Family Support

Many families feel isolated when they are raising children and youth who have experienced trauma. It can be heart breaking when you are not sure where to turn for help. Finally Home’s Family Support team provides coaching, education, and connection for foster, adoptive, and kinship families. We also help families research additional specialized resources for their unique needs.

Why is This Program So Important?

Mental health diagnoses are more common in foster/adopt/kinship households. It can be very difficult in the middle of a crisis, or challenging trauma-based behavior to reach out for help, or even to know where to start. We want to make this simple: start with us!

We want to be a support system for families so they can support their child during these critical times.

These difficult situations can also be a heavy weight on the caregivers’ mental health and relationships. Our whole family-systems approach allows us to support any, and all members of a family with wrap-around support.

Here is how the process works:

Step 1

It all starts with a simple phone call or email to Finally Home – or a completed “Family Support Interest” Form (see link below).

Step 2

Families meet with a member of our Family Support Team to share about what’s going on in their family and what support they might need. As our team learns more about the family’s story, it allows us to research our network of partners and providers to see who would be a helpful resource for the family. At times, we may find it helpful to call providers on behalf of the family, which saves the family from having to relive the trauma over and over again through the re-telling of their story.

Step 3

Our Family Support Team presents a plan of ideas to the families that could include anything from free access to our online learning platform(Resilient Roots), assistance with researching mental health care providers, connecting them to other agencies in the area, and even providing our option for financial support as needed. We work diligently to create an individualized plan with full wraparound support for any, or all members of the family.

Step 4

Families continue to work side-by-side with our team to work their plan. This includes regular phone calls, family support emails, and more. No two plans are the same, just like no two families are the same. Additionally, we live out our belief in a family-systems approach and are able to offer support for any member of the family.

What makes this program unique is that we approach each family individually. Each plan is created specifically for the family we are working with to ensure they get the support they uniquely need.

What are Revive and Thrive Mental Health Scholarships?

Once a family has engaged with the Family Support Team and has identified a specific treatment, they may request financial assistance to cover some of the services. This process is detailed and includes:

  • the completion of an Application by the family
  • submitting a request to our approval committee
  • researching opportunities for financial partnerships
  • confirming the authenticity of the mental health provider
  • assessing our current funds
  • working with the mental health providers to set up our payment plan directly to the providers

This program is funded through donors and grants and are dispersed based on the availability of funds. Funds may also be restricted to families within a certain geographical region as designated by the funding organization.

For each family, we also work to build a coalition of funders. This coalition of funders includes the family themselves, a contribution from Finally Home, discounts from the providers, donations from the family’s church or organizations they’re involved with, and a fundraising page they can utilize to share with friends and family.
