Avengers and… Planeswalkers assemble? That’s right! Marvel fans who also play Magic: The Gathering intersect at quite a time in history! MTG and Marvel collaborate for more Universes Beyond crossovers with more cards than others released before it such as Doctor Who, Fallout, and Jurassic World while it has successes like Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings to compete with.

Most Universes Beyond crossover collaborations usually feature only one set of cards. The Marvel and MTG collaboration will see multiple expansions. I mean, come on, the superhero and tabletop gaming universes are so expansive that they’ll need far more than a couple of Secret Lair drops to cover everything.

So, what do we know about the Marvel and Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond crossover? Grab your Mjölnirs and counterspells for the ride of a lifetime into the Marvel and Magic collaboration.

How Many Marvel x Magic Sets Are There?

There are at least two full sets of Marvel x MTG crossovers. The first was Spider-Man released on September 26, 2025 and the Marvel Super Heroes set is scheduled for release in June 2026. One big detail is that the Marvel sets are limited to physical cards while Through the Omenpaths is the Universes Within, digital version for Magic Arena and Magic Online. Through the Omenpaths are mechanically identical cards of entire sets that get different art and names.

More to be announced on the release schedule. One more subset to mention here is Marvel Universe (MAR). The full card's of art is the source material with the Magic text of reprints on top.

Here’s what we have to go off of so far. We update this post with more details as they become available.

No cards or products are ready for the Marvel Super Heroes set. The legends and villains are still in production, so be prepared to suit up when official news arrives.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man was Magic's first Marvel crossover set, released right into Standard. It covers Spider-Man characters from all across a multiverse, and is complete with mayhem, web-slinging, and humans that transform into super heroes. It delivered some cool card designs and references to the comic book characters, and started a cycle of Infinity Stones.

Marvel's Spider-Man - Play Booster Box

To play Spidey in Standard Spider-Man play boosters are the way to go, and the full complement of products includes collector boosters, bundles, and a scene box.

With Marvel built into the Standard format, WotC dedicated some cards to support in advance. The range is wide as they pulled transform which originated in Innistrad, and planted hero tokens with the job select cards from Final Fantasy.

Marvel Magic Products

There are lots of individual sealed products that put Marvel Magic cards into your hands, here's a mere taste of what you can find:

Marvel's Spider-Man - Scene Box

Wizards of the Coast loves to feature sealed products that celebrate specific visuals from Universes Beyond properties like with Spidey's Sensational Showdown scene box. This includes six specific borderless cards with art that aligns to make a single cohesive image. The product includes three play boosters and textless art cards as well.

Marvel Secret Lairs

Though the initial sales of Marvel Secret Lairs last a short time, the secondary market is alive if you want to pick up your favorites.

Spider-Man: Daily Bugle Breaking News

What's a newspaper? The Daily Bugle's news cycle is slower than sorcery-speed by today's standards, but the newsprint treatment makes each card a sort of headliner. The all-important rules text on these cards fell below the fold, now if only we could get the throwback price of a daily newspaper from 1962 (about 7 cents).

Spider-Man: Heroic Deeds

Is it just me or is Ephemerate the only card shown here with a heroic deed?

Spider-Man: Mana Symbiote

There is some dark energy pouring out of these expensive-looking basic lands. I see it for Rakdos () and Dimir (), but Bant () and Selesnya () are jarring for their color combinations.

Spider-Man: Venom Unleashed (Colors)

Ah yes, the power of Venom. These look sick!

Spider-Man: Venom Unleashed (Inks)

Sap the color out of them and the Vemon Unleashed cards still look good. Something tells me these deserve matte sleeves rather than glossy.

Spider-Man: Villainous Plots

The villains are consistently more interesting than the heroes, and believe me, Draftsim mentions these cards plenty through out its articles. Truly some great Commander cards here.

Deadpool

WotC presented a Secret Lair that started off redacted by Deadpool on April 1, 2025 for April Pool's Day. The drops sold out quickly anyway and includes a really valuable reprint in Deadly Rollick. The one new card is Deadpool, Trading Card.

Marvel Super Drop

This drop landed with five brand new commanders, released before any full Marvel set on November 4, 2024. The mixed reaction was pretty widespread, some players love card versions of these characters, others were upset their order came in damaged, and the MSRP of $39.99 for the nonfoil drops and $49.99 for the foil drops became important points.

Why Magic and Marvel Together?

Web-Warriors | Illustration by Thanh Tuan

Web-Warriors | Illustration by Thanh Tuan

Magic and Marvel have a ton of potential together with powerful characters and epic battles. Much like Magic cards bend the games rules, super heroes bend the capability of each individual and represent imaginative ways for players to express themselves through a game. There is conflict and balance between the good and evil forces and sheer volume of material with built-in and deeply dedicated fans.

Some of Magic's most involved players really dislike any Universes Beyond, yet, there are also quieter segments of Magic players that simply enjoy them or would never have picked up a card if not for a Marvel super hero.

Are Marvel Sets Standard Legal?

Yes, the main Marvel sets are legal in Standard upon release. Many new sets bring alongside a non-Standard set that includes some amount of reprints, the welcome decks and scene box cards. and the legality of those cards does not change.

