Developing Flexible Psychopedagogical Abilities in Prison Staff Dealing with Dyslexic Inmates

A key priority of this project is to enhance the professional skills of correctional staff working in prison education by developing and expanding their psycho-pedagogical abilities to support dyslexic inmates. By equipping staff with innovative teaching methods, the project fosters inclusive and engaging learning environments, increasing their motivation to contribute effectively to the educational process. This, in turn, promotes civic engagement within the prison system and beyond, aligning with national strategies for the social reintegration of inmates.

The project brings together experts and practitioners in correctional education, leveraging years of experience to develop effective tools for teaching adults with learning disabilities. By training prison staff in inclusive education methodologies, the project aims to improve literacy and social skills for inmates at risk of exclusion. This approach not only enhances learning outcomes but also has a long-term impact on social and professional reintegration after release, ultimately reducing recidivism and fostering safer communities.

Topics addressed by FLEXability project:

  • Initial and continuous training for teachers, trainers and other education staff
  • New learning and teaching methods and approaches
  • Inclusion, promoting equality and non-discrimination

Specific objectives of the FLEXability are:

  • Strengthening correctional educators’ ability to identify key characteristics of prison-based education and equipping them with specialized tools to support inmates with learning difficulties.
  • Enhancing staff psycho-pedagogical skills to screen and assess inmates with dyslexia and develop tailored interventions that ensure a flexible and adaptable approach to teaching.
  • Providing open-access to the final FLEXability methodology and ensuring its sustainable exploitation in different European education contexts.

Our work consists of:

  • Designing and implementing a screening instrument for identifying learning disabilities in adult prisoners
  • Delivering a training course for contouring flexible psycho-pedagogical competences in prison staff
  • Developing a digital curriculum containing creative materials for inmates with learning disabilities

All participating organizations in the consortium have extensive experience working with prison populations, either through European-funded projects or local and voluntary initiatives.
