April Carnival May 4, 2010

This is Dylan and I’m going to talk about what happened at the carnival. Well, for instance, some of the games were sometimes complicated. There’s Cooking Club which served snow cones. There’s Minute To Win It, which I believe is based on the game show on channel 11 for DirecTV and channel three for the other satellites. There’s also Knock em’ Down in which you throw a tennis ball and try to knock down the bottles (If you knock all the bottles down, you get 2 prizes). As usual, we always have a relay-type race, so we got the Trash-Compost-Recycle relay since it needs to be related to Earth Day. This is what the mystery was, a jumper (WHAT!!). Although it wasn’t what I nearly thought of (I thought the mystery booth was the dunking booth), it’s okay.

Reflection: Ice Skating Field Trip! April 27, 2010

Last Tuesday, April 27, 2010, Galing Bata/F.E.C went Ice-skating at Yerba Buena. The girls were in the rink for the whole time, which was like 2 hours. I only went around the rink for only 5 times. Jalon was going really fast while I was eating licorice. Justine was trying to do some stunts. I actually bought some food in the vending machine. There were some other machines such as a coffee machine, this pushing game, gravity hill–which is out of order– and an arcade machine with Metal Slug 3.
I actually bought Sprite Zero, two nacho cheese flavored Doritos, and a pack of licorice. Jalon also fell and looked like he’s been flipped. When I was in the rink, every time I passed where the other people were, Ron just cheered me on. Pretty much it was a blast, even though I was the first one to get out of the rink.

THE APRIL CARNIVAL
This Friday, on April 30, 2010 there will be a carnival. It will be held at Bessie Carmichael, FEC Middle School campus. It will start at 4:00 PM and end at 5:30 PM. The theme is going to be about Earth Day, and our booths are going to be celebrating this event. We are going to have cooking club, where students get to make their own healthy pizza. There are also going to be games like “Knock ‘Em Down.” Where we knock down recycled bottles. There is also going to be a relay race, where students have to sort trash into the right bin. There is also going to be “Minute to win it.” Where you have to stack recyclable cups in a minute. Lastly, there is going to be a mystery booth. It is a surprise for the students. We think it is a snow cone machine. Mark thinks it’s fireworks that will burn down the whole school. Amihan thinks it’s a dunking booth, where a staff member sits above water and a student tries to hit the target so the person falls in the icy cold water. You are more than welcome to join us, In this marvelous carnival.

Galing Bata is so fun and exciting. I’ve only been going for two weeks at Galing Bata and I’m already having fun. I joined Galing Bata because sometimes when I get home I have no time to do my homework. The reason is I’m also on the track team and I go home at 5:30. Here I could do my homework while having fun.
I’m looking forward to going to a museum so I could see and learn prehistoric things. I’m also looking forward on learning a lot of stuff here. I wish all of those would come true. I know that I’m only new but I’ll score Galing Bata 10 out of 10. I like Galing Bata cause they’re all nice to me.
I think I’m going to stick with Galing Bata until 8th grade. When I went here the first time I was so happy. That was one of my happiest days. I promise that I’ll always listen to whatever they’ll tell me to do. Galing Bata is the best after school program ever.
Shadow Day Review April 10, 2010

March 19, 2010, was when Galing Bata students from 3rd grade-8th grade went to U.C Berkeley. This was my 3rd time coming to U.C Berkeley.
We played volleyball with Ates and Kuyas, and it was really fun! The 4th graders joined, too. Afterwards, we were taught how to dance Tinikling, even though some of us already learned it. Most of my friends were having a hard time. They go too fast in fear of having their feet get caught by the bamboo. Suddenly, Jalon and I started to have a Tinikling Battle! I won, so I got three tickets for the raffle at the end of the day, where we win various prizes. I earned 6 tickets, but Jalon ended up with 11 at the end of the day. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any prizes—but at least the day was fun!

This is Asterlee, Chelsea, Mark and Hillary reporting for the Galing Bata Chronicles, and we just got word from Kuya Gil about March 19’s Shadow Day at U.C. Berkeley:
“For the past five years, the Youth Mentorship Program has worked with FEC Galing Bata to hold an annual FEC Shadow Day on the UC Berkeley campus. This is typically a day long event in which the Galing Bata students learn from their Ate’s and Kuya’s about the Cal campus and a little bit about the college life. In light of the recent statewide protests against the budget cuts that are threatening the quality of public education, FEC Shadow Day has probably never been more relevant as it is now. The event will inspire and motivate the Galing Bata students, their families, and their Ate’s and Kuya’s to pursue higher education.
This year, Shadow Day will be filled with fun games, awesome entertainment, and great food! And there will be amazing surprises for those who come! Oski the Bear will be waiting for you…”
We look forward to seeing our Ate’s and Kuya’s next Friday, and we hope to have more fun than last year!
Sincerely,

Galing Bata prepares for the state-wide Budget Cuts Rally on March 4th, Thursday, and encourages students and parents to walk-out.
Ate Princess Bustos talks to Galing Bata correspondents about the rally on Thursday, and how their parents can get involved.
According to Ate Princess, the cut will be $113 million dollars for San Francisco alone, and right now, 900 pink slips have been sent to teachers.
She is concerned that if the budget cuts happen, Galing Bata will be in danger of getting cut, which means the students will no longer have a safe place to go, and get help with homework.
Parents can help keep this from happening by get involved, and attending the meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, March 2nd, starting at 3pm at the Bessie Carmichael Library.
There will be free childcare provided, and parents are encouraged to bring food and drinks to share.
“We don’t deserve to pay for other people’s irresponsibility that made this economic crisis,” Ate Princess said. “All kids regardless of race, gender, or class deserve a good quality education.”

Zodiac Tales February 25, 2010

Last year in celebration of Chinese New Year, the 4th and 5th grade class welcomed the year of the Ox with an afternoon performance.
Two weeks before the event the students read aloud the story of how the animals were chosen for the Chinese Zodiac. This is only one version of several legends, but using this as their inspiration, I asked the students to create a story using the animals we had just read about. They were to write an original story, one that they can act out. They made their own costumes. They wrote their own scripts. They directed their own skits. They produced one amazing show.
Their Inspiration. Chinese Zodiac Story:
Check out clips of last year’s tales:
