A haunting murder and kidnapping on the outskirts of Salem, Massachusetts, sends two people with unique talents hunting for answers from both the past and present in internationally bestselling author Heather Graham’s electrifying new Krewe of Hunters spin off for fans of Stephen King, Jayne Ann Krentz, Riley Sager, and Simone St. James.

Skye McMahon sees things. Good and bad, the past unreels in her mind’s eye like a movie. Such is Skye’s uncanny life. That’s why she’s been summoned by Special Supervisory paranormal investigators Jackson and Angela Crowe, to help solve a mystifying murder and kidnapping on the outskirts of historic Salem.

Alicia Bolton discovered her grandfather-in-law murdered, her nanny and her young son have both vanished without a trace, and her infant daughter was found terrified and crying in her playpen. Skye, partnered with the intriguing Zachary Erickson, a charmer with a psychic touch, is at first beset only by visions of Salem’s witch trials and the tragic, paranoia-fueled executions. Then she sets foot in the Boltons’ house.

What Skye sees is not another innocent from the 17th century swinging from a noose. What she sees is a bona fide crone, pointed hat and all, preying on the family like something from a children’s nightmarish fairy tale. And when another local woman and her daughter inexplicably vanish, Skye has a second vision—that same wicked witch creeping up on her new victims on a lonely Salem road. It’s impossible to believe. Yet Skye’s visions never lie.

As Skye and Zachary put their otherworldly abilities to use, and grow closer with each revelation, they’re lured into an ominous mystery enveloping Salem like a fog. Navigating suspects, whispers of a cult, and a sinister history that threatens to reignite in the present, with Zachary’s help, only Skye can see the way to find the missing—but first, she may have to dance with the devil himself.

My Thoughts

First, I would like to say thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I am happy that this is not the first book I have read by Heather Graham and I enjoyed this book as I enjoyed the other books of hers.

This was a short read for me and I would have ended it in a day if I only had this book to read. But I like to read more than one book at a time… First, this was set in Salem so obviously this will have something to do with the witch trials. Now Skye has this power that lets her see what happens in the past so obviously she will be able to see what happened in the time of the witch trials but thankfully see has a way not so see that far back into the past. Zach on the other had been Skye’s FBI partner who can touch object and see where the last person who touched it is and what they are doing at the given time. This power they used to help them find people and children who have been kidnapped in Salem. I enjoyed reading this story. It was such an easy read for me. I quite liked Skye and Zach so I liked following them while they tried to solve the case and I seeing the past in Skye’s eyes. It gave a nice depth to the book.

This book had the perfect amount of suspense and spookiness. It was addictive and a perfect start of the spin off the Krewe Hunter series. I would totally recommend this book if you love a nice mystery with some paranormal elements in between.

There was also some romance in this book which I did not expect but I quite enjoyed. I look forward to read more of this author!

BOOK REVIEW – Dracula by Bram Stroker

Led by philosopher and metaphysician Professor Van Helsing – Dracula’s most indomitable adversary – Harker, Mina, and a band of allies unite, determined to confront and destroy the Count before he can escape.

My Thoughts

**PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW WILL ALSO BE POSTED ON MY SECONDARY BLOG — ECHOS OF BOOKS  **

So, this book has been on my TBR list for a while now as I kept pushing this off to another day. I don’t normally read classics unless I am really in the mood for it. I do love how Kindle lets me listen to the audio when I am in the mood to listen instead of reading. I jumped between reading and listening so the syncing of Kindle & Audible is nice. I enjoyed listening to the audio and the narrating of the audio book was very good. It kept me quite entertained and not bored.

“No man knows till he has suffered from the night how sweet and dear to his heart and eye the morning can be.”
― Jonathan Harker’s Journal, Bram Stoker, Dracula

I always like to see what Vampire books there are to read even though I might not always read them, though this book was totally different than what I expected it would be like. This was nothing like the other vampire books that I usually read. This book is also written in letters and diary entries which threw me off at first, but I am glad I kept at it. The character development was nice but what I loved about this book was that the book was extremely exciting. There was so much drama and everything else you would expect from a horror story.

