In addition to the comments, would you mind changing the type of EditorState's selection property to reflect that it might be undefined? This will help surface this case in future code as well.

Once areSelectionsStatesEqual() has been given the correct parameter types these casts can be removed.

Make EditorState.selection optional in awareness types. Remove the initial undefined-guard from areSelectionsStatesEqual and drop the corresponding tests that asserted behavior for undefined arguments to align tests with the updated type/logic.

Consolidate and simplify areEditorStatesEqual tests in post-editor-awareness.ts. Hoist the jest callback to beforeEach, add an emitUpdate() helper to remove duplicated change event emission, and merge/simplify cases to verify no notifications are emitted when editorState is unchanged (both with and without a selection). Removed an older redundant/edge-case test about undefined vs { selection: undefined } for clarity.

The
EditorStateTypeScript interface declaresselection: SelectionStateasrequired, but awareness state arrives over the Yjs awareness protocol from remote
clients — it is untrusted data that can have any shape at runtime. When
editorStateis a truthy object like{}or{ selection: undefined }, theexisting falsy guard passes and
areSelectionsStatesEqual(undefined, undefined)iscalled, which crashes on property access.
This can be triggered by:
editorStatebefore the selectionhas been computed (race during initial connection)
setThrottledLocalStateFieldreplaying stale statecaptured before
selectionwas seteditorStateHow?
Two minimal null guards, one at each layer:
areEditorStatesEqualinpost-editor-awareness.ts— guard againststate.selectionbeingundefinedbefore passing it toareSelectionsStatesEqual.areSelectionsStatesEqualincrdt-user-selections.ts— defense-in-depthguard since this is an exported function that can receive untrusted input from other
call sites.
This happens when blocks implement methods that replace or delete blocks.
