PROTECT
Georgia RiversGeorgia rivers are the source of life in our state.
Clean flowing rivers provide drinking water, powerful rivers provide energy, and healthy waterways sustain our ecosystems and draw us to connect with nature.
Georgia Rivers protects rivers through science and advocacy to ensure all rivers are clean, healthy and safe to swim. Our mission is to keep rivers open for public recreation, ensure the responsible use of water resources, and provide a clean water legacy for future generations. We unite river protectors and provide leadership for the Georgia Water Coalition, Okefenokee Protection Alliance, and Georgia Outdoor Recreation Coalition as the fiscal sponsor. We are Georgia DNR’s non-profit partner coordinating the Georgia Water Trails Network.
Protect the Okefenokee
The Okefenokee Swamp, the largest blackwater wetland and home to the largest National Wildlife Refuge east of the Mississippi, is threatened by a proposed mine on Okefenokee’s Trail Ridge.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warns that mining would destroy the structural integrity of Trail Ridge, dewater wetlands in the swamp and induce drought, and put adjacent private property and timber lands at greater risk of wildfire.
Georgia Rivers is dedicated to garnering national attention on this priority issue and urging Georgia leaders to prioritize the protection of this irreplaceable natural resource.
Protect the Freedom to Float
Georgia’s lawmakers are studying the definition of navigable streams in Georgia. Georgia Rivers is urging lawmakers to preserve existing recreational river uses and protect the public’s ability to float down even the state’s small streams.
Learn how you can take action to protect the freedom to float on any Georgia river or stream that is capable of floating a boat.
