San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant “Near Miss” Incident

. . . “As workers were lowering a 49-ton thin-walled 17-foot tall canister packed with high-burnup spent nuclear fuel, the canister got caught on the lip of a guiding ring, “hanging by about a quarter inch,” as OSHA inspector and whistleblower, David Fritch, told a stunned crowd at the end of a community meeting on August 9.”

Texas Nuke Plant Shuts Down After Overheating “Event”

3 11 2012

One of the two reactors at the Comanche Peak nuclear power plant near Glen Rose was shut down early Friday after a cooling pump overheated, the operator reported. According to an event report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Unit 1 was shut down manually at 1:42 a.m. because of “high temperature indications” in a motor bearing on one of four huge pumps that circulate cooling water around the reactor. An alarm that warns of an improper level of oil for the pump also sounded, the report stated. Dallas-based Luminant Generating, the plant’s operator, is “currently looking into a cause” of the pump problem . . . .

San Onofre Nuke Plant: Back-up Power Would Fail in Quake [!!!]

30 05 2012

Emergency supply could have been cut in event of quake

The troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant operated for three decades with equipment that could have temporarily cut off the plant’s emergency power supply in the event of an earthquake, government filings revealed Tuesday.

The disclosure by Southern California Edison about a possible backup power problem comes amid a probe into excessive wear on tubing that has sidelined the seaside plant for nearly four months. . .   (more)

Broken Down California Nuke Plant, San Onofre, Wants to Re-Start

16 05 2012

The LA Times has this:

Edison’s San Onofre plan could make things worse, consultant says

A consultant who has criticized Southern California Edison’s handling of the troubled San Onofre nuclear plant issued a report Tuesday saying the utility’s proposed solution for bringing the plant back online could make the issues worse.

The plant has been offline more than three months because of excessive wear in steam generator tubes that carry radioactive water. The wear appears to be occurring when the plant is running at full power and the rate of steam flows causes the tubes to vibrate and rub against each other and against support structures, Edison officials have said. . .  (more)

San Onofre Nuke Plant: 1,300+ Tubes Damaged

9 05 2012

Over 1,300 tubes damaged at ailing San Onofre reactors
By MICHAEL R. BLOOD

More than 1,300 tubes that carry radioactive water inside the San Onofre nuclear plant in Southern California are so damaged that they will be taken out of service, the utility that runs the plant said Tuesday.

The figures released by Southern California Edison are the latest disclosure in a probe of equipment problems that have kept the coastal plant sidelined for more than three months.

At issue has been the integrity of tubing that snakes through the plant’s four steam generators, which were installed in a multimillion-dollar makeover in 2009 and 2010. . .  (more)
