Meet Diane, a breast cancer patient who discovered scalp cooling after talking with a close friend. Like many patients who are contemplating scalp cooling, Diane had some questions about its efficacy, and whether she would be able to tolerate the cold cap for the duration of her treatment sessions. However, she says the cold was “much more tolerable” than she had expected.

As far as hair loss is concerned, Diane explains that she knows “everyone is different and there are no guarantees”. Unfortunately, Diane did not manage to retain all of her hair with cold capping – retaining about 30% of it overall. However, Diane says that thanks to persevering with a cap, the regrowth process began before she had finished her course of treatment. In addition, Diane did not feel the need to wear a wig or head covering at any time while cold capping, something for which she is “very grateful”.

Asked whether she has any scalp cooling haircare tips for other cap users, Diane says that she would simply “follow the Paxman guidelines for best results”. She also suggests using “a wide tooth comb only.”

When we asked Diane how she feels about her scalp cooling experience, she explains that she had to wear a wig while undergoing treatment six years ago. The possibility of not having to wear a wig this time “was motivation enough” for Diane to use cold capping. In addition, she says that cold capping allowed her “the freedom to go out socially” and “not be identified by her appearance as a cancer patient”. When asked if she would recommend scalp cooling to others, she confidently says that she would "highly recommend the process”.
