I warmly welcome all to department of English, GUB. The department is highly committed to imparting time-befitting quality English education of an international standard. As we all know, English language and literature have been very prestigious and front line areas of study globally for a long time that provided excellent  employment opportunities in multiple sectors including different cadre services, (for example, foreign service, education, Admin, Customs, Police and others), banks, print and electronic media, corporate sector, multinational companies, and foreign embassies, among others. The curriculum of the department covers  English language skills, linguistics, literature (British, American, African-Caribbean, Continental,  South Asian and literatures in English, and in English  translation), literary theory, cultural studies, translation studies, history, philosophy, ethics’, soft (ICT) skills, and professional life skills to prepare students for managing the challenges  of the time and beyond.

The Department has an excellent (15 –member) faculty strength with a mixture of senior, mid-level and junior teachers, with experiences ranging from 2/3 years to above 40 years., and with higher degree/s from home and abroad.   The department maintains a ‘learner and learning friendly’ environment in and around the classrooms. The classrooms have multimedia and internet connectivity; all the students are provided with internet facilities on the campus. The learning opportunities provided are of an international standard. Students are encouraged to do research which is very much needed in the present world. The toppers are required to do a dissertation/thesis, and the others have to do a research project and internship. In the recent past, our students participated in research paper presentation competitions in different universities and won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in different times.  Students publish their research works jointly with teachers. A translation magazine is published by the department to encourage students to publish their course works (of the ‘Translation Studies’ Course).

The department encourages and facilitates different club activities for an all-round growth of students. The English club of the Department organizes activities like staging English drama, English poetry recitation, debating, extempore, and set speech competitions, among others. There are other clubs also in the university to help students cultivate their hidden talents and flourish.  The department also has mentorship program; student mentors are appointed to help students with their different academic and other needs and problems under the guidance of a senior teacher. There is also a career counselling and development center which organizes job fairs and help students with internship and job placement. For constant quality enhancement, we work in close collaboration with renowned faculty members of English from leading public and private universities of the country like Dhaka, Jahangirnagar, Rajshahi, Kushtia, BRAC, IUB, ULAB, East West, and Daffodil. National and international Seminars, symposiums and conferences are held frequently for quality enhancement. Guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) are closely followed for ensuring quality of its curriculum, teaching-learning and testing. Our graduates are working with good reputation in different professional sectors.
