How does LED Phototherapy work?
Phototherapy, the therapeutic application of light, is based on the principle that cells absorb and respond to specific wavelengths of light, influencing cellular activity and biological function. The mechanism of action is often compared to photosynthesis, whereby light energy is absorbed and converted into cellular energy through a process known as photobiomodulation.
LED Phototherapy involves exposure to specific wavelengths (nanometres) within the visible (colour) and near-infrared (invisible) spectrum of light. Each wavelength is absorbed by specialised cellular target molecules known as chromophores, triggering distinct biological responses including increased cellular energy production (ATP), modulation of inflammation, enhanced repair and regeneration and improved microcirculation.
