Mostly reading

I’m doing a somewhat lazy entry as once again there are no new wildlife programmes on terrestrial TV next week. However have a look at the superb photos on this site.

I didn’t realise that it’s and I work in a bookshop! Anyway the website is a lot of fun as you’ll see.

If you’re looking for something to read then Fantastic Fiction and Lovereading are two good book sites that I often browse through.

I’ve seen similar sites to Goodreads but it does appear to be one of the better ones of its kind. It certainly has a good name and is well laid out.

Happy reading, and have a good weekend !

  1. Hi Flighty, the bloggers will love your links to the book sites. I love written English, but funnily enough, I don’t spend time reading books, such as novels. I shall be mentioning this fact in a blog post of my own very soon. I would love to work in a bookshop, as I love to collect books, to collect dust, on my bookshelves. I love reference books, especially on gardening, and I love books with great illustrations, now they come off the shelves often. x

  2. I think I had heard about it being “the year of reading” this year – vaguely – but I don’t remember seeing anything really big and promotional for it; I wonder if it’s a case of too many “weeks of/days of/months of” and almost becoming … immune to the words “national [something] [time period]” and just blanking it out.
I’ll have a look at those sites a little later (hopefully this afternoon if I get a break); although I’ve a whole host of books I’ve said “I’ll read that” and haven’t even managed to pick up yet – I’ll get there though – although I might be 12 months behind everyone else 🙂
It looks to be a beautiful day here (so far) hope it’s the same there – either way, have a good one

  3. Year of reading – I didn’t know either! But Becca has pointed me in the direction of Benjamin Black books and I’m just starting his second (audiobook, that is).

  4. Louise that’s good to hear! I used to have a BookBuffs blog where this would have been an ideal entry. I couldn’t give the attention I wanted so gave it up.
I’m an avid reader but not a great collector of books, keeping just a couple of dozen mostly poetry and reference books on the shelf.
Everybody says that they’d like to work in a bookshop! There’s always plenty of dust so a prime requirement is to be a dab hand with a feather duster! xx

  5. Mas hello! I think that you’re right about there being too many of these events. That being so we do tend to tune them out don’t we.
I wouldn’t worry about being behind everyone else. As far as I’m concerned I read what I want when I want!
It’s been a sunny and warm day here, so I spent an enjoyably busy morning on the plot. Cheers!

  6. Nikki I’m not surprised as I think that it’s a UK event!
I read, and enjoyed Christine Falls, but actually gave up on The Silver Swan although I may well try again later on.
I still much prefer books to audio. xx

  7. Love reading is a great and well used site! I do enjoy it alot. I never knew it was National Year of Reading! If it isn’t celebrated by Google then chances are I won’t know about it…
only joking. I’m still reading like a demon at the moment. I’m reading The Old Wives’ Tale by Arnold Bennett which is very good!

  8. Daffy I agree and it’s well used by you and me both!
Perhaps it will get more publicity later on in the year.
Good for you! I’m the opposite having slowed right up. That’s an excellent book. xx

  9. BB’s style of story telling took a little getting used to (probably because I’m listening and not reading) and I did almost give up on Christine Falls. Haven’t started Silver Swan yet. Being a visual learner, I prefer books as well, but the audio format lets me do chores and “read” at the same time – plus, it’s a lot less expensive and takes up no extra space!

  10. Nothing like curling up with a good book! I’ve always enjoyed reading and am a frequent visitor to our local library, which can also be accessed online for ordering or renewing books. I had a look at the comprehensive and impressive National Year of Reading website you linked to. Actually, I have just finished watching a program entitled “Demystifying Dyslexia”, so I was particularly interested in seeing how the site approached that aspect of literacy. The program I watched was quite enlightening, showing the struggles of people who learned differently, and which strategies were helpful. ..

  11. Glo I quite agree! Me too, and one of my earliest memories is of going to the library with my mum and older sister.
It’s a good site which I had another look at last night.
I know a few people, including a long time blog friend, who have dyslexia. I appreciate just how much of a struggle it can be for them. xx

  12. Hi Flighty! Your entry about the National Year Of Reading is very useful. Some months ago I searched for titles in English on Internet and it was a hard work for me. My hubby’s sister was coming back home from England and she bought a lot of English books for me. Thankfully I have good English dictionaries and a great English teacher. And a comfortable hammock. lol Hugs, my friend.

  13. Lady Drid hello! That’s nice to know. Don’t tell anyone but I use a good English dictionary as my spelling isn’t as good as it should be! The hammock sounds like a good idea but I think I prefer the sofa.
    Take care and hugs. xx

  15. Donna okay! I really do like it here, despite a few minor niggles recently.
Keep the other one just in case, Daffy and I both have dormant blogs over there.
I’ll change you on the Lawn Loungers list! xx

  16. Ah,`the well known ploy of filling comments up by yourself eh? Hey, Flighty, got the link from Donna. But I can’t get to your blog now much from Beijing, because wordpress is one of the tough ones to get to from here – it gets blocked quite often when people post inflammatory stuff about politics in China. So do blogger, typepad, and vox. I stay with P27 cos it is smaller and doesn’t attract attention like that, and anyway with rss feeds people can always read it from their homepages. (hint) Hope to see you soon! Oh, and check out http://www.platform27.co.uk/Windmillstreet for an update on other stuff.

I appreciate the particular problems that you have when blogging.
I do regularly stop by and read your entries although I don’t comment very often!
    Have a good weekend! Cheers!

  21. Here again– seven years after “The Year of Reading”! I follow Goodreads but am new to the Lovereading site. There are so many books piled up beside my bed, but this January 2015, I have finished two — one: ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr, which takes place in Germany and France in WWII, is wonderful.

    1. Liz I’m on Goodreads but it’s been ages since I looked at Lovereading. I like to keep plenty of to be read books, especially at this time of year. I’ve made a note of that book and will look out for it. xx
