Seth, Chapter 5

Seth (JP: モリス Morisu) is one of the 7 Colored Flowers in Chapter 5 of Deltarune. They are the representation of the purple flower that was part of Asgore and Toriel's wedding bouquet.

Seth's associated trait is perseverance. They are based on the Perseverance SOUL from Undertale, mirroring their book bullet pattern, as well as carrying a book and wearing glasses.

Seth is first encountered in the Dark Foliage, alongside Aqua. The two of them serve as the primary antagonists throughout most of the following Cliffs area.

Profile

Appearance

Seth is a purple-colored humanoid plant with glasses, deep magenta hair, and a lavender tie. While at times their glasses appear completely opaque, when they are translucent their eyes are typically drawn as long horizontal or vertical black stripes. Their hair tufts up into three predominant shapes, with two additional bangs coming across above their glasses. Their dress tapers off into uneven partings around the waist, partial to the left.

Personality

Seth is a bookish, aspiring intellectual and tactician. In comparison to other characters, Seth is seen to generally employ more strategy into their plans, such as when they instruct Aqua to use bullet patterns that the player performed worse on. While trying to seem tough and calculated, Seth cares deeply for their attachments, primarily with Aqua and Asgore, the latter they are seen continuously trying to connect to several times throughout the chapter. Seth also has an admiration for Berdly, who has a similar affinity for ‘smarts’. Seth can also be characterized as notably more individualistic compared to the other flowers, as they chose their own name and are also keen to subverting the typical battle mechanics, such as when they disregard your mercy progress. Seth takes interest as well in engineering, arts, and literature, which are all things that they have created inside their notebook. Seth likes control and order, and when they are told something needs to be done they make sure it is done correctly. They seem to be slightly clumsy based on the times they fell over in the chapter.

Gender

During their break with Aqua in the Cafe, Seth dodges the question of whether they are a boy or a girl, and during their battle, they refer to themself as a "king or queen". This, alongside the usage of exclusively they/them pronouns for Seth throughout the Chapter, heavily implies that they are uncertain of a gender for themself and/or are nonbinary.

Etymology

Their name may come from "Perseverance", the trait of the Purple Soul in Undertale.

Their Japanese name, 「モリス」 (Morisu, "Morris"), may derive from 紫色 murasaki-iro, Japanese for purple.

Both their English and Japanese names are also shared by a character in Illusion of Gaia, who has a similar appearance to them.

Main story

Seth first appears in the Quiet Glade, along with Aqua. Seth tells her to not let the party get to the Petal Feather, as it would allow them to progress to the next area, which would go against Flowery's plans.

Seth appears again with Aqua throughout most of the Cliffs. They are seen talking and bickering with each-other as the party progresses. When the party catch up to them Seth initially tries to hide, and blames Aqua for giving their position away with their talking. Seth says they might follow them into Flower Castle, to which Aqua invites them to follow them up there, much to the frustration of Seth, who initiates a Team Bullet Pattern. After the party defeats Seth's Bullet Pattern, they tell Aqua to retreat but trip and drop their book while trying to do so. Ralsei picks up Seth's book and gives it back, to which Seth thanks him before beginning to correct themselves and hurrying out.

In a following confrontation later on the Cliffs, Seth attempts to make use of wind to give Aqua an edge over the party. This backfires on them, as the wind ends up just bringing the party up to Aqua and Seth, where they begin a battle. Seth gets Aqua to use the attack that damaged the player the most in her first encounter over and over again as part of their strategy, however Aqua gets bored and decides to attack Seth as well. Aqua leaves and Seth continues the battle on their own, eventually retreating after dizzying themselves out.

After being imprisoned in Flower Castle, Aqua calls out to Seth and asks them to let Susie, Kris, and herself out of the cage. Seth says that those are their enemies and that they need to get out. After Seth says that Aqua could only be friends with themselves or the party, Seth opens the prison door anxiously before Aqua gives an answer. When they are alone, they ask Kris to make good to a deal they made before opening the Dark Fountain, with Seth receiving one of Berdly's feathers.

In the Second Diner on the left side of the Castle, Seth is seen trying to read to Asgore as he walks away, interpreting his coldness coming from a perceived disinterest in their story, as Asgore only wanted to read "a few pages". Seth appears throughout the castle in subsequent scenes, as they take a backseat to Green and Orange. They later resign themselves to the Punishment room, where Seth deigns to renovate it in order to be more effective, though gets distracted with flower pressing in the process, leading to their accusation in Yellow's encounter with the PerpBook as the evidence. Upon backtracking in the west wing, Seth can be seen enjoying the hot springs.

Seth is encountered for the final time in the last stretch at Top of Castle, where they, along side the rest of the flowers, impede the party's progress throughout the final climb, mostly by fighting alongside standard enemies to mitigate their weaknesses, and appear alongside the final fight with Flowery. In the last goodbyes, Seth says they are glad they got the opportunity to learn as much as they did, before reverting back to a purple flower.

Attacks

• In the Bullet Pattern encounter in the platforming game mode, has a large pair of glasses. When one of Aqua's knife bullets passes through the glasses' lenses, the knife bullet duplicates and splits in two directions.
• Books on two sides of the bullet board emit words that move parallel to the bullet board, similarly to the purple souls attack in the Omega Flowey battle (in Undertale) and one of Queen's attacks. The bullet board rotates during this attack.

Strategy

In their first fight they work with Aqua in an attempt to block the way. They will order Aqua to use whichever attack she was able to hit the player the most with during the previous fight with her. During the fight, if the player gets hit with an attack, Seth encourages Aqua to keep using it, and if they completely avoid an attack, Seth will react in disbelief and tell Aqua to use a different one. Upon stalling long enough Aqua grows bored of this strategy and breaks the plan resulting in Seth getting hit and having to retreat.

Another way to end the fight is to damage Seth or Aqua until they have 0 health, which would instantly end the fight.

• Seth bears many similarities to the character Patchouli Knowledge from the Touhou Project franchise.
  • Both have purple hair and dress in a purple gown.

• Seth's appearance bears a near-identical resemblance to a character of the same name from Illusion of Gaia. They both have long, purple hair, round glasses, a purple robe outfit, and both carry a book with them at all times. Both also have reserved personalities and high intelligence. They are also both named Morris in the Japanese version of their respective games.

• The encounter flavor text when Seth and Aqua battle together is based on the idiom the pen is mightier than the sword.

• At the end of some cutscenes, Seth drops their book and falls over before leaving the room, in a similar manner to Undertale's Monster Kid.
