ABOUT RUSTIC
/ Pioneering Sri Lanka's Culinary Tourism Since 2014
Rustic Cooking Class was founded in 2014 with a simple but powerful idea: Sri Lankan food should be experienced, not observed. Long before “culinary tourism” became a recognized travel trend in Sri Lanka, we introduced the country’s first truly hands-on cooking experience, combining guided local market tours with immersive, participatory cooking sessions in a real home kitchen.
What began as the Market Tour & Hands-On Cooking Class Colombo has since evolved into a comprehensive culinary tourism platform. Over the years, we have welcomed more than 5,000 guests from over 100+ countries, all seeking something deeper than sightseeing—an authentic connection to Sri Lanka through its food, people, and stories.
/ Our Story: Why Rustic Was Created
Before founding Rustic, our team spent years working with leading destination management companies across Sri Lanka, organizing tours and guiding international travelers. While Sri Lanka offered rich culture, landscapes, and heritage, one thing was noticeably missing: authentic, interactive culinary experiences.
At the time, “cooking experiences” were limited to short homestay visits lasting 30–45 minutes. These were mostly demonstrations, not classes. Guests would watch a pre-prepared dish—often string hoppers—being finished, with little to no participation. Similar formats existed in places like Sigiriya, Kandy, and along the southern coast, but none allowed guests to cook multiple dishes themselves from start to finish.
We believed travelers deserved more. More time. More participation. More meaning.
So we reimagined the experience—from selecting ingredients at local markets, to understanding spices, techniques, and traditions, and finally cooking complete meals with your own hands. Rustic was born out of this belief: food is the most powerful way to understand a culture.
/ Building in the Early Days
Starting a cooking class in 2014 came with its own challenges. Digital platforms for experiences were still developing. Platforms like TripAdvisor only began accepting reviews for tours and experiences—including cooking classes—around 2015–2016, following integration with Viator. Before that, guest feedback lived in handwritten notebooks and simple guestbooks.
Despite the limitations, word spread—slowly at first, then steadily. Guests talked. Guides recommended us. Travelers returned with friends and family. What started as a single experience grew organically into something much bigger.
/ Our Growth & Evolution
As our guests’ curiosity deepened, so did our offerings. Rustic evolved beyond one class into a curated collection of culinary journeys:
- Rustic Colombo Cooking & Market Tour (2014) – Our original and signature experience: local markets, spice education, and hands-on clay pot cooking in a home kitchen.
- Rustic Taste: Cultural Tales Food Tours (2016) – A storytelling-driven food tour exploring Sri Lankan cuisine through history, neighborhoods, and cultural context.
- Culinary Trail: Farm-to-Table Experiences (2020) – Immersive journeys connecting farms, villages, producers, and kitchens—tracing food from soil to plate.
Each experience is built on the same philosophy: authenticity, participation, and respect for tradition.
/ Recognition & Trust
Over the years, Rustic Cooking Class has earned consistent recognition across trusted global platforms such as TripAdvisor, Airbnb Experiences, Cookly, and Bonappe Tours. From our earliest handwritten guestbooks to thousands of five-star reviews online, one thing has remained unchanged: our commitment to honest, meaningful experiences rooted in real Sri Lankan life.
/ What Rustic Means Today
Today, Rustic Cooking Class is more than a cooking school. It is a bridge—between travelers and home kitchens, markets and meals, tradition and curiosity.
We don’t just teach recipes—and we don’t offer “10-curry-style” cooking demonstrations. Staged curry presentation is not our focus. If you’re looking for staged curry displays, a hotel buffet is an easier place to find them. We focus on cultural cooking and interactive experiences, and we strive to share our long-standing culinary culture—one of the longest-living food traditions in the world.
At Rustic, we share knowledge and techniques passed down through generations. We talk about ingredients, seasons, culture, and the stories behind each dish. We invite our guests to slow down, cook together in a local home setting, eat together, and understand Sri Lanka beyond the guidebooks.
We work closely with local farmers and village communities, visit farmlands, gather firsthand knowledge, and actively participate in conservation and responsible kitchen practices. Our work is rooted in continuous research into Sri Lanka’s local culinary history and food culture. Check out our blog posts related to these subjects.
More than a decade later, our mission remains the same as it was in 2014: to preserve, practice, and share Sri Lanka’s culinary heritage—one hands-on experience at a time.