“Even if she be not harmed, her heart may fail her in so much and so many horrors; and hereafter she may suffer–both in waking, from her nerves, and in sleep, from her dreams.”
― Bram Stoker, Dracula

I quite liked this book and would happily read it again. I would always recommend this book to those who love reading a nice classic that is set as Gothic horror. I do recommend if you really want to get into the mood then you need to read it at night or when it is rainy or stormy weather. So yes, this book really deserved the 4-heart rating as this book was very dramatic, had an intriguing plot and the characters where quite likable and it was just a fun novel to read.

Scare Thee Well

Laurel Haven Witches Book 2

by ReGina Welling

Genre: Paranormal Women’s Fiction

Three hundred years ago, one witch had to live with her mistakes. Today, another might have to die for them.

Tansy Shackleton has spent her entire life carrying the guilt of her family’s legacy. If not for her ancestor’s mistake, good witches might not be trapped in the coastal town of Laurel Haven, Maine. But no matter how hard she tries to make amends, she can’t stop seeing the stain on her soul. Not even at the cost of her marriage.

Connor Shackleton has tried everything he can think of to get his wife to see that she’s not to blame for the unwitting actions of a long-dead witch. At his wit’s end and unable to watch Tansy work herself into the ground for something that wasn’t even her fault, he proposes they take a break for a few days, just to get some perspective.

He should have known Tansy would martyr both their happiness on the alter of guilt, but he didn’t. He wanted her back almost from the minute he walked away, but she’s shut him out of her life as firmly as the door she closed behind him.

The problem is, life and death in Laurel Haven go hand in hand for witches of the blood, and just like Tansy, Connor’s one of them. The only way to move forward is to turn and face the past head-on. Together with her new coven, Tansy will have to put all of Laurel Haven’s ghosts to rest or die trying.

My Thoughts

Okay so I’m back to the paranormal and horror. Now I can say this will be a short review. This book was okay. It was fast paced with a possessed apartment unit built on a former asylum. There was nothing scary or suspenseful. There could be so much potential when it comes to a haunted asylum.

“We must study the past if we’re to understand the present,”
― David Longhorn, Rookwood Asylum

As I said before it was an okay read, but I would have liked a bit more of everything. The ending felt a bit rushed for me and there was still a lot of questions that haven’t been answered. I found the story entertaining enough but I doubt that I will read the next instalment. There were a few times that I had to force myself to read more. Thankfully this was a quick read.

Keira is ready for her life to return to normal. Though, to be fair, normal is a tall ask when your ability to see ghosts has landed you the job of groundskeeper in a small town’s cemetery.

When Keira receives an invitation to dinner at Dane Crispin’s crumbling ancestral estate, she knows she can’t refuse. The last living descendant of the Crispin family is reclusive. Keira only met him once…on the night he tried to kill her.

The mansion is steeped in history that is equal parts complicated and bloody. Keira senses the presence of restless spirits the moment she steps through its door. And Dane, waiting for her inside, wants to ask for her help.

My Thoughts

*ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. *

I haven’t know this was the third installment in the series until after I requested this on Netgalley so obviously I had to go and read the first two before I even started reading this.  (Go check out my reviews for The Whispering Dead and The Ravenous Dead.)

I can once again say this can be read as a standalone. I would recommend you read the pervious books. I cannot help but laugh as I read all three books of this series in one day. From reading very little books on my free time to reading three books in one day is really funny. Lets hope I can keep this streak up. I can say if I cannot find anything that catches my fancy then I would go and reread some fanfiction.  Yess people I love reading fanfiction especially crossovers but anyway back to this review. Each book in the series just get better by each page and I think it is my favorite so far.

