Friending policy: I use this LJ primarily as a personal journal, which means I like to keep my flist small and composed mostly of people I know really well, for the sake of privacy. If we've met in real life or we have mutual friends, there's a good chance I'll friend you back. If I have no idea who you are, comment here and let me know how you found me -- I'll check out your LJ, and may friend you back, but I can't make any guarantees. All fic and most fannish babble is public, so feel free to friend me regardless if that's what you're here for. And, as always, feel free to defriend me at any time -- I won't be offended.

Here is a list of every fic I have ever written. Fics marked with a (D) (for "drabble") are under 500 words in length, and asterisks (*) are next to the stories that I'm particularly proud of. The newest fics are at the top of each fandom list. Some are very old and embarrassing, but with the exception of one RPS fic that I don't like to talk about and is under lock and key, this is every completed thing I've posted to the internet.

Lots of links under the cutCollapse )

I promised more Teen Wolf recs, so here they are! The first section I have here is for WIPs. I've discovered in this fandom (the first fandom I've been in for awhile that features a large amount of frequently-updated WIPs) that I really, truly love following stories serially. This shouldn't be a surprise -- I'm a comics fan, after all -- but it's nice to remind myself. The risk of a fic never being finished, for me, is better than the intimidation caused by trying to read a long fic that's already been finished. High word counts are scary. But if I read in tiny doses, I can trick my brain, and seeing an update hit my inbox always makes me squee (thank you, AO3 subscriptions!). Below are some fics I'm currently enjoying.

WIP Teen Wolf recsCollapse )

The second category of recs here is lady-centric recs -- fics about Allison, Lydia, and/or Erica. I promised resolute and likeadeuce that I would make this list, and I finally put it together. It's shorter than I'd like it to be -- I really should read more fic about the ladies of this fandom -- and it's skewed toward Lydia and Allison, because I tend to prefer season 1 characters and don't really care about any of the three betas, Erica included. But she does make one or two appearances! Lots of femslash in here, too.

And that's it! If you have something to rec me, I encourage it -- I'm reading a LOT of fic lately, and I'm always hungry for more.

I have a habit of picking up fic bingo cards and then never doing them, so there are no guarantees with any of this, but I have both a Cotton Candy Bingo and a Trope Bingo card, so I figured I'd post them and see if anyone wants to talk ideas. Since I want to start and finish (and post) stories this year, perhaps short bingo-y things are a place to start!

Fandoms are totally open, so suggest away! Current/most recent fandoms are Teen Wolf, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Marvel, but I'm up for anything. :)

As promised, this is a post full of Teen Wolf fic recs. I have not included WIPs, and I'm saving any fic written for/because of me for a second, special round. But since I've fallen headfirst into this fandom, I figured I might as well spread the love.

A lot of the recs are Sterek fic -- I'm not really a Sterek shipper per se, but that's the overwhelming majority of the fic out there, and I'm easily persuaded when the writing is good. I'll rec the Sterek stuff first, and then put other pairings below that.

Dear Yuleperson,

First of all, I'm sorry this letter has been delayed a few days! I'm in the northeast and Sandy has messed with my access and senses. But all is well now, and I'm super-happy to start thinking about Yuletide. I hope you like your assignment even half as much as I like mine!

I'm going to copy and paste my general notes from last year, because they still apply:

I firmly believe that Yuletide is a writer's game. We all get thousands of stories to read, but we only get one to write (usually). Write what makes YOU happy, first and foremost, and that will make ME happy.

If you clicked on this post, though, chances are you want some idea of what I'm interested in, so I'll provide a few details. I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to fiction. I'm primarily a boyslasher, but I also love genfic and het and femslash and OT3s and all sorts of things. I love well-researched fics with a lot of attention to historical or geographical detail, though that isn't always necessary. I love slash that delves into the nitty-gritty day-to-day experiences of being LGBT, especially in past historical periods. I like angst and fluff about equally, and though I don't read much classic hurt-comfort, I like both hurt and comfort when they service a story. I love, love, love character studies, or studies of a relationship (romantic, platonic, or familial) between two or three characters (you may notice this is a particularly strong theme in this year's requests). I love futurefic and pastfic and fill-in-the-blanks fic within the confines of a story. I love unrequited love and irrational devotion and sacrifice and complicated love quadrangles. I love personal revelations and coming-of-age stories and musings on identity. I love kidfic (both characters-having-kids and stories about characters when they were kids). I don't write plotty epics, but I respect the hell out of people who can pull them off. I can enjoy fic from G to NC-17 -- porn is fine and can be great but isn't necessary. For a better idea of my tastes, feel free to check out my fic, though I've never written in these fandoms.

