Case Studies

Copprint develops patented nano-copper inks that enable the simple, additive manufacturing of printed circuit boards, antennas, and photovoltaic cells. The company replaces outdated, resource-intensive processes with sustainable alternatives: compostable RFID antennas instead of etched aluminum on PET, clean printing instead of chemical etching, and abundant copper in place of costly, scarce silver. Copprint grounds every application in one principle: deliver high performance while dramatically reducing environmental impact.

In January 2020, right before the COVID pandemic, Copprint’s team attended their first Cleantech Forum North America. They aimed to connect with investors who understand the lengthy timelines required for deep-tech companies. The event quickly revealed that traditional VCs with a standard seven-year fund cycle often don’t align with technologies needing more extended ramp-up periods.

Copprint also used the Forum to engage with fellow founders across a remarkably diverse spectrum, from nuclear fusion to fish farming to carbon capture. Those interactions sharpened Copprint’s sustainability narrative, helped the team adopt proper industry terminology, and deepened their understanding of essential tools like Life Cycle Analysis in shaping both policy and investment decisions.

Since that first experience, Copprint has attended numerous Cleantech Group events and earned a spot on the Global Cleantech 100, an objective, expert-based, respected recognition that strengthened the start-up’s positioning and credibility in fundraising.

Dr. Ofer Schochet, Copprint’s CEO and Co-Founder, advises:

“If you are building a cleantech start-up or scale-up, I strongly recommend joining this community. It offers a platform to expand your investor and partner network and serves as a collaborative force that accelerates the adoption of sustainable technologies globally.”

MacroCycle develops circular plastics and textiles at price parity with as low as zero carbon emissions. Based in Cambridge, MA, the company is commercializing its novel SolvoGenesis™ technology, which purifies and chemically upcycles material without breaking it down to its constituents. This process creates a highly efficient pathway for chemical recycling and overcomes longstanding industry challenges. MacroCycle first connected with Cleantech Group when Breakthrough Energy Fellows invited them to attend the 2024 Cleantech Forum North America, where they explored and learned about the cleantech ecosystem.

After the 2024 Cleantech Forum North America, MacroCycle’s CEO learned about the Cleantech 50 to Watch, an annual recognition awarded to 50 early-stage companies that deliver high-impact cleantech innovation.

MacroCycle set it as a team goal, and 10 months later, the team attended Cleantech Forum Europe to accept the award in person. The recognition boosted MacroCycle’s credibility and helped them successfully close a $6.5M Seed round three months later. The company continues to participate actively in the ecosystem, tapping into a broader network of value-add investors that engage with Cleantech Group–vetted companies, an advantage as MacroCycle prepares for a Series A in the current market.

They also use insights from Cleantech Group’s Market Intelligence to deepen their understanding of circularity market trends and conditions.
