Recommendations for shows and movies we have enjoyed (or not!)

Witching Hour: Diving Back Into Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches

Our latest watch has us back in New Orleans! We revisited Season 1 of Mayfair Witches to prep for the new season, and it’s been an interesting ride. From neurosurgery to ancient family curses, here’s how the show stacks up against our old favorites like True Blood.

Next Gen Chef on Netflix

Next Gen Chef

We haven't watched a good cooking competition in a while. When Next Gen Chef came up on Netflix, we decided to give it a try. Filmed at the Culinary Institute of America, it features 21 young chefs competing for a half-million-dollar prize and the title of "Next Gen Chef". Definitely recommended for your watch list if you need a new culinary fix.

Lynley – What We’re Watching

We recently started the new Lynley on BritBox. This reboot of the classic series is a bit more modern than the original but retains the charm. Leo Suter and Sofia Barclay have great chemistry as the mismatched duo. While standard police procedural fare, it’s a solid, comforting watch. If you need a reliable mystery series for your evenings, this one fits the bill nicely.

Return to Paradise — What We’re Watching

Our latest streaming watch is the first season of Return to Paradise on BritBox. This is a new Australian spin-off of the Death in Paradise franchise. The mystery formula is familiar, but the dynamic of the detective being a local (who everyone dislikes) rather than a fish-out-of-water is a refreshing twist. We enjoyed the first season quite a bit. Definitely recommended for your watch list if you like the other Paradise shows.

The Reluctant Traveler — What We’re Watching

My updated iPad came with three months of AppleTV, so we are sampling some of the shows. We watched a couple of episodes of "The Reluctant Traveler" with Eugene Levy this weekend. They were very enjoyable. Expect we will watch several more episodes during our trial.

Elementary

Elementary — What We Are Watching

Our latest streaming watch is Elementary. This is a contemporary twist on the Sherlock Holmes character set in New York City. We don't watch many shows produced by American television networks, but we decided to try this one. We are just about through the first season and enjoying it so far.

Dark Winds

Dark Winds — What We Are Watching

Our latest watch is the AMC series "Dark Winds". A bunch of the AMC series we have wanted to watch just became available. Set in the 1970s, the show follows two Navajo police officers as they investigate a series of crimes that occur on the Navajo reservation. We just finished the first season and are watching the second. Definitely recommended for your watch list.

Shōgun was a Disappointment

Shōgun was a Disappointment

My wife and I recently finished the FX series Shōgun. The launch publicity and industry hype all promised a memorable viewing experience. Unfortunately, we came away disappointed.

Shōgun on FX

Shōgun — What We Are Watching

We had watched the first episode of Shōgun on FX when it was first released last month. We enjoyed it, but some other things got in the way and we just got back to it this week. The storyline, characters, and setting were all pretty well done. Looks like a solid "watch list" recommendation so far.

Shetland Season 8

Shetland Season 8 — What We’re Watching

Our latest watch was the first episode of Season 8 of Shetland. Ashley Jansen replaces Douglas Henshall as the main character in the show. He was such a central part of the show, that we think you almost have to view this as a "new" show. Time will tell.

Return to Me

Return To Me — What We Are Watching

Teresa and I wanted a little break from the angst and pandering that seems to dominate the streaming channels. We decided to rewatch the movie "Return to Me". We really appreciated the movie's emotional depth, old-fashioned charm and gentle humor.

The Pope's Exorcist

The Pope’s Exorcist — What We are Watching

Our latest watch on Netflix was The Pope's Exorcist starring Russell Crowe. I am usually not a fan of "horror" films, but Teresa likes them so we will occasionally slip one into our steaming choices. This film received "medium" reviews, but we both like Crowe so we decided to watch.
