Inspiration
Many patients receive their blood test results online, but those reports are written for clinicians, not for patients. Terms like “MCV,” “RDW,” or “High WBC” can be confusing for these patients.
We were inspired by a simple question: Why are patients expected to interpret lab data on their own?
Healthcare literacy gaps contribute to unnecessary follow-up calls, patient anxiety, and misunderstandings about health status. We wanted to make lab results clearer and simpler.
⸻
What It Does
Simple CBC transforms technical CBC lab values into a clear, patient-friendly report.
A healthcare worker or patient inputs standard CBC results into our application. The system: • Generates an interactive dashboard • Flags high and low results • Explains what each statistic measures • Describes what abnormal results may indicate in plain language • Generates a simplified summary for the patient
Instead of seeing:
WBC: 16.8 (H)
Patients see:
Your white blood cell count is higher than normal.
The goal is clarity without replacing clinical judgment.
⸻
How We Built It
• Frontend: React / Javascript
• Backend: Express.js
⸻
Challenges We Ran Into
• Handling git merge conflicts
• Designing a friendly, not overwhelming interface
• Structuring data to mimics real CBC lab formats
⸻
Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of
• Built a working prototype within a 3 hour period
• Created a smooth user interface from scratch
• Designed a tool that solves a specific issue in healthcare
⸻
What We Learned
• There is a real gap between clinical data and patient understanding
• Simplicity in healthcare communication is powerful
• UX decisions have big impacts on how tools are percieved
