who we are
The International Association for Spelling as Communication, aka I-ASC (pronounced “I-ask”), is a global organization of individuals from the nonspeaking and neurodivergent community. We seek to make spelling and the relevant supports accessible to every person who is unable to use speech as a reliable means of communication, regardless of geography, age, socio-economic or educational status. Through resources, programs, education, and events, I-ASC endeavors to create a consistent foundation of standards, best practices, and data that are quickly becoming the cornerstone for expertise in the nonspeaking community. Insurance coverage and wide availability are essential to ensure access to communication for all nonspeaking people. Therefore, I-ASC is committed to setting the standards of best practices to ensure communicative agency and autonomy for all nonspeakers.
Communication is a fundamental right. I-ASC is committed to removing barriers for all nonspeakers. We support all forms of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) with a focus on methods of spelling and typing. I-ASC currently offers Practitioner training in the methodology of Spelling to Communicate, also known as S2C™; however, we welcome nonspeakers who use any form of AAC.

To share our day with our loved ones to communicate our joys, fears, or just our basic daily needs is something most of us take for granted. For those with motor-sensory differences, which affect their ability to use speech as a primary means of communication, these small endeavors are a monumental hurdle to overcome. Effective communication has changed that for many nonspeakers around the world.
Nonspeaking individuals with sensory-motor differences have long been underestimated and misunderstood, leaving them in a world of silence and frustration. Everyone has a voice, whether by speaking, writing, typing, or pointing to communicate. Speech does not equal intelligence. Elizabeth Vosseller, SLP, the founder and Executive Director of I-ASC, has worked with individuals with complex communication and sensory-motor differences since 1995. In 2015, she developed Spelling to Communicate (S2C)™ as a method with clear protocols, processes, and procedures for spelled communication that is replicable, reliable, responsible, and researchable. In 2019 Elizabeth founded I-ASC to ensure ALL nonspeaking individuals have access to communication through training, education, advocacy, and research. I-ASC works to establish and advance a greater understanding of the capabilities of nonspeaking, minimally, and unreliably speaking people.

The I-ASC Spellers & Allies Advocacy Network is a group of spellers and allies who advocate together around issues that concern nonspeaking people. We seek to make real change for all nonspeaking people through public education and advocacy campaigns. The Spellers & Allies Advocacy Network welcomes adults above the age of 18.
