Lunar Eclipse

Image date: 2022-11-08

Things were looking great.

The weather outlook was for clear skies. The plan was to image the eclipse (with Uranus in the picture) with my DSLR camera on tripod, take a few images through the telescope too, then take advantage of the dark sky during the eclipse to spend some time capturing the Andromeda Galaxy with the telescope.

But . . .

The sky was mostly overcast and consequently I could not align the telescope. Then I blundered by inexplicably saving raw FITS files from my telescope in black and white and showing the matrix of doom. Thank goodness for the DSLR.

In astronomy, things don’t always go to plan. As for Andromeda, she has to wait . . .

  1. I’m not saying anything . . .

    Anyway, glad you got something.

I don’t go out that often, but I might now that the weather is turning cooler and fewer bugs see me as dinner.

Which means that I need to brush up on, and relearn, the settings and suggested practices for DSLR night sky photography.

      1. Hmm . . . not sure how to answer . . . I’m in a small town, and it’s not as bad as some places I’ve lived, but not as great as I had in Colorado.

The bigger issue is not having a clear view of the sky from my place. The best view is to the West, but that’s also where there’s more light from the town.

South is best as far as dark sky, but a house and trees obscure the lower parts of the sky.

I’ll see how it goes. It wasn’t too bad last year when I played with the conjunction (not too bad for me; not as good as you).

  2. I was up early for polling place work. It was Election Day. I did get a couple of nice photos to share today. Yes, things don’t always go as planned. I have stories.
