Building the values, confidence and life skills young people need to thrive
Character is what shapes how young people respond to challenge, treat others and believe in themselves. At Commando Joe’s, character development is not taught in isolation; it is experienced through action, reflection and purposeful challenge.
Our Character pillar supports schools to intentionally develop behaviours, attitudes and personal strengths that underpin learning, wellbeing and positive relationships across the school community.
CHARACTER THROUGH ACTION
Character is built when children are given opportunities to:
-
Step outside their comfort zone
-
Work collaboratively toward shared goals
-
Reflect on their choices and behaviour
-
Learn from both success and failure
Through structured experiences, pupils develop confidence, self-awareness and a strong sense of responsibility — skills that stay with them long after the mission ends.
THE RESPECT FRAMEWORK
The Character pillar is underpinned by our RESPECT Framework, providing a clear structure for developing the personal qualities that matter most in school and in life.
The framework focuses on:
-
Resilience
-
Empathy
-
Self-awareness
-
Passion
-
Excellence
-
Communication
-
Teamwork
This shared language helps pupils understand how to behave, why it matters, and how to apply these values consistently in different situations.
CHARACTER PROGRAMMES
Character Programmes
Our Character pillar is delivered through a suite of structured, evidence-based programmes that support pupils from early years through to secondary. Each programme is designed to develop character traits in action — building confidence, resilience, teamwork and purpose.
Lead the Way
A leadership and transition programme that empowers pupils to step up, take responsibility and make a positive difference in school culture. Through structured leadership opportunities and challenge, young people build confidence, resilience and the skills they need to support others.
Inspire to Achieve
Our team of inspirational role models help pupils develop essential life skills, strengthen motivation and grow belief in their potential. This programme supports character development through reflection, teamwork and ambitious personal challenge.
Let’s Play
A pupil-led play enrichment programme that brings structure, purpose and positive behaviour to break and lunchtime. Through play-based challenges rooted in our RESPECT framework, pupils develop cooperation, communication and confidence in everyday school life.
Unstoppable You (Coming Soon)
A next-generation programme focused on emotional resilience, self-belief and personal growth. Designed to complement our existing programmes, Unstoppable You will support pupils to understand their strengths, manage setbacks and build inner confidence.
Early Years Exploration
Foundational character development starts in the early years. This strand uses playful, sensory-rich experiences to grow confidence, curiosity, co-operation and early social skills — preparing young learners to thrive in school and beyond.
CHARACTER THAT BUILDS A FOUNDATION
Character development is most effective when it is:
-
Consistent
-
Intentional
-
Embedded into the school day
Our Character pillar helps schools move beyond one-off interventions, creating meaningful experiences that shape behaviour, wellbeing and personal growth over time.
Building Character Every Day
Through our Character pillar, pupils do not just learn skills, they grow as confident, resilient and empathetic individuals ready to face challenges, make positive choices and contribute meaningfully to their communities. With structured programmes, a research backed RESPECT Framework and hands on experiences from EYFS to secondary, Commando Joe’s helps schools embed character development into every day, creating lasting impact for both pupils and staff.