Speculation

Kapow! | Illustration by Jessica Fong

Kapow! | Illustration by Jessica Fong

Marvel and Magic fans alike speculate on the types of cards that could be included in upcoming crossover sets. Could we still get new-to-Magic Marvel commanders to lead precons? Quite possibly. Are beyond boosters how we seal up Marvel's heroes and villains, or do we stick to play and collector boosters? We'll watch those WPN stores for more product details, but in the meantime, let's get back to mechanics and cards.

How many sets will it take to get to six Infinity Stones? Will WotC hang on to Marvel for six full sets? With the buzz online, I see an X-Men set, but after that it looks much thinner in terms of material. Perhaps those infinity stones show up as a pair next and a trio in the third. There are a lot more possibilities, so let's try to organize some of them.

Ally Creatures

Magic’s official announcement mentions allies. Hence, there could be ally creature types amongst some characters in the MTG and Marvel crossover. Say for example that one of the cards features all the Avengers or characters of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Since they’re all allies in the Marvel universe, they could be designated as an ally creature type. We do know that Avatar: The Last Airbender features allies, and WotC wants their Standard archetypes to have some support across its sets, so this feels like a layup.

Battle Cards

Magic battle cards could bring to life some of the best Marvel battles in history. Think Xavier's mutant academy versus Magneto's brotherhood, Battle of Wakanda, Black Panther versus Killmonger, and Loki versus Dr. Strange. The front of the battle card could have a scene from the beginning of the battle while the flip side features an image encompassing the end of the iconic fight.

Mutate

For the tension between humans and mutants, a return of mutate has to be among the WotC discussions. Because mutate cares about building decks with non-humans, one of the Marvel sets could have us care about at least one human fighting for survival on the battlefield at all times. There is ample opportunity with Guardian of the Galaxy, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, and the X-Men for mutate to stretch between colors more than they did in Ikoria.

Marvel-Inspired MTG Mechanics

We got Marvel legends with hyper-specific ability words like Iron Man's Genious Industrialist or Spider-Ham, Peter Porker‘s Animal May-Ham, but there's definitely room for more broadly applicable mechanics.

Characters such as Nightcrawler and Blink could have what’s called a teleport mechanic since they’re superheroes with a teleportation ability, and the ability word has already been printed on Blink Dog. Any of the psychics could have something to do with scry and instants or sorceries. Storm, Force of Nature's EDH decks focus on the MTG storm mechanic (shocker). I mean, the flavor aspect is priceless!

Maybe hulk cards will include a smash mechanic because of his catchphrase, “Hulk smash!” The smash mechanic can allow for some damage to go towards a player or a creature when a Hulk attacks. Ant-Man could be part blue and work with serious exchanges in power and toughness, the possibilities are nearly infinite.

A serialized Tesseract is not far off of The Aetherspark which is already serialized.

Let’s expand on the speculation of the six Infinity Stones. Each one can relate to one of each color within the 5 colors of Magic’s color pie and the last one can tap for colorless mana.

  • The Soul Stone is found in Spider-Man and provides black mana .
  • The Time Stone can tap for green mana .
  • The Space Stone can tap for blue mana .
  • The Reality Stone can tap for red mana .
  • The Mind Stone, even though it’s yellow, is the closest color that makes sense to tap for white .
  • The purple Power Stone can tap for colorless mana c.

Many hope for four Commander decks based on the teams in the Marvel Universe. Team Iron Man, Team Captain America, Thanos, and a Space character-themed commander deck featuring Thor and Kraglin is the basis for this poster’s speculation.

User infernoman64 has another idea for commander precons featuring key Marvel characters. Themes include Avengers, X-Men, and a precon featuring villain characters such as Ultron, Doctor Doom, and Red Skull.

Let’s talk color identity for some speculated legendary creature cards that may feature of our favorite Marvel characters. Color identity may be based on their names, the colors they wear, or their personality as a superhero or villain.

Comment on what color identities you think other Marvel characters would be if we missed one that you like! Think about your love of Marvel to generate personal speculations and channel your inner R&D.

Spider-Man uses transforming, modal double-face cards and virtually all the superheroes and villains can make a card's worth of origin story. Also along the story route, sagas with the comic frame treatment are a sweet way to depict key story arcs from the comics or movies.

If you could correct Robert Banner to Bruce Banner, that would be sweet

I think that it’s important to note that the colors of a character’s costume don’t define their color identity.
I’d say that Hulk would be green/red. The “Hulk smash” sort of embodies red.
Loki might be blue/black since he’s a trickster.
    Iron Man – blue/red or blue/red/white
    Hawkeye – black
    Deadpool – black/red
    Daredevil – red
    Star-Lord – blue/white
    Gamora – black/white
    Drax – red
    Rocket Raccoon – red/blue
    Groot – green
Obviously, Rocket and Groot would be partners
    Moon Knight – black/white/blue
    Captain Marvel – white
    Ms. Marvel – blue

Using the soul stones’ colors from Thanos Quest and Infinity Gauntlet and lining those up with MTG mana colors makes more sense. It would look like this:

Power Gem is Red and could tap for Red mana (Mountain Land)
Mind Gem is Blue and could tap for Blue mana (Island Land)
Reality Gem is Yellow and could tap for Yellow mana (Plains Land)
Soul Gem is Green and could tap for Green mana (Forest Land)
Space Gem is Purple and could tap for Black mana (Swamp Land)
Time Gem is Orange and could tap for Colorless mana (N/A)

Let’s hope they get the colors right, instead of having another D&D Ancient Dragon situation.