You have ghosts and romance. Though this romance is going at a snails pace but I don’t care because horror / paranormal mystery should not actually be about romance. I noticed that almost all of Darcy Coates books are cozy and quick reads. I like this because I find that I am struggling to keep reading any heavy books lately so I love all the cozy horror mystery that Darcy writes.  There was plenty of adventures and we found out more about the organization that’s after Keira and why they might be after her. We also found out why Mason left from studying to become a doctor and a bit more on Zoe as well.

This was such a gem to read and I would recommend it to all Horror lovers who loves reading about ghost stories.

Sometimes the dead hate the living too much to find peace.

As Keira struggles to uncover the tangled histories of some of the graveyard’s oldest denizens, danger seeps from the darkest edges of the forest. A vicious serial killer was interred among the trees decades before, his spirit twisted by his violent nature. He’s furious. Ravenous. And when Keira unwittingly answers his call, she may just seal her fate as his final intended victim.

My Thoughts

This is the second book in this series and I noticed that you can read this as a standalone but I personally would recommend that you read the first book of the series before you read this. It gives us more backstory about Keira and how she met Adage, Mason and Zoe.  I liked this book just a tiny bit more than the first novel. That is why this has a 4 star review. This story begins right where it left of from the first book.  There are multiple mysteries going on just like The Whispering Dead. Keira is still intend to find out more about herself but it feels like it is on the backburner.  She is so intent to find out the identity of the John Doe buried in the cemetery but there is a malevolent and angry ghost intend to consume all the energy of the ghost and people. The more energy it consumes the stronger it becomes.

Keira’s friends are both different. Zoe is so quirky and she has a lot of paranoid conspiracies. I just wish the back stories of both Mason and Zoe would be explored more. I would like to know why Mason left his studies for being a doctor.  Zoe is researching the insignia of the organization that is targeting Keira but yet again we wont find out anything about that in this novel.

There is a tiny bit of romance but I mean you have to squint for that. Mason’s care for Keira is seen but nothing happens to take further action in the romance part. Once again this novel could have been spookier but this is still a quick and fast read. I would like to call it a cozy read. Wish I could have read this laying comfy in my bed instead of listening to the audio while at work. I love seeing the trust starting to build between the three friends with Adage knowing about her gift with Keira being afraid to tell Mason and Zoe. Yet when they know they help even more than before.

Still I enjoyed this novel and I will always look at Darcy Coates books first if I am in the mood for Horror or ghost stories.

My Thoughts

So this is my first review for the year. If you haven’t noticed it has been a very long time since I actually made time to just read for fun. I decided to start with this novel because I received an ARC for the third book in this series and I wanted to read and review that book before it was released. I started with this because I wasn’t so sure if the books can be read as standalones or not.

Lately I am struggling to read anything but horror and mystery. Anyway back to the review 🙂 I struggled between 3 and 4 star for this but in the end I ended with a 3. Now here is some backstory. One of the main characters Keira found herself in the middle of the woods with no idea how she ended up there and why she has some injuries. Someone was hunting here. As she runs through the woods trying to find a place to escape to she comes across someone out in a cemetery who helps her.  Adage, a pastor, hides her from those who are hunting her.

After  they started chatting and learning that Keira has Amnesia, Adage decides to put her up in a guest cottage at the very back of the cemetery. That is until he can go to town to find out who she might be. As Keira started to settle in het temporary new home she found out that she has the gift of second sight as she can see ghosts. There is this one mystery ghost that has been murdered and Keira decided to investigate and find out why she hasn’t moved on. She gets the help from a shop keeper named Zoe and a local doctor intern named Mason that Adage asked to help Keira with her wounds. Keira sets out to find whatever she can for these restless spirits while trying to find out more about herself and why she ended up in such a small town as Blighty.

Now this story was an easy read. Yes it was very entertaining but it was light on the horror. I would have liked it a bit more if it was more spookier. It dragged a bit on certain parts but near the end the book has so much more suspense and tension. Now this is the first in the series so obviously you wont find out all the backstories of Keira and why she should try to hide from unknown people who have been hunting he. Hopefully we will find all that in the rest of the series.

I would easily read again as this is fast read and I do love ghost stories.
