MENOPAUSE

SYMPTOMS, CAUSES, TREATMENT OPTIONS, AND PREVENTION

What is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a person’s menstrual cycles and fertility, usually occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. It happens when the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, causing changes in hormone levels that affect multiple body systems.

Mild changes in menstrual patterns or occasional hot flashes can be normal. But clinical menopause symptoms may include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, and mood changes. These symptoms can make daily life, work, sleep, intimacy, and overall well-being more challenging for some people.

Menopause is not a disease or a sign of weakness. It is a natural stage of life, and with the right support, symptoms can be managed effectively. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle, body weight, health conditions, and stress can influence the timing and severity of menopause. Understanding the changes and recognising early symptoms is the first step toward maintaining health and comfort during this transition.

Stages of Menopause

Each stage has different hormonal patterns and symptom profiles.

1. Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, often starting in the 40s. Hormone levels fluctuate, causing changes in menstrual cycles, hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disruption. Some people also notice mood changes, irritability, or difficulty concentrating.

2. Menopause

Menopause is officially diagnosed when a person has not had a period for 12 consecutive months. Hormone production from the ovaries decreases significantly. Common symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary changes, and reduced fertility. Sleep disturbances and fatigue are also frequent.

3. Postmenopause

Postmenopause is the stage after menopause. Symptoms like hot flashes may reduce over time, but low estrogen levels can increase the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and urinary tract changes. Ongoing monitoring and healthy lifestyle choices are important during this phase.

Common Symptoms of Menopause

Menopause affects each person differently. Symptoms often show up in three main areas: physical, urogenital, and cognitive/psychological changes. Some people experience only a few symptoms, while others experience several simultaneously. Severity varies depending on hormonal changes, lifestyle, and overall health.

Physical Symptoms

These are the most obvious and often the first signs:

  • Hot flashes or sudden feelings of warmth
  • Night sweats that disrupt sleep
  • Irregular or skipped periods
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Changes in hair or skin texture
  • Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
  • Joint stiffness or muscle aches
  • Headaches or migraines triggered by hormonal changes

Urogenital Symptoms

Reduced estrogen affects the urinary and reproductive systems:

  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during intercourse
  • Urinary urgency or increased frequency
  • Higher risk of urinary tract infections
  • Decreased libido
  • Pelvic floor weakening leading to mild incontinence

Cognitive & Psychological Symptoms

Hormonal changes can influence mood, memory, and mental clarity:

  • Mood swings or irritability
  • Anxiety or low mood
  • Trouble concentrating or brain fog
  • Sleep disturbances and insomnia
  • Feeling overwhelmed or less motivated
  • Emotional sensitivity during stress

Risk Factors

You may be more at risk of severe menopause symptoms if:

  • You have a family history of early or severe menopause
  • You have had the surgical removal of your ovaries
  • You smoke or have poor lifestyle habits
  • You have chronic health conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders
  • You experience high stress or poor sleep
  • You have low physical activity levels
  • You are overweight or underweight
  • You had chemotherapy or radiation treatments
  • You have limited social support during this life stage

Treatment and Management Options for Menopause

Menopause can be managed effectively with the right strategies. At HelloGP, care is personalized based on symptoms, lifestyle, and health priorities.

Lifestyle and Supportive Strategies

Even though menopause is natural, supportive approaches help manage symptoms:

  • Keeping a regular sleep routine
  • Practising stress management and relaxation techniques
  • Regular physical activity (strength, flexibility, and cardio)
  • A healthy diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein
  • Maintaining hydration
  • Avoiding triggers for hot flashes (caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods)
  • Mindfulness or cognitive behavioural techniques to manage mood

Hormone Therapy (HRT)

Hormone replacement therapy may be recommended for those with significant symptoms. It replaces estrogen (and sometimes progesterone) to relieve hot flashes, night sweats, and urogenital symptoms. HRT plans are tailored and monitored by a GP.

Non-Hormonal Medications

If HRT is not suitable, other options may help:

  • Low-dose antidepressants for mood or hot flashes
  • Vaginal estrogen for dryness or urinary symptoms
  • Medications for bone health (osteoporosis prevention)
  • Sleep aids or relaxation supplements, as appropriate

Telehealth Support

HelloGP offers telehealth appointments for ongoing monitoring, medication adjustments, and lifestyle guidance. This is particularly helpful for busy individuals or those unable to visit the clinic regularly.
