Please note that you do not need AutoCAD to be installed on your computer to analyze damaged files and preview their contents, so you can do this on any PC. You will only need AutoCAD for the final data export operation.
1. Selection of a damaged DWG file
The first step of the recovery process enables you to select a damaged DWG file you want to restore data from. This can be done in several ways. To select a damaged file, type its name and path into the input field located in the center of the program window or use the standard Windows open file dialog. You can also select one of the previously used files from the dropdown list that can be opened by clicking a small button with a downward arrow in the right part of the input field. Once you've entered the name of the file, you can proceed to the next step by clicking the Analyze button at the bottom of the window.
You can substantially speed up the file analysis stage by manually specifying the version of the DWG file the program will work with. This can be done by selecting a corresponding option in the Dwg Version menu. The following options are available in the current version of Recovery Toolbox for DWG:
- R2000 - used in AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD 2000i, AutoCAD 2002
- R2004 - used in AutoCAD 2004, AutoCAD 2005, AutoCAD 2006
- R2007 - used in AutoCAD 2007, AutoCAD 2008, AutoCAD 2009
- R2010 - used in AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD 2011
By default, the program used the Auto Detect option.
At this stage, the program performs the analysis of the structure of the damaged file and attempts to identify recoverable elements within it. Please note that the process may take considerable time depending on the size of the file being processed and the speed of your CPU.
At this stage, no menu items are active and you can only terminate the process and either go back to Step 1 (Cancel) or exit the program altogether by clicking Exit.
Since the analysis may take considerable time, you can minimize the program window to attend to other tasks. Once the process is over, the program will bring the recovery dialog back to the front of your desktop.
3. Overview of the repaired data
Once the analysis is over, you will see the content of your DWG file in the program window. Recovery Toolbox for DWG allows you to move and rotate the drawing, as well as zoom in and out using the keyboard and/or mouse buttons.
Below are keys and key combinations that can be used for manipulating the drawing:
- Press and hold the left mouse key to move, rotate and zoom depending on the selected mode.
- The right mouse button brings up a popup menu that lets you select one of the three available modes: Move, Rotate and Zoom.
- Plus (+) and minus (-) buttons are used for quick zooming.
- The mouse wheel can also be used for controlling the quick zoom function.
The View menu contains two additional options:
- Reset view - restores the original drawing display settings
- Lineweights - enables/disabled the display of line thickness values
To proceed to the next step of the recovery process, click Start recovery.
4. Selection of the AutoCAD installation to be used for opening the repaired file
Recovery Toolbox for DWG does not save repaired DWG files, but passes the repaired data to AutoCAD, which means that you must have AutoCAD installed on your computer at the time of recovery. If you don't have any AutoCAD versions installed, you will see a corresponding notification.
If, however, you have several versions of AutoCAD installed, the program will ask you to choose the one the recovered data will be sent to.
There is no strict requirement to select the exact same version of AutoCAD your file was created in. Note, however, that exporting a newer DWG file to an older version of AutoCAD may result in some properties or attributes getting lost. For instance, you won't be able to export a 32-bit true color value created in AutoCAD 2004 to AutoCAD 2000 - the original value will be lost and the program will replace it with its closest match.
Once you have selected the necessary version of AutoCAD and clicked Next, the program attempts to launch AutoCAD and pass the data to it. If this attempt fails for some reason, you will see a corresponding notification and will be prompted to select another version.
If you have only one installation of AutoCAD, the program will suggest checking its integrity.
5. Export of the repaired DWG data
If the software managed to start AutoCAD and connect to it, it immediately starts exporting the recovered data. You will see an AutoCAD window on your desktop. It is highly recommended NOT TO CLOSE, MINIMIZE, MAXIMIZE OR IN ANY OTHER WAY INTERACT WITH AUTOCAD during this process, since it may terminate the data export process. You will see objects appearing in the AutoCAD windows and will be able to track the overall process using the progress bar in Recovery Toolbox for DWG.
At the final stage of the process, the program shows a log file with detailed statistics on the actions performed and objects repaired, as well as any errors that may have occurred.
At this stage, you can either close the program by clicking Finish or go back to the file selection step and select another file using the Back button at the bottom of the program window.
Possible initialization errors
The corrupt Autocad recovey program initializes its graphics engine before starting the analysis of the file structure. If it fails to initialize the graphics subsystem, it will show a corresponding notification. In this case, we recommend immediately updating your video card drivers.

In the menu Tools-Options program options are separated into two parts: Recovery method and Additional. The Recovery method tab enables choosing from three available file recovery algorithms:
- Direct read. Direct file reading algorithm. This tries to find objects using tables and addresses from file headings. The quickest method, but very sensitive to errors.
- Recovery read. Recovery read for every DWG format version uses its own methods for searching objects in files. The method does not depend on tables or addresses. After all objects have been found in the file the program uses special algorithms to recover connections between objects.
- Recovery read + Direct read. Combined method. First recovery read is run, then the program searches for tables in files. If it finds tables, then it recovers a more accurate draft. If there is no table, then the result will be analogous to the Recovery Read option.
The Additional tab enables setting certain additional program parameters:
- Recover blocks without INSERTs. If this option is turned on, then for those blocks which do not have insertion points, new insertion points will be forcibly created. This option guarantees that all recovered blocks will appear on the draft. If this option is turned off, then only blocks for which corresponding insertion points were found in the file will appear on the draft. (Blocks, in this context are BLOCK type objects, and insertion points are INSERT type objects. Roughly speaking, if it is necessary to recover the maximum, then turn on this option.. If it is necessary just to recover the exact position of the blocks, without any extra rubbish, then turn off this option).
- Convert anonymous blocks to normal blocks. Autocad creates auxilliary anonymous blocks for displaying certain objects, such as dimension, hatch, etc. It is impossible to create such a block oneself. This option converts anonymous blocks found in the file into ordinary blocks, which makes it possible to recover them on draft. (Like the previous point, if you want to restore to a maximum, turn the option on. If you want to remove extra objects, turn off the option).
- Smart decompress. Use nonstandard algorithms to unpack data. These algorithms are significantly faster than usual ones, however, there is a small chance that they might miss some data in the file.

Convenient, especially when your home PC without AutoCAD. When I arrived at work, I already received a link to my repaired file, but I downloaded it from home at 9 pm, and received it only by the morning of 4 am.

I had a problem with the file. When I try to open it, I get a message that the file is invalid - "The drawing file requires recovery". Errors were found in the drawing. File cannot be opened without recovery. After recover file, managed to open file in AutoCAD 2002, not bad!
After the error "Drawing file is not valid" in AutoCAD, I decided to take advantage of the online recovery.
I upload the file, and in the preview, I saw an empty sheet, there was no data from the damaged DWG file.

Most of .dwg files was repaired. But not all files of AutoCAD can be repaired.
The preview in the tool work better then the preview in AutoCAD. Software work slow but it repaired lost objects.
Software restored only 95% of corrupted data in demo mode.
