President Obama, Don’t Appoint a Fracking Proponent as Energy Secretary

10 02 2013

INFO + Petition —

President Obama is considering naming Ernest Moniz, head of the oil and gas industry funded MIT Energy Initiative, as the next Energy Secretary. Moniz is a proponent of using natural gas as a “bridge fuel” to renewable energy. But in reality, fracking for natural gas only prolongs our dependence on fossil fuels, while contributing to global climate change and polluting our scarce fresh water resources. According to an exclusive story by Reuters, Moniz “believes the water and air pollution risks associated with hydraulic fracturing, or ‘fracking’ were ‘challenging but manageable.’

US Shale Gas Bubble is Set to Burst

25 10 2012

From Oil Price .com –

[snip] . . . . No, shale gas won’t entirely go away anytime soon. But expectations of continuing low prices (which drive business plans in the power generation industry and climate strategies in mainstream environmental organizations) are about to be dashed. And notions that the U.S. will become a major gas exporter, or that we will convert millions of cars and trucks to run on gas, now ring hollow.

One matter remains unclear: what’s the energy return on the energy invested (EROEI) in producing “fracked” shale gas? There’s still no reliable study. If the figure turns out to be anything like that of tight “fracked” oil from the North Dakota Bakken (6:1 or less, according to one estimate), then shale gas production will continue only as long as it can be subsidized by higher-EROEI conventional gas and oil. . . .

Blue Daze Exposes Fracking Danger to Dams

4 10 2012

Fracking a nuclear plant in the Barnett Shale

The Army Corps of Engineers wrote a letter in February recommending a 3000 foot setback from dams to prevent a “catastrophic event.” Mysteriously, the Corps later issued another letter that was less alarming but still emphasized the unknowns and possible danger of fracking near dams. . . . France bans fracking citing irreversible pollution

6 09 2012

“Hydraulic fracturing is and will remain banned and currently it’s the only way to produce shale gas,” Batho said today. “Debate is now centered on a technology that doesn’t exist right now to my knowledge. A new technique hasn’t yet been demonstrated.”

BREAKING: 7.0 Quake Hits Southern Japan + Man-Made 4.0 Fracking Quake in Ohio

1 01 2012

Powerful Earthquake Rocks Japan

No tsunami warning from it.

It hit about 300 miles south of Tokyo.

Fukushima Diary adds: water leakage at reactor4

Though the connection with this earthquake is not clear, Tepco announced water is leaking from the cooling system of spent fuel pool in reactor 4.

UPDATE Jan. 3

Reactor 4 seems affected by the quake.  EX-SKF has a lot about the water level going down.

Now Unit 4 appears to be leaning

Large rubbish fire and lots of smoke from new places on the Live Cam today

and ….

they admit this one is man-made –

4.0 earthquake strikes in US

McDONALD, Ohio (AP) — Officials said Saturday they believe the latest earthquake activity in northeast Ohio is related to the injection of wastewater into the ground near a fault line, creating enough pressure to cause seismic activity.

The brine wastewater comes from drilling operations that use the so-called fracking process to extract gas from underground shale. . . .  (more)

EPA links fracking to tainted water

By JENNIFER A. DLOUHY

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday linked hydraulic fracturing with groundwater contamination in Wyoming — a first-of-its-kind conclusion by the federal agency that could trigger new scrutiny of the practice used to extract oil and natural gas nationwide. . .  (more)
