Community Education

Group trainings tailored to your needs. Now offering CE credits!

Equality Michigan’s Community Education Program provides essential training on LGBTQ+ issues and cultural competency to individuals, organizations, and businesses across Michigan. Our goal is to foster inclusive, affirming environments that promote safety and equity for LGBTQ+ people. We believe educating our community helps to address institutional and systemic discrimination against LGBTQ+ and HIV-positive communities.

Please see below for information on our different types of trainings that we offer. We are proud to offer Continuing Education (CE) credits for select trainings, making it easier for professionals to earn credentials while advancing LGBTQ+ equality. To request an EQMI training, please review the training descriptions and fill out the form below, or email training@equalitymi.org.

LGBTQ+ 101 (or equivalent knowledge of LGBTQ+ topics) is a required foundation for this training.

This 2-hour training is designed to be the next step in LGBTQ+ competency after our LGBTQ+ 101 training. LGBTQ+ 201 is focused on bridging the gap between knowing the basics of LGBTQ+ topics and understanding how to put those ideas into practice. This training consists of multiple activities and discussions that are designed to help participants understand how to be LGBTQ+ inclusive and competent in real-life situations.

Participants will learn about:

– Comprehensive LGBTQ+ terminology

Identifying gendered language

Practicing with pronouns

LGBTQ+ history

Minority stress and intersectionality

How to find and create support networks

LGBTQ+ 101 (or equivalent knowledge of LGBTQ+ topics) is a required foundation for this training. Both presentations can be taught in the same training session if adequate time is allowed.

Did you know that transgender people are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual intimate partner violence than the general population? The LGBTQ+ community often experiences domestic and intimate partner violence at greater rates than the general public. How does DV/IPV impact LGBTQ+ people differently than straight and cisgender people? What are the unique barriers that LGBTQ+ survivors might experience? This 1.5-2 hour presentation answers these questions and gives context on how to help this population.

Participants will learn about:

– How DV/IPV is experienced differently by members of the LGBTQ+ community

– Barriers faced by LGBTQ+ survivors

– Common myths surrounding LGBTQ+ DV/IPV

– Steps your agency can and should take to become LGBTQ+ inclusive

LGBTQ+ 101 (or equivalent knowledge of LGBTQ+ topics) is a recommended foundation for this training. Both presentations can be taught in the same training session if adequate time is allowed.

Race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, ability. These are just a few identities that make up who we are as people. How do these identities impact each person differently? How might someone with two different intersecting minority identities experience the world differently than someone who has only one minority identity? This 1.5-2 hour presentation delves into these topics and leaves attendees with an understanding of how to incorporate all LGBTQ+ individuals into their allyship and activism.

Did you know that more than 1 in 5 LGBTQ+ adults reported postponing or avoiding medical care in the past year due to disrespect or discrimination by a healthcare provider? LGBTQ+ individuals often have negative experiences and associations with healthcare, including with primary care, specialty care, and mental health care. This puts many LGBTQ+ individuals at an increased risk for health disparities. This 1.5-2 hour presentation gives more information about what LGBTQ+ individuals’ interactions with the healthcare system may look like.

Participants will learn about:

– Basic LGBTQ+ terminology

– Common LGBTQ+ healthcare experiences

– How to create a safe space

– Things to keep in mind when treating LGBTQ+ clients/patients.

Did you know that LGBTQ+ adults are at least 2x as likely as the general population to have experienced homelessness in their lifetime? Unique risk factors may put LGBTQ+ individuals in this vulnerable state. This 1-1.5 hour presentation gives participants a better understanding of how homelessness and LGBTQ+ identities intersect and impact one another.

Participants will learn about:

– General homelessness statistics

– Risk factors for LGBTQ+ individuals

– LGBTQ+ homelessness statistics

– Barriers to services for LGBTQ+ people experiencing homelessness

Ways to help on the policy, organizational, and individual levels

Equality Michigan is Michigan’s premiere LGBTQ+ anti-violence and political advocacy organization, but what does our work look like? Learn more about what we do on a day-to-day basis and how you can help us get one step closer to equality for all. This presentation is approximately 1 hour long.

The LGBTQ+ community is ever-evolving and so are our presentations! Please let us know if there is a topic not listed above that you would like us to present about. We are happy to adjust presentations or create new presentations to fit your organization’s needs!