A few things I don't like include humiliation and dramatic irony (wacky misunderstandings and the like), sexual relationships with huge power differentials (teacher/student, parent/child, big age gaps where the characters first met when one was a child and the other a teen/adult, any mentor/mentee dynamic), and racism, sexism, and homophobia (unless they're a product of a historical era or interrogated within the text). I'm also not a huge fan of AUs -- I like the "what if?" variety, but "they're all space pirates!" isn't usually my cup of tea. But if that's what you desperately want to write, I won't complain -- I've certainly seen it done well, and I trust your writerly instincts!

For request-specific stuff, we'll take this below a cut:

This is my day of completing ancient memes. In that spirit, I finally answered all the requests at that curtainfic meme from December.

The second meme I completed is that letter meme that was going around awhile ago. I'll post it here, because I'm happy to give a letter to anyone who wants one:

1. Leave a comment to this post!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from any media.

For my first letter, D, from likeadeuce, I challenged myself to talk about only those characters with double-barreled D names.

Daredevil, Dum Dum Dugan, Dr. Doom, Don Draper, Dewey DuckCollapse )

For my second letter, R, from second_batgirl, I didn't have such a clever idea, but I did manage to restrict myself to only characters whose first names start with R, rather than last names.

Roger Davis, Riza Hawkeye, Rachel (Animorphs), Rue (Hunger Games), River TamCollapse )

Tomorrow (or Friday): belated music memes!

Hi, flist! Now that the semester is over, there is a whole backlog of fannish posts I want to make. This is the first of those.

First of all, I've thrown my hat into the ring for Reverse Remix, where I volunteer to participate and you tell me which fic of yours you'd like me to remix. I've already written one fic, Save Tonight (The Puppy Pile Remix), which is a remix of likeadeuce's FMA fic before they turn the summer into dust. But I'd be happy to write more! My comment is here.

With that out of the way, I wanted to do a bit of a recs post. I haven't been reading nearly as much fanfic lately as I used to, but I've read some awesome stuff lately, all by my friends, and you should all be pointed in their direction because their stories are GREAT.

On the Fullmetal Alchemist train, I want to rec four recent fics by likeadeuce. For values of "recent" that include basically "the last six months."

FMA RecsCollapse )

Next up, a Hunger Games rec: Strategy, by second_batgirl. I haven't read any Hunger Games fic before, because it's not the kind of canon that gives me fic cravings, but TSB has written a beautiful exploration of Foxface in this story. It makes sense to me that the canon doesn't give us all that much information on the other tributes -- if it did, no one would be able to make it through the books due to CRUSHING DESPAIR. But that's one of the things fic is for, and TSB does a fantastic job of giving Foxface a backstory, a family, hopes and dreams, and an inner monologue that stretches from the Reaping to her sad end. The fic gave me a new appreciation for a character I barely remembered from the book, and the psychological depth TSB gave her made me read her actions in a whole new light. I highly recommend this.

While I'm doing more brief recs, I'll add a fanvid rec: Sky is Open, a Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel) vid by garrideb. If I'm being honest, I have never liked vids composed of comics scans. They've always seemed too static to me, too awkward, with word balloons distracting from the lyrics and no sense of forward momentum. But I can't say any of those things about Garrideb's vid. It's about flying, and Carol Danvers' love of that act, and the vid feels like it's flying. The pacing and timing are incredible, and watching it just gives me SUCH a rush. If you like Carol at all, I highly, highly recommend this -- I know how much work she put into it, and the result is more than worth it.

Finally, I want to rec a fic universe: the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew fics by bethfrish. They're Carson Drew/Fenton Hardy slash, set in the first half of the 20th century, and I know the idea might seem out of left field at first. But bethfrish has created an intricate, beautiful universe that pays attention to historical context, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I've only read a handful of Nancy Drew books in my life, and I've never read a Hardy Boys book, but that doesn't matter. This universe is gorgeously-written and fully-realized, requires absolutely no canon knowledge, and, in its use of different media and formats as well as in the writing itself, it shows the full extent of bethfrish's brilliance. I urge EVERYONE to give this a shot, especially if you, like me, are fascinated by stories about queer people in early 20th century America. Details below the cut:

Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew recsCollapse )

And that, my friends, is it for now. More fannish posts to come!

