Arnold “Arnie” Tobin
The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute mourns the passing of Arnold “Arnie” Tobin at the age of 97. Arnie was a distinguished member of our faculty, a training and supervising analyst, and a deeply respected teacher who devoted many years to the life and mission of the Institute.
He belonged to a generation of psychoanalysts whose dedication helped form the foundation of CPI. Through his teaching, mentorship, and clinical work, Arnie made lasting contributions to the psychoanalytic community. He was especially known for his thoughtful engagement with Freud’s work and for demonstrating the contemporary clinical relevance of classical psychoanalytic theory.
Arnie’s intellectual passion, generosity of spirit, and unwavering belief in the value of psychoanalytic treatment influenced generations of students and colleagues. We are profoundly grateful for his presence in our community.
We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Eva Lichtenberg, former Chair of the CPI Board of Trustees, and to his family and loved ones. His legacy will continue to shape the Institute and the field of psychoanalysis for years to come.

We will deeply miss his quiet humor, steady presence, and exemplary dedication to clinical excellence and teaching. Our hearts are with his family during this time of loss.

History and Foundation
The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute is a premier center for psychoanalytic research, education, and clinical training, located on historic Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. We offer comprehensive professional education in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, while also providing therapy services to individuals seeking support for a wide range of mental health concerns—including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship challenges.
Rooted in contemporary psychoanalytic practice, the Institute blends rigorous academic training with hands-on clinical experience. This integrated approach ensures that both clients and clinicians benefit from the highest standards of care and expertise.
The Institute was founded in 1932 by Dr. Franz Alexander, a trailblazer in psychosomatic medicine and a leading figure at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. Invited to Chicago by the president of the University of Chicago, Dr. Alexander established what would become one of the foremost institutions of psychoanalytic thought and practice in the United States.
