Looks like this is not used anymore in the new design? can we remove it?

Remove the API itself, or remove the suggestion in the doc? I'm assuming the doc since otherwise it's a breaking change.

If we're 100% sure we want to get rid of this, we could mark it FLUTTER_DEPRECATED but we'd want a nice message that points people at the migration path.

Agreed this is kind of a gross API (particularly the self assignment), but it's what we have until everyone's off.

I think this comment accurately describes the current situation so will merge but if it's been decided that the path forward is for everyone to migrate to the UISceneDelegate approach, then I think it makes sense to put together a plan to deprecate and eventually remove this.

Thanks for the code pointer! Since it's not mentioned in the migration guide, I doubt anyone actually use this API (I could be wrong). But to be safe, i agree we may wanna start with FLUTTER_DEPRECATED. This is out of scope for this PR. I commented just to double check.