Flist, let's not talk about my mental health of late. It's really best undiscussed. Instead, let's discuss the fact that I've recently become consumed by Downton Abbey.

I'm not entirely surprised that I love Downton. Awesome character dynamics, historical fiction, a vaguely Austen-like tone, pretty clothes -- what's not to like? Well, certainly some stuff -- there are definitely plot points I wasn't fond of. But overall I really like it. And a lot of my thoughts are VERY shallow, I'll confess.

The primary shallow thought is that Dan Steven is the prettiest man alive, and he conveniently plays Matthew Crawley, who is (I'm sure you'll all die of shock) my favorite character. I love Matthew for being an awkward turtle who doesn't really know how to socialize with people and winds up being a dick accidentally when he's being well-meaning. Dan Stevens, meanwhile, is an absolutely ridiculous human being who loves books so much he somehow got to be a judge of the Man Booker Prize, started his own pretentious online literary magazine with some friends, and considers the representative of a baby-proof bookcase company to be one of his favorite twitter accounts.

Luckily for me, Dan Stevens also starred in the three-hour BBC adaptation of The Line of Beauty, a book I was already reading when I started watching Downton. Now I have EXTRA incentive to finish the book so I can watch the mini. Because this book involves Dan's character having a lot of gay sex. I have already cheated and watched fanvids of his character paired with two different dudes. Want to see Matthew Crawley making out with/having sex with other boys? Click those links!

Like I said, I'm shallow. And every British actor under 35 has done a gay movie at some point. The world is a wonderful place.

Speaking of gay movies (albeit a much less literary and probably much less GOOD one), I also Netflixed Cowboys and Angels, Allen Leech's requisite gay movie. I am not quite as in love with the character of Branson as likeadeuce is, but I do like him, and I think Allen Leech is ALSO a ridiculous and adorable human being. I look forward to watching his terrible movie today or tomorrow.

On a final shallow note, everyone on this show is incredibly pretty, but among the girls I'm constantly struck by Jessica Brown Findlay as Lady Sybil. I've become aware recently of the icky political issues surrounding straight girls using the phrase "girl crush," so I'll just say that if I had to make a list of women I would sleep with, she would be on it. Seriously, so pretty..

I was going to do a cut tag with spoilery thoughts on Downton, but this entry is getting long already and I have things to do, so they will have to wait until later. Feel free to chat at me about it in the comments, though -- I just finished up with the Christmas special yesterday, so I have plenty of thoughts. And there may be fic in the future, though I'm not sure anyone will actually read "5 Times Matthew Crawley was Hugged By His Awesome Mom."

Hey, flist. I am currently at a Panera with likeadeuce, who I am visiting. We are both theoretically writing, but she is having more success than I am. I can't seem to decide what to work on, and it all seems really intimidating, original fiction and fanfic alike. Any encouragement in one direction or another would be appreciated! In the meantime, here, have some Roy/Hughes snuggling without context that I did manage to write today:

~*~

They lay together on the narrow mattress endemic to military school dorms; even Roy's abundant charm hadn't been able to conjure up a bigger bed. But they didn't need much space, pressed together as they were, Roy's body curled to fit into the contours of Maes' lanky frame. Their knees were pressed together, bent at obtuse angles, Maes' feet sticking out several inches past Roy's. Above, Maes had wrapped one arm securely around Roy's waist, his hand tucked up under Roy's shirt and splayed across his warm belly. Roy's own arms were pulled close, one tucked under his head while the other made a loose fist against his chest that flexed whenever Maes kissed his neck. And Maes was intent on kissing his neck, deliberately and methodically, letting the sharp ends of Roy's glossy hair tickle his nose.

Maes leaned in closer, nibbling against Roy's earlobe, feeling the little spasms of pleasure in Roy's stomach through the skin of his palm. He sighed happily into Roy's ear. "You know exactly how gorgeous you are, don't you?"

Maes felt the muscles in Roy's jaw adjust into a smile. "Of course I do. But I'm always happy to hear it."

Maes laughed, nipping at Roy's ear again, and snuggled even closer.
