Mission

advancing quality
& collaboration

ICETE advances quality and collaboration in global theological education to strengthen and accompany the church in its mission.

ICETE is a global community, sponsored by seven regional associations of theological schools, to enable international interaction and collaboration among all those concerned for the enhancement of evangelical theological education worldwide.

ICETE Vision Objectives

Quality

Develop, disseminate, mutually validate, harmonize, and inspire quality in theological education, aimed at fostering reciprocal trust among stakeholders, including the church.

Connections

Cultivate worldwide relationships, stimulated through gatherings, communications for reflection, interactive dialogue, collaboration, and practice in support of the church’s mission.

Impact

Supporting the Church’s mission through integrating quality in theological education and worldwide connections to bring about lasting change.

History

ICETE’s origins are rooted in the emergence of networks of evangelical theological schools in the majority world during the late 1960s and early 1970s. From among these new associations came a call for some means by which they might be in regular contact and collaboration at the international level. The WEA Theological Commission agreed to sponsor the project, and ICETE was formed in March 1980.

In the years since its founding ICETE has become the established forum for dialogue and cooperation among evangelical theological educators internationally. ICETE has also taken a leading role in fostering renewal and excellence in evangelical theological education globally. ICETE’s membership now covers all major regions of the world. ICETE’s past International Directors were: Paul Bowers (1980-82); Robert Youngblood (1983-88); Roger Kemp (1989-97); Dieumeme Noelliste (2000-06); Paul Sanders (2006-2012), Riad Kassis  (2013-2019).

NEXT for Theological Education

C-25 engaged a pivotal theological education journey to strengthen Christ’s Church in its mission. We considered and responded to current realities and anticipated challenges faced by churches through joining and commissioning ICETE Impact Teams. Nearly 640 people from 83 countries joined a ground-up approach to identify and engage practically with issues essential to equipping God’s people for greater long-term impact through churches everywhere. C-25 provided the venue to shape what’s “Next for Theological Education,” but now it is up to you to step up, step in, and move forward together for the sake of the Church.

Theological
Education

Theological education is the intentional and communal process toward knowledge of the triune God of the Bible that forms and equips to faithfully serve the mission of the Church. Within ICETE, this process is recognized and fostered across formal, non-formal, and informal expressions of learning that serve the global Church.

Formal Theological Education

Formal theological education is structured learning at various levels that leads to a qualification within an educational framework and is quality assured by relevant authorities.

Non-Formal Theological Education

Non-formal theological education is structured learning at various levels that does not lead directly to a qualification within an educational framework and is not necessarily quality assured by relevant authorities.

Informal Theological Education

Informal theological education is unstructured learning at various levels that does not lead directly to a qualification within an educational framework and is not necessarily quality assured by relevant authorities.
