Wayfinders brings together new and recent works by several mid-career women artists working in Edmonton. In their respective practices the artists in this exhibition locate themselves within their own realities and map out varying ways in which to navigate the world. This personal cartography grounds and locates each artist within diverse interwoven networks, material explorations and conceptual structures. Expansive notions of community, knowledge, family, ancestry, and storytelling coalesce to reveal intersecting yet independent points of view. The exhibition is organized into several intimate conversations between artists that explore themes of balance, family, health, location, navigation, and folklore. Each individual artwork serves as a point of orientation, coming together to form a shared map of contact, counterpoints, and complex constellations. These conversations blend into one another, representing the many concerns of women artists working in Edmonton today.

The art technicians of Alberta’s post secondaries step out of their supporting roles to reveal their own rigorous studio practices, demonstrating that the stewards of the classroom are also the masters of the craft. Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery invites you to consider your own “big questions” about death as you explore natural and cultural responses to life’s inevitable conclusion. Through artifacts, specimens, interactives, and immersive media experiences, you’ll discover amazing animal adaptations used for survival and learn how various cultures commemorate life.

Nahanni McKay’s photograph Spirit critiques the colonial foundations of Canada’s national park system and its ongoing impact on Indigenous lands and wildlife. A young Métis photographer from Banff, McKay works within a wildlife corridor, arranging the skulls of deer, cougars, and bears to honour their presence and the lives taken within these contested spaces. Through this evocative composition, she calls attention to how tourism and park policy have long overshadowed Indigenous relationships to land, while affirming the necessity of Indigenous knowledge in restoring balance, care, and respect for the beings who share these territories.
