Ah, turns out that this is supposed to work, which wasn't tested but justifies some of the original implementation complexity: overide({ foo: { bar: 1 } }, { "foo.bar": 2 })

This module has several dependencies that really aren't necessary for how simple it could be. These dependencies are causing an issue in #64852 and rather than finding some really well placed mock I'd really just like to make this module more self-sufficient and remove some code.
For reviewers perplexed by the way git decided to describe renames:
