The Winchesters are always on the road and dad's gone most of the time, leaving Dean to take care of him. Because they move around so much, Sam never has time to make friends and keep them. Dean is all he has in his life. That, and a butterfly knife in his pocket. Sam knows what his father does, and he's trained to do it too, but that doesn't mean he wants to.
More than anything, Sam just wants to be normal.
