DirectCD is Adaptec’s packet-writing software for Windows that lets you use a CD-RW or compatible CD-R disc much like a large removable drive. Integrated with Windows Explorer, it enables drag-and-drop copying, renaming, and deleting of files directly on the disc, writing changes incrementally in the background. DirectCD formats media using the Universal Disk Format (UDF) to improve readability across systems and to allow updates without rebuilding an entire disc image. It includes quick and full formatting, erase, and finalize options, as well as an optional UDF reader for computers that need it. Originally released in the late 1990s as part of the Easy CD Creator suite, DirectCD helped make everyday file backup and transfer on CD-R/RW media simpler. The technology was later continued under Roxio after Adaptec’s consumer software business was spun off.
