From Deltarune Wiki

Deltarune is an episodic video game that is divided into several different Chapters. Each Chapter is centered around a specific Dark World (in Chapter 4's case, series of adjacent Dark Worlds), and its antagonist. Five Chapters have been released, with seven planned in total.[1]

Usage

Progress transfer

Each Chapter continues the story from the previous Chapter. The choices, collected inventory, equipment, and Dark Dollars carry over between Chapters via Completion FILEs. The player's actions in one Chapter can influence the next; for example, talking to certain characters in a Chapter causes them to have different dialogue in later Chapters, and Recruits transfer to later Chapters.

Transformation

Chapter Select screen

Chapter Select screenshot completion.png
The Chapter Select screen with completion stars and Shadow Crystals marked

The Chapter Select screen has indicators for completed game progress for each SAVE file slot and if Shadow Crystals were obtained.

Up to three completion stars can appear to the right of each "Chapter [#]". The alignment of the star — top, center, bottom — indicates SAVE slot #1, SAVE slot #2, and SAVE slot #3 respectively. Yellow stars are for completed SAVE files that contain a Completion FILE, while hollow stars are for erased SAVE files that contain a Completion FILE.

In the lower-right corner is a grid for collected Shadow Crystals; the three rows are for SAVE slot #, while the five columns are for the five available Chapters. A Shadow Crystal present in row 2, column 3, for example, means that a Shadow Crystal was earned in SAVE slot #2 for Chapter 3.

Trivia

  • The first five Chapters of Deltarune contain unique variations of certain optional, secretive content:
    • An unused script of code titled "UNUSED", featuring the dialogue of an unknown character.
    • A Shadow Crystal boss: intentionally difficult bosses who can be optionally defeated for a Shadow Crystal and exclusive piece of equipment.
    • A secret room which can only be accessed via specific requirements, featuring an appearance from the Forgotten Man and an obtainable Egg.
  • Before completing Chapter 3, the Chapter Select icon is a grin with teeth, corresponding with the smile seen on the Dreemurr residence's TV at the end of Chapter 2. After completing Chapter 3, the grin is altered into a toothless smile, resembling the opening of the Knight's helmet.
  • During the battle against the Hammer of Justice in Chapter 4, the Old Man describes the first five chapters of the Lord of the Hammer book, each one paralleling the events of a corresponding Chapter in Deltarune.
  • Unused assets within the game files reference additional Chapters numbered 0, 8, 9, and 10. These include placeholder entries and icon graphics bearing the respective Chapter numbers, which use designs similar to those of the currently unreleased Chapter icons. These assets do not appear in normal gameplay and are generally presumed to be development placeholders or remnants of early testing rather than indications of planned Chapters.
  • The usage of Chapters in Deltarune was inspired by Live A Live.[3]
