Our work

Basic Education

We focus on creating opportunities for children and enabling them to shape their futures with confidence. Edukans works towards providing education that equips children with the skills they need to participate in a rapidly changing world. These range from reading and writing to social, emotional and digital skills. All children have the basic human right to quality education. It is the foundation on which they develop confidence and acquire knowledge, understanding, and social and academic skills. We believe in the power of quality basic education to enable children to develop, and ultimately to contribute to a better world.

Mission

We pursue future-proof quality education through a collective effort focusing on a safe learning environment, quality trained teachers for effective learning, dedicated school management, and home-support from parents and the community.

The challenge

Globally, literacy rates have gone up, school enrolment rates have risen, and dropout rates have fallen over the past decades. Despite increased enrolments, an estimated 263 million children do not attend school or quit school prematurely. This situation may be aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides this, many children cannot read, write or count sufficiently, whether they have attended school or not. This is primarily due to large classes, a lack of learning resources, and often insufficient teacher training and support. Poorly educated children are more likely to face a future of unemployment and therefore to remain trapped in a cycle of poverty. This ‘global learning crisis’ leads to a huge loss of talented young people for developing countries.

Definition

Basic Education

The entire range of educational activities, taking place in various settings, that aim to meet basic learning needs. Basic education comprises primary education (the first stage of formal education) and lower secondary education (the second stage). It also covers a wide variety of non-formal and informal public and private activities intended to meet the basic learning needs of people of all ages. It is the foundation for further levels and types of education and training and for life-long learning.
