Name Changes

Changing your legal name in the State of Michigan

For many trans and non-binary people, having legal identification that reflects their correct name and gender is not only affirming, but essential for their psychological well-being, safety, and access to services.

If you are a Michigan resident and would like to change your legal name to something representative of your gender identity, advocates from Equality Michigan can help walk you through the process. For some qualifying individuals, Equality Michigan’s Name Change Program can assist with the financial and procedural barriers associated with legally changing one’s name. If you are currently experiencing bullying, harassment, or abuse due to your legal name, you may be eligible for financial assistance through Equality Michigan.
