why they came here. To escape the orphanage. Those poor children. They have nobody but each other.” Snowball said, feeling a lump rise in his throat.
There was silence as the two elves were lost in thought. Teddy and his sister hadn’t noticed them hiding behind the door.
“Are you thinking what I am thinking?” Alabaster asked after a few moments.
“How do I know unless you tell me what you are thinking, but since great minds think alike, then I would say yes.”
“Well, I am not sure who the other great mind is, but I think we should take them back to the North Pole with us.”
“A perfect idea! I would have thought of it after my other idea.” Snowball replied.
“What was your other idea?”
“I thought of searching the kitchen to see if she has any black jellybeans.”
“You and your sweet tooth. I am sure there will be black jellybeans waiting for you back at the NorthPole. We have to leave now before the woman returns.”
Snowball grunted. “Well, let me remind you that we would have been at the North Pole already if you hadn’t got us lost. ”
“Pffft! Is it my fault that Dasher didn’t know the way? Besides, if we hadn’t got lost, we wouldn’t have came here. Now we may be able to make two children real happy. It all worked out.” Alabaster said, with a smile.
“Go introduce yourself to the children and ask if they want to come to the North Pole with us. I will go and get Dasher ready to go.” Alabaster said, making his way to the backyard.
They had only arrived late last night. Thankfully, the back door had been unlocked so they could sneak in.
Alabaster didn’t have to wait for long for Snowball to show up.
“Are we really going to the North Pole to see Santa?” Tish came running into the yard. Her eyes brimmed with excitement!
“Where is the reindeer? Snowball told us we were going to ride on a real reindeer!” Teddy didn’t believe in Santa, but he loved animals and wanted to see a real reindeer.
“Umm…yes, Alabaster, where is Dasher?”
“It appears he dashed away!”
Snowball smacked his head. Alabaster was always ready with a pun.
Now, what would they do? Much to their relief, they didn’t have to worry. Dasher soon appeared .
Tish squealed with pleasure at the sight of Dasher. Teddy didn’t squeal, but there was no doubt that he was impressed with Dasher.
While the children were talking with Dasher, Alabaster pulled Snowball aside.
“There is one thing I need to tell you. When we get back, if anyone questions you. Yes, you did have permission from Santa to take Dasher on an excursion.”
Snowball raised his eyebrows. “You didn’t clear it with Santa before taking Dasher!?”
“I was going to let CandyCane know, but she should have been at the reindeer stall when I went there yesterday morning. I couldn’t find her, and you know Santa and Mrs. Claus are away right now. I figured you and I would only be gone for the day. What harm could it do?”
“But instead, we got lost, and CandyCane is probably going nuts wondering where Dasher is. Santa had assigned her reindeer duty when he was gone.”
Snowball’s lips curved into a sly smile. “I don’t think we have anything to worry about, buddy. Even if Santa came back early. She won’t want to admit that she doesn’t know where Dasher is, so she will do anything in her power to keep Santa away from looking closely in the reindeer stalls.”
“Good thinking!” Alabaster slapped him on the back, and soon everyone was seated upon Dasher’s back.
Alabaster whispered into Tish’s ear, as she was in front of him.
In a loud voice, she gave the command. “Dash away, Dasher! To the North Pole!”
Amber pulled into the driveway, hitting the garage door before she put her car in park.
What had she seen? Was that a flying reindeer?? Impossible! But that sure was what it looked like streaking across the sky in front of her!
She grabbed the chocolate bar in the grocery bag beside her. Maybe Whispering Vale really was a magical place.
