About House of Ruth Maryland

House of Ruth Maryland is a nationally recognized leader in the fight to end intimate partner violence (IPV). In the United States, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men will experience IPV in their lifetimes. Confronting these numbers and ending IPV is two-fold at House of Ruth Maryland. Our work includes both comprehensive services for survivors to rebuild their lives safely, and prevention of future harm through education and abuse intervention.

Wraparound services like rapid re-housing, shelter, free legal aid, counseling, childcare and job navigation, among others, ensure survivors have the support they need to begin their greatest journey yet: healing. IPV training opportunities, both in-person with our Community Advocates and virtually through our learning platform, Salus, equip community members, practitioners and organizations to better recognize and respond to IPV. Our Abuse Intervention Program, the Gateway Project, holds those who use abuse accountable in their actions while teaching a peaceful path forward.

These services combine their impact to ensure one day, all Marylanders will feel safe in their own homes.

I love being affiliated with the House of Ruth; whenever I (proudly) tell someone where I work, their eyebrows shoot up, their eyes widen, and they smile and nod. While that part feels wonderfully validating, I am first and foremost intrinsically motivated to effect positive social change, and in the role that I have, I can and do. I find that there is great value in being able to support clients in developing/enhancing their social support systems. It is so very special to partake of the moment when a survivor realizes that they are not alone, whether that’s through them gaining community through group sessions, or them realizing that they have access to resources at HRM they might otherwise not have been able to access.

Testimonials – Sheila Hameen (Photo)

I worked here 24 years ago which feels like full circle. This job is the most rewarding position that I have had in my career… I’ve helped employees and our clients in their circumstances where they needed help and guidance… I feel so blessed to have also become a role model for the team here at House of Ruth to make everyone feel special. This is my home away from home.

Testimonials – Therese Dunscomb (Photo)

I find deep value in my role every day, knowing that I am able to help contribute to safe, positive, and empowering experiences for survivors of intimate partner violence. It is a privilege to be a small part of a survivors’ journey toward safety and healing after leaving abuse, and I am proud to be part of a team that fosters a welcoming and supportive environment. This work has shaped me both personally and professionally over the years. It has deepened my empathy, strengthened my patience, and taught me the power of listening. I value the perspective I gain each day by witnessing the resilience and courage of the people we serve. Some of the most meaningful moments come when survivors reach out years later to share their continued safety, independence, and accomplishments—powerful reminders of the long-term impact of this work and the cycles of violence we help break.

One of the best decisions I made in my life was completing their program. You learn a lot about yourself and in different situations and how to look at them from other perspectives, and that’s not the half. Most importantly learning to take accountability hit home for me.

A meaningful part of my job is witnessing the generosity of the community in supporting our clients. Every donated item represents a step toward safety, stability, and dignity for someone struggling with Intimate Partner Violence.

I like the way that everyone was inclusive and even introducing a new way to understand domestic violence.

I have participated in House of Ruth Maryland’s exceptional trainings for almost 20 years and am always impressed by the depth of their expertise and analysis.
