Research Liveaboard Expeditions in Indonesia
About Indo Ocean Expeditions
Ready to join a research liveaboard trip, deploy BRUVs, conduct fish and benthic surveys, and explore the most remote regions of Indonesia? Indo Ocean Project partners with liveaboard operators to run exciting expeditions to Indonesia’s wildest and most inaccessible destinations.
Our expeditions are open to both Indo Ocean Project graduates and the general diving public. Certain hands-on research activities are reserved for IOP graduates, while other projects welcome all qualified divers to participate. IOP graduates take on an active role as marine researchers, applying the field skills gained during their Divemaster and Research Diver courses.
Each trip is led by Indo Ocean Project team members alongside experienced local guides, with several engaging talks led by our onboard marine biologist. These expeditions contribute to rapid assessments of understudied and underserved regions of Indonesia — areas where data is most lacking and valuable. Between surveys, enjoy epic dives and adventures onboard with a community of ocean-loving peers.
Nerds on tour!

The Halmahera Crossing expedition is all about building baseline data in some of Indonesia’s least studied regions. By joining, you’ll become part of the research team — helping create rapid reef assessments that can be used for future comparative studies and conservation planning.
Together we’ll deploy BRUVS, conduct roving fish surveys, and collect benthic and water quality samples across remote and understudied sites. Every participant contributes directly to the science, with co-authorship on any resulting reports or publications.
The Itinerary
Liveaboard routes are flexible and adapt to weather and sea conditions, ensuring we dive the best sites available. Here’s a look at the general itinerary:
Day 1-3 – Sorong to Misool in Raja Ampat National Park
Jump onboard for a check-out dive before heading south to Misool’s towering limestone cliffs and turquoise lagoons. Explore hidden bays, visit Love Lagoon viewpoint and Baby Shark Beach, and enjoy a night dive among the reef’s nocturnal life.
Day 4-7 – West Halmahera
Next stop is West Halmahera, where calm bays and crystal-clear waters reveal vibrant coral gardens, dramatic reef slopes, and an abundance of schooling fish. The area’s warm currents bring exceptional visibility and diverse marine life, making each dive a colorful experience. Between dives, we’ll visit a fisherman village in the Mufari area, stroll through a coconut plantation on Tifure, and relax on pristine beaches surrounded by swaying palms and turquoise seas.
Day 8-10 Lembeh Straight
The last stop of our journey takes us to Lembeh Strait, famed for its extraordinary muck diving and rare critter encounters. Explore black-sand slopes and sheltered bays by day, then enjoy a night dive to discover the strait’s fascinating nocturnal life. We’ll end the voyage in Bitung, North Sulawesi, with memories of unique marine treasures and stunning seascapes.

Research Goals
The North Komodo Expedition focuses on expanding ecological monitoring throughout one of Indonesia’s most famous yet data-deficient national parks. By joining, you’ll become part of the research team — contributing to rapid reef assessments that support long-term conservation and management of this high-traffic marine area.
Across two consecutive expeditions following the same route, each will target different research sites to maximize coverage across the park. Together we’ll deploy BRUVS, conduct roving fish surveys, and collect benthic and water quality samples at key dive locations. Every participant plays an active role in the science and receives co-authorship credit on any resulting reports or publications.
The Itinerary

Experience the wild currents and rich marine life that make Komodo famous. Drift through The Cauldron, meet swirling schools at Castle and Crystal Rock, and watch for passing reef sharks and mantas. On land, trek across Rinca Island to see the legendary Komodo dragons up close before returning to the sea for more exploration.
Day 5–6 – Iconic Sites & Farewell
Finish strong with dives at Batu Bolong and Tatawa Besar, two of Komodo’s most celebrated sites teeming with life. After your final dives, unwind on deck, enjoy shared meals and stories, and toast to an unforgettable week of adventure and discovery in the heart of Komodo National Park.

Getting there
Your Banda Sea adventure begins at Alor Island Airport (ARD – Mali Airport). To reach Alor, you’ll need to connect through Kupang, and as flights are not available daily, advance planning is essential. Many guests choose to arrive a day early to avoid tight connections.
At the end of the expedition, you’ll disembark in Ambon with departures from Pattimura Airport (AMQ). Ambon is well-connected, with daily flights to major Indonesian hubs including Jakarta, Bali, and Makassar — making onward travel much easier to plan.
Research Goals
The Banda Sea Crossing expedition is focused on building a baseline database for future expeditions while carrying out rapid assessments in this globally significant hammerhead hotspot. By joining, you become part of the research team and help collect data that can inform conservation and future comparative studies.
Our surveys will focus on elasmobranchs, deploying BRUVS and conducting roving fish counts at key hammerhead aggregation sites, alongside benthic and water quality sampling. Every participant contributes directly to the science, with co-authorship on any resulting reports or publications.
The Itinerary
Liveaboard expeditions are always shaped by weather and sea conditions, and the Banda Sea is no exception. Flexibility allows us to choose the best sites for the conditions at hand, but here is the general idea of what to expect:
Days 1–4: Alor and Crossing
Board the boat in Alor and settle in with a check dive before heading out for your first hammerhead attempt. Explore Alor’s dramatic volcanic slopes and vibrant reefs before beginning the crossing toward the Forgotten Islands, with a stop at Pulau Nyata for possible encounters with silvertips and reef sharks.
Days 5–9: The Forgotten Islands
This is where the hammerhead hunt truly begins. We will focus on the region’s legendary sites, including Nils Desperandum, where morning dives offer the chance to witness large schools of hammerheads along with other pelagics. Remote reefs, pristine walls, and little-visited atolls make this stretch a highlight of the expedition.
Days 10–13: Banda Neira and Crossing to Ambon
Arrive in Banda Neira, rich with both history and marine life, where diving can bring everything from mandarin fish to schooling barracuda. After exploring the Banda Islands, we continue toward Ambon for disembarkation.
Optional Days 14–15: Ambon Muck Diving
Stay on in Ambon with our partners at Laha Divepackers to experience the world-famous muck diving of Ambon Bay. Search for rare and bizarre macro life, including the endemic psychedelic frogfish and the elusive paddleflap rhinopias. A highly recommended add-on for macro lovers.
Extra Activities
The Banda Sea is not only rich underwater but also full of culture and history above the surface. Along the way, we’ll stop for unique experiences that bring you closer to the islands, their people, and their stories.
-
Village Crocodile Encounter – Visit a remote village where a locally loved saltwater crocodile roams freely from sunrise to sunset.
-
Traditional Fishing Village – Step ashore at the gateway to the Forgotten Islands and learn about traditional fishing practices that have supported these communities for generations.
-
Banda Neira Historical Tour – Explore the 17th-century Fort Belgica, wander through the heart of the old nutmeg trade, and visit the local museum. For those keen to linger, an optional dinner inside the fort is available for a truly memorable evening.
