IPOP (IP-over-P2P) is an open-source virtual network overlay that lets you create self-configuring VPNs without relying on a central gateway. It encapsulates IP traffic over secure, peer-to-peer tunnels so machines behind NATs and firewalls can communicate as if they were on the same LAN. Designed for flexibility and scale, IPOP is useful for connecting desktops, servers, VMs, and containers across homes, campuses, data centers, and multiple clouds.

Highlights:

  • Decentralized VPN: peers connect directly, reducing single points of failure.
  • Virtual IP overlay (TUN/TAP) for IPv4 and IPv6 networking.
  • Automatic NAT traversal using ICE/STUN/TURN and encrypted tunnels.
  • Pluggable control/signaling (e.g., XMPP-based controllers) for peer discovery.
  • Modes for different trust models, such as friend-to-friend (SocialVPN) and group overlays (GroupVPN).
  • Cross-platform support, commonly Linux and Windows, suitable for cloud and container environments.

Typical uses:

  • Building private, ad hoc networks for collaborators without exposing services to the public internet.
  • Multi-cloud application networking and workload mobility.
  • Research, testing, and IoT scenarios that need secure, routable overlays across diverse networks.

Note: Specific features and platform support can vary by release; consult the project’s documentation for the latest details.

IPOP is developed by zicom. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 1.0 and 15.1. The name of the program executable file is IPOP.exe.
