What are the tax advantages of stock donations?
Donating appreciated stock to a qualified charity can be a highly tax-efficient way to give, offering benefits that go beyond simply donating cash.
Here are some of the key tax advantages:
1. Avoid capital gains tax
If you sell appreciated stock and then donate the proceeds, you’ll owe capital gains tax on the profit.
By donating the stock directly, you avoid paying that capital gains tax, potentially freeing up a significant amount of money that would otherwise go to taxes.
2. Claim a charitable tax deduction
You can deduct the full fair market value (FMV) of the stock on the date of donation if you itemize deductions on your tax return—so you get a deduction for the current market value, not just your original cost basis.
The deduction limits for appreciated stock are generally 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for the tax year and excess contributions can be carried forward for up to five additional tax years.
3. Potential for increased charitable impact
By avoiding capital gains taxes and potentially claiming a larger deduction, your donation can go further and have a greater impact on CPI’s mission.

Gifts from Your Non-Roth or Inherited IRA

If you are 70 ½: As the IRS itself states: “Qualified charitable distributions are great options for making tax-free gifts to charity.”  Each year you can exclude up to $105,000 from your gross income as long as the distribution is made directly from your IRA to Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute (or any qualified charity). This is key. If the funds go to you first, they are not eligible.

If you are 73 (or older) or are required to take distributions from an inherited IRA: The same rule—excluding up to $100,000 from your gross income—applies to your required minimum distribution (RMD). The distribution must be made directly from your IRA to Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.

How do you make this gift?  Contact your broker, IRA custodian, or financial adviser and tell them you’d like to make a “Qualified Charitable Distribution” from your IRA to Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute Fed. Tax. ID 36-1263210.

Why does this gift have so many benefits?

Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making during your lifetime.

You pay no income taxes on the gift. The distribution generates neither taxable income nor a deduction.

Your gift won’t count as income (unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA). Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact to certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare. So it may reduce your tax bracket, the amount of Social Security subject to tax, or your Medicare premiums. This depends on your financial circumstances.

You don’t have to itemize to gain the tax benefits so you may decide to take advantage of the higher standard deduction available under recent tax law changes.

Empowering Learning & Empowering Healing

It is the mission of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute to transform the lives of individuals, families and communities using psychoanalytic knowledge to help them grow and thrive.

Since its founding in 1932, the Institute has contributed to the field of psychoanalysis through education, scholarship and treatment.  Psychoanalysis provides an explanation of human behavior, human desires and how we become who we are. What we learn about ourselves can positively shape and influence all that occurs around us. When one person achieves transformative change, it changes those around them too. All of this contributes to the Institute’s mission of transforming the lives of individuals, families and communities using psychoanalytic knowledge to help them grow and thrive.

To become a member of the Institute community that makes transformative change possible, you can make a donation, become a board member, apply for education programming or tell us your story. We appreciate donations of any size and welcome all inquiries.

About the Institute

The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute applies history, theory, knowledge, practice and research to offer the highest standard of psychoanalytic training for psychoanalysts and all mental health professionals through accessible educational programs, professional supervision, and continuing education programs. The Institute’s Treatment Center provides clinical services to adults, adolescents and children, with fees adjusted to income, making psychoanalytically-informed therapy more widely available.

Human beings and being human are at the core of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute’s mission. The Institute is dedicated to advancing knowledge of human beings—their feelings, thoughts and behavior—and to improving people’s lives.

Designate CPI as a beneficiary of a retirement plan

Impact psychoanalytic training and treatment without touching your will—and avoid the double taxation.

Many advisors consider traditional IRAs and qualified retirement plans the assets of choice to leave to charity because − if left to heirs − they are taxed more heavily than other assets:  capital gains tax on appreciation and income tax on the distribution. Leave a gift to Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, and more to your family!

Simply complete a beneficiary designation form for your IRA or qualified retirement plan (e.g., a 401(k) or 403(b) plan) to easily designate us as a beneficiary of an entire plan or a percentage of plan assets.

It is just as easy to designate CPI (and any other qualified charity that moves you) as a beneficiary of a DAF, Trust, or paid life insurance policy.

Below, are the most common kinds of bequests with sample language for naming The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute as a beneficiary. You may also change your beneficiaries at any time, should your circumstances change.

This is a very popular choice for charitable bequests because it ensures that loved ones receive their distribution before any distribution to charity.

“I devise the residue of my estate, after the satisfaction of all specific bequests and the payment of all taxes and other costs attending my death, to the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute., a not-for profit corporation, Tax ID# 36-1263210, with principal offices currently located at 8 S Michigan Ave Suite 700 Chicago IL, 60603.”

A stated sum of money, usually cash, to a beneficiary.

“I bequeath the sum of $____ dollars to the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute., a not-for profit corporation, Tax ID# 36-1263210, with principal offices currently located at 8 S Michigan Ave Suite 700 Chicago IL, 60603.”

Enables your bequests to grow as your assets grow.

“I bequeath to the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute., a not-for profit corporation,

Tax ID# 36-1263210, with principal offices currently located at 8 S Michigan Ave Suite 700 Chicago IL, 60603.” an amount equal to ______ percent of the net value of my estate as finally determined for federal estate tax purposes.”

Assumes you want to leave your entire estate to family and friends. However, in the event that you outlive any of your beneficiaries, it provides an opportunity to designate the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute to receive that portion of the estate.

“In the event that (name of the beneficiary) does not survive me, I designate to the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute., a not-for profit corporation, Tax ID# 36-1263210, with principal offices currently located at 122 S Michigan Ave. Suite 1300, Chicago, IL 60603.” as the devisee of this bequest of (see above for language specific to different types of bequests.)”
