Energy security: reducing Italy’s dependence on Qatari LNG

March 2026
Within twelve months, Italy could structurally replace over 85% of its demand for Qatari gas through renewables, energy efficiency and the electrification of consumption. For the remaining 15%, Italy could make use of existing import infrastructure, utilising spare capacity and capturing methane from flaring and venting, without resorting to new contracts or requiring further gas investment in infrastructure or new fields.

Crisis in the Strait of Hormuz: gas, energy prices and European strategic autonomy

March 2026
The US and Israeli attack on Iran, and the resulting blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, once again highlight Europe's structural vulnerability: its dependence on fossil fuel imports. This dependence exposes the Italian and European economies to geopolitical shocks with direct economic consequences. In this context, preserving and strengthening instruments such as the Green Deal is essential to safeguard European competitiveness and ensure greater strategic autonomy in the face of increasing instability in energy markets.

The state of gas: What infrastructure does Italy require?

February 2024
This analysis aims to identify the minimum gas infrastructure Italy requires to ensure national energy security, after the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have shaped the European market and considering the progress on climate targets. The study was carried out using an optimisation model that simulates the balance between gas demand and supply in the European market for Italy with a daily granularity for 2030, 2040, and 2050.

Policies for a decarbonised Italian electricity system in 2035

June 2023
The project aims to show the production technology, enabling technology and enabling policies required to comply with Italian energy regulations that an essentially decarbonised electricity system in 2035 will need to have in place in 2030 and 2035. The system will be the most economical of all those guaranteeing decarbonisation and security while complying with certain hypotheses.
