Meet Giuli, a breast cancer patient who discovered scalp cooling after carrying out her own research on the internet, using websites such as Reddit and breastcancer.org. Despite having some initial concerns about whether scalp cooling would work for her, Giuli says that the process was exactly as she had expected.

Often, when patients are going through chemotherapy treatment, many can feel the need to wear a head covering to maintain their identity. However, due to her hair retention, Giuli didn’t feel the need to do this.

When asked whether she has any scalp cooling haircare tips for other cap users, Giuli suggests, “keeping long hair, watching videos, minimizing haircare”, as her top tips. Giuli also says that using a wide tooth comb and keeping her hair in braids helped to keep it in good condition during treatment.

When we asked Giuli how she feels about her scalp cooling experience, she explains that she is “a very facts and data driven person”. After reading studies around some chemotherapy drugs causing permanent alopecia, Giuli reflects “I was fine with losing my hair, but I wanted it to come back.” However, she was pleasantly surprised to retain 40-50%. Giuli had hair thinning all over her head as a result of scalp cooling, but it was not obvious to most people.
